I think most people are already familiar with Apartment Guide as a resource for finding apartment rentals across the United States. Many of the properties they feature also have floor plans, comprehensive photographs and other information to help you find the perfect rental space. In addition, Apartment Guide also has tips for entertaining and decorating.
And I was recently challenged by Apartment Guide to come up with fun, budget-friendly, entertaining ideas in smaller spaces.
I am actually planning a birthday party for my nephew so I decided to take on this challenge and see what I can come up with! We initially planned a backyard BBQ but the weather has changed those plans. Not to worry, we decided to just continue the celebration indoors! This is my nephew’s 21st birthday so we are having a Mexican Fiesta (his favorite food) and I am hoping to pull together a fun, vibrant party to celebrate.
To make this challenge more exciting, Apartment Guide is offering a $100 gift card giveaway to one My Frugal Adventures reader!
You will get a $100 American Express gift card that can be used anywhere you like. This giveaway will run through Wednesday at 4pm PST.

Utilize the free programs in your area. My son’s 6th birthday happened to be on the same day as a free Thaddeus Rex concert in our area. We invited everyone to the local pizza place, we provided the ice cream cake dessert. Then headed to the concert. The library even had crafts available to make before the concert started. (party favors!). We had a great party and the cost …under $10.

We try to schedule the food around deals at the stores and what we have in our pantry so we don’t end up spending a ton of money on the food.

I guess my tip is the same as the type of party I would throw – something with easy, yummy, inexpensive appetizers from Trader Joe’s. 2 months ago I went to a soup and treats party – the host made 4 big pots of soup and everyone brought their own mug to serve themselves. So fun!
I would use it for a 3rd birthday party for my daughter.. probably backyardiganish
I like to make sure I can submit for rebates on the wine and liquor I buy for the party.

I shop after a holiday when everything is 50-90% off then stash it away for children’s birthday parties. You would be amazed what you can find super cheap that can be used as a gift, decoration or in a goodie bag! I would love a $100 gift card to help celebrate my daughter’s 3rd birthday coming up in May.

When I throw a party I like to just search through my cupboards and make treats (savory and sweet) with the stuff I already have. We threw a New Year’s Eve party and I only had to buy Chips and Salsa but we had tons of food!
My tip is to do your party at home and to also use finger foods. You don’t have to buy utensils and sometimes if it’s more snacking then a meal you can just get away with napkins, no plates

One of the reasons I love having a little stockpile is hosting parties – for the super bowl we had people over but most of the snacks I served involved items I already had in the pantry! Also, vases and other items around the house can be repurposed to fit with your theme by filling them with fun items, etc!

For my son’s 3rd birthday I bought a ton of Cars party decorations off Craigs List. Her house was really big and mine isn’t so all of the decorations really stood out at my house. The kids loved it. I am currently scouring CL for Star Wars decorations for this year. (or my friend and I might split the cost and both use them – parties will be one week apart)
I would host a baby shower for my sister. Make invities yourself can save you a TON of money.

My favorite budget friendly tip is to plan your party menu a few weeks in advance to stock up on items when the sales hit.

for my kid’s birthday parties – I plan ahead and grab deals on holiday clearance items (paper priducts, candy, items for party favors) and set them aside for later. I also google the theme and free printables to find cards and stickers and decorations that have been made available as PDFs, for my daughter’s recent owl-themed party, I found printable for making 3D owls to decorate with as well as coloring pages for an activity. I also used the tiny prints deal a few weeks ago to make custom owl labels with her name and age and used them on plain white paper products and on the party favors (covering Valentine’s motifs) to tie in with the decor.

My big tip is to always ask people to bring side dishes, makes the variety fun and cheaper on you. I would love to win this ast daughters first birthday is in march and we get to host two larger gatherings (both ironically in small spaces!). Would LOVE the gift card for food and decorations!
And I subscribe!
I would love to use it for a girls night out party!
