This is the simplest recipe ever and so yummy! It is perfect for summer when you want something tangy and refreshing.
My children LOVE this recipe and it can be made into ice cream or a milkshake. Both are fantastic but the milkshake version is our family favorite.
So the idea for this recipe came from this amazing milkshake stand in our area that my husband found. They have a zillion flavors of shakes and we usually order 2 and share between us.
We have ordered several flavors in our day and the one we always come back to is the Lemonhead shake.
I thought it was so original and yummy that I wanted to try and recreate it at home. To make this really couldn’t be easier.
You just need to head out and get some vanilla ice cream. I bought vanilla bean but french vanilla would probably be better or you might try strawberry too.
You need lemon candies- I like both of these. The lemon rounds actually blend a little easier and you get a prettier bright yellow color but the Lemonheads are a little zingier. So either way gets great results.
Next just pop your lemon candy in a food processor. It only takes about 30 seconds to get it chopped really well. You don’t want it too fine (like sugar)- the larger pieces are better. Just add a small handful (maybe 1/4 cup) of candies to your processor. This will get you a lot of lemonhead cruchies- a little goes a long way.
And sprinkle on top! I just used a spoon to sprinkle it on top but the Dollar Store has powdered sugar or salt shakers that would be perfect. I think this would be so fun for playdates or pool parties- let the kiddos sprinkle it themselves.
And now dig in! You want to sprinkle just before eating so you get that wonderful crunchy texture. It will sort of melt a bit with the ice cream- still yummy just not as good as the crunchy candy.
If you want to make the famous Lemonhead milkshake that we love, just add some milk to ice cream and the crunched up candies to your blender or food processor. Blend for about 30 seconds- adjusting the ice cream and milk until you get the consistency you like.
Now sit back and pat your back and enjoy a seriously yummy dessert that your kiddos will love!
And if you still have some vanilla ice cream leftover, you might try this DIY Magic Shell recipe. This is the most delicious chocolate sauce ever and it gets nice and crunchy when you pour it on ice cream.
