I just bought a huge container of white vinegar at Costco and came home to realize I already had a huge jug that was hiding from me in the corner of the cabinet. Whoopsie– so since vinegar is so crazy cheap I decided not to return it and instead find new ways to use vinegar around the house.
Here are some ideas that you might want to consider- vinegar really is so versatile and the best part is that if something doesn’t work well- well you are out just a few cents for trying.
- Remove soap buildup and odors from your dishwasher by pouring a cup of white distilled vinegar inside the empty dishwasher and running it through an entire cycle. (see more tips to clean your dishwasher here)
- Soften your feet and remove dead skin by soaking them for 2o minutes a day in one part vinegar to two parts warm water. (I actually prefer epsom salts myself but this is worth a shot!)
- Remove gum from clothes by warming a bowl of vinegar in the microwave. Pour the warm vinegar over the gum and make sure it is saturated. The gum should dissolve.
- Clean the microwave by mixing 1/2 cup baking soda and 1/2 cup hot white vinegar in a microwave-safe bowl. Bring to boil inside the microwave and hardened stains and such should be softened to wipe clean and remove plus odors removed.
- Clean your grill by spritzing white vinegar over wadded aluminum foil and scrubbing the grill with it.
- To kill germs, spray full strength vinegar on doorknobs and wipe dry.
- Remove wallpaper easily by using a paint roller to thoroughly wet the surface with equal parts vinegar and hot water. Or you can use a spray bottle to saturate.
- Remove paint splatters from windows by applying full strength vinegar with a paint brush.
- Saturate weeds with undiluted vinegar to kill them.
- To clean the toilet bowl, use a cup of vinegar and lit it sit several hours. Clean with the toilet brush afterwards.
- You can remove mildew and scum from shower curtain, tile or tubs by wiping with undiluted white vinegar.
- Remove soap buildup from faucets by scrubbing them with 1 part salt to 4 parts vinegar.
- Remove grease from the oven with with a cloth or sponge soaked in vinegar.
- Spray with vinegar to eliminate odors from containers. Rinse and dry.
- Use a cotton ball soaked in vinegar to dab a mosquito bite to stop the itching.
- Make a homemade produce spray with vinegar and lemon- recipe here.
- Remove carpet stains with 2 tablespoons vinegar and 1/4 cup salt or baking soda. Rub the mixture into the stain and let dry. Let sit overnight and vacuum residue the next morning. (I would recommend spot testing this first)
- Use a soft cloth with vinegar to wipe DVD’s down that are scratched. This should help with skipping. Make sure it is dry before using.
- Use vinegar instead of fabric softener in laundry to remove any odors and freshen up clothing. Works especially well for towels!
- Remove crayons on the wall by dipping a toothbrush in vinegar and gently scrubbing.
