Homemade Magic Shell Recipe

I posted this easy recipe last year but it was kind of hidden in another post so I wanted to mention it again.

This is just the easiest thing ever to whip up and it is so very delicious on ice cream.

You know that magic hard shell chocolate stuff that goes on ice cream?  Many of us had it as kids and probably haven’t purchased it in years.

Homemade Magic Shell

You can buy it at the store or just make your own with two simple ingredients.

I had a reader leave a comment on my homemade almond butter post just the other day- why bother making this when I can just buy it at the store?

Well I gotta tell you that the homemade version is so simple and just so very, very good.  You can control the ingredients you put into your food and avoid many of the extra preservatives and all that junk no one can pronouce.   I personally don’t like the kind you can buy at the store but this stuff I could easily eat every day.

So give it a shot- this recipe literally comes together in two minutes.

Super fast and delicious magic shell ice cream topping.

  • Chocolate Chips or chopped chocolate bar- 1⅓ cup
Instructions
  1. Mix coconut oil and chocolate chips together in a microwave safe bowl.
  2. Pop in microwave for about 30 seconds.
  3. Remove and stir well- the chocolate should be starting to melt.
  4. Put back in microwave for another 15 seconds.
  5. Remove and stir- hopefully it is all melted together and ready to pour.
  6. If not just continue to put in microwave for 10 second intervals.

Now this will be a chocolate sauce but once you pour it on top of ice cream it will harden right up!  You can keep this in a mason jar or Tupperware in the fridge for a few weeks and it should stay fairly liquid for easy pouring next time around.

I like to use Ghirardelli Milk Chocolate Chips but you can use dark chocolate, white chocolate… whatever floats your boat.

I absolutely love coconut and chocolate and I can for sure taste the coconut in this recipe.  My husband is not a fan of coconut at all and he loves this recipe.  My kiddos love it too.

We sprinkle on a few salted peanuts just to add a little salt to the sweet and it is an amazing dessert.  For my kiddos, just a few sprinkles and they are in heaven.

Hi Charlene, I love all the recipes you post! In fact my favorite part is that I can control the ingredients because you’re right, I don’t want unnecessary junk in what I eat or my kids eat… Your recipes are simple yet tasty! Thanks for posting them!

Totally Wendy. I once heard someone talking about nutrition and they said it isn’t about eating just vegetables and steamed salmon and that is it. You can eat the other stuff too in moderation and just make it yourself. Have the chocolate chip cookies that you crave – just take the time to make them so you know what is going into what you eat ;). Probably that nutritionist didn’t think I would be making magic shell for ice cream at the time but I like knowing exactly what I am eating. I don’t feel as guilty giving occasional treats to the kids when I have made it all myself.

So I bought my first jar of coconut oil ( over 2 months ago) to make a lotion for my daughter’s excema and all sorts of other things. This will definately BE the FIRST thing I actually make. Just so easy and oh the memories. Thanks so much Charlene.

There are actually 2 kinds of coconut oil and one of them does not ave any coconut flavor… 🙂
Getting ready to try this recipe right now! Thanks!

Darn it, I would make this right now, but I don’t have any vanilla ice cream. I will be making a trip to the store tomorrow. Yummy 🙂

Yes! This is great! Have you read those nasty ingredients that are in the “store bought” version. yuck! I don’t want my kids eating that stuff, but I have no problem with them eating a treat now and then if I know what is in it. Less processed, good oils, no preservatives, little to no food coloring…REAL food! Thanks Charlene!

Thank you! Where do you buy/find coconut oil? Does Trader Joe’s carry it? About how much does it cost?

    Jean,

Trader Joes has a good deal- usually about $5.99 for a jar. It will last you ages though and you can use it for everything from hair conditioner to making eggs to popping popcorn.

Safeway in my area carries it. It’s about $10 a jar there.

    Hi Charlene,
I just want to mention that this would be great to put an top of your own homemade ice cream! I have one of those ice cream bowl for the kitchen aid mixer and I have been making a great vanilla ice with just 4 ingredients. 1 quart of half/half, 1/2 cup of sugar, 2 vanilla beans or 2 tbs of vanilla and 1/4 tea. of salt put in mixer and mix until soft serve about 25mins. My kids love it and more natural then the store bought! Do you have any recipes for ice cream you could share? Thanks for all the great recipes!

Is there another kind of oil to use to make this? I am allergic to coconut.
    Thanks!

Thanks so much for sharing these yummy natural non preservative recipes! I don’t buy any junk at the store anymore, so I’m always looking for healthy, easy, more natural ways to eat and care for my skin…and I love coconut oil…….great for memory, Alzheimer’s, and more.

Jodee- the milk chocolate is not healthy but for sure 100x better then the stuff at the store. And seriously- seconds in the micro and this stuff is so amazing! I think if you switched to dark chocolate it would actually be fairly good for you. Dark Chocolate + Coconut Oil is a great choice for dessert- don’t you think?

I just made this and it’s great! So easy too. But I would think it would thicken or harden or thicken if kept in the fridge. Since bot ingredients are shelf stable can it be stored in the cupboard?
    Thanks!

Forgot to post that I did indeed make this over and over since the first time. We make homemade ice cream frequently for get togethers and celebrations. I really like it with some peanut butter added and then I dip my banana in. So tasty!!

Try adding the plain crushed up chocolate wafers and place between two..or one or three layers of ice cream for a knock off Carvel cake!

I’ll be mixing this topping with oreos and adding it to our homemade ice cream I’m making for a church picnic tomorrow!! So excited and can’t wait to try it. I’m 35 weeks pregnant and ice cream is my current addiction/obsession so it MIGHT make it to the picnic…we’ll just have to wait and see.

I’m not a big fan of chocolate (I do know how strange that is to most people) – do you think the butterscotch chips would work? We used to make butterscotch sauce for ice cream that hardened like that and we loved it. Haven’t had it in years. I think I’d like to try this. Thanks.

  27. Charlene says

    09/02/2015 at 7:55 PM

Gretchen, I think so or maybe toffee chips? I think those tend to dry out a lot though in the micro so it is worth a shot but you might need a teensy but more oil. Just add like a few chips and a dab of coconut oil and see what happens 🙂
