I posted this recipe a long time ago in a cold version for lunch boxes and wanted to revisit it in a warm version that is so perfect for fall and winter.
This recipe is crazy fast and crazy simple and a healthy alternative to hot chocolate. We absolutely love vanilla milk in this house- I like to give it to the girls as an afternoon treat or during movie night. It is slightly sweet but doesn’t have the sugar that you find in hot chocolate.
Plus it takes seconds to prepare- I hope you give it a shot!
Typically vanilla milk involves sugar and vanilla and cinnamon. I actually like to use Agave only in my milk.
You can find agave in stores like Target or Whole Foods for about $5. The bottle will last you for ages though so well worth the investment.
I have this Madhava Vanilla flavor agave in the cupboard right now but I also like Whole Sweeteners brand and that comes in Cinnamon, Strawberry, Maple and so on…
So to make your vanilla milk just pour your milk into a saucepan and heat over low on the stove.
You can pop in the micro too if you are short on time.
I use about 1 teaspoon of agave per cup (about 12oz) of milk. It doesn’t take much to sweeten your milk so error on the side of too little and you can always add more.
Once the milk is nicely heated pour into a mug and sprinkle with nutmeg or cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice.
I have a little Aerolatte milk frother that I love for homemade drinks like this. It makes the milk nice and frothy.
And that is it! You are done.
Sometimes the simplest things are so comforting so try this out and let me know what you think.

Thanks Charlene for the recipe. We do warm vanilla milk in our house because my youngest is allergic to chocolate. I have not tried the Madhava Vanilla flavor agave but I need to now. We use the vanilla flavored syrup but I like the less sugar in the agave. Thanks!

Sara you totally won’t miss the sugar when you try this agave. It sweetens it perfectly. My little girl got strawberry milk as a soccer treat a few weeks ago and has been begging for it. I want to pick up the strawberry agave and see if that works for her.

Could you use regular agave and add vanilla extract? Have you ever tried? Thanks sounds delicious.

Hi Vanessa- I sure haven’t. The regular agave would probably be just fine and I add vanilla to my hot chocolate so I don’t see why not 🙂
