Are you looking for a little treat for the holidays that is fairly easy to make and not overly sweet? I was trying to come up with ideas that celebrate fall but that don’t require a ton of effort to put together.
One of my favorite things about fall is heading up to the local apple orchards in our area and indulging in the amazing Apple Doughnuts. Those are my absolute favorite treat every year and I thought it would be nice to post an easy recipe to make your own apple doughnuts at home!
These are really simple to make but you do need a doughnut pan to get the perfect little circles. I use this Wilton pan which is $9.99 from Amazon right now.
And you just need a few ingredients:
- 2 cups flour
- ½ cup sugar
- 1½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon nutmeg
- ¾ cup milk
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 tablespoons butter (melted)
- 2 Green Apples
- For the topping:
- 4 tablespoons butter (melted)
- ½ cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons cinnamon
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
- Peel and grate your apples.
- You want to remove as much juice/moisture as you can from the grated apple so place it on paper towels and squeeze.
- Next combine all the dry ingredients in a medium bowl and set aside.
- Add the apple to the wet ingredients and stir just until incorporated.
- Next add the dry ingredients to the wet and stir until incorporated.
- Fill each ring ½ to ⅔ full- making sure the batter isn't poring over the rings.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes until the tops are firm and offer a ittle bounce back when you press down.
- Leave donuts in the pan to cool for about 5 minutes.
- Next to make the topping, mix the sugar and cinnamon together in a bowl.
- Take the cooled donuts and dip into the melted butter and then sprinkle generously with the cinnamon sugar mixture.
- You can also put the cinnamon sugar in a bag and pop the butter covered donut in that and then shake the bag well to coat.
- Set on a cooling rack until cool and then enjoy!
And now you have gorgeous apple cinnamon doughnuts. I think these would be a great hostess gift- your hostess won’t need to worry about making breakfast the next morning or a little treat for class parties or teachers.

And by the way, if you are a doughnut fan, you might check out the Top Pot Doughnut cookbook. Top Pot is the most amazing Seattle doughnut shop and the cookbook is full of their amazing recipes. How fun to pop these in a little bag and include with the cookbook for a baker in your life.

Charlene…those donuts have Apple Hill written all over them! I would love to try them…might have to ask for the donut pan for Christmas!
Urg I know Barbie. I usually get the fritter which is about 8 million calories 😉
Anyone ever try these in a different kind of pan? Cupcake pan??
Joyce, you might be able to make doughnut holes in a mini cupcake pan.
We just went to Apple Hill for the first time this past weekend. LOVED IT…and yum!! I can’t wait to try these doughnuts out!! If I could only read the recipe after drooling over it…heehee
Mine turned out hard and chewy ..not sure what I did wrong. I had to bake longer too. Used mini doughnut pan though.
Urg! Sorry about that Annie. Hard and chewy is for sure not the result you want.
They sell these pans at Hobby Lobby for 9.99 and there is a 40% off coupon that makes them $6.50 including taxes.
