I think most people are already familiar with Apartment Guide as a resource for finding apartment rentals across the United States. Many of the properties they feature also have floor plans, comprehensive photographs and other information to help you find the perfect rental space. In addition, Apartment Guide also has tips for entertaining and decorating.
And I was recently challenged by Apartment Guide to come up with fun, budget-friendly, entertaining ideas in smaller spaces.
I am actually planning a birthday party for my nephew so I decided to take on this challenge and see what I can come up with! We initially planned a backyard BBQ but the weather has changed those plans. Not to worry, we decided to just continue the celebration indoors! This is my nephew’s 21st birthday so we are having a Mexican Fiesta (his favorite food) and I am hoping to pull together a fun, vibrant party to celebrate.
To make this challenge more exciting, Apartment Guide is offering a $100 gift card giveaway to one My Frugal Adventures reader!
You will get a $100 American Express gift card that can be used anywhere you like. This giveaway will run through Wednesday at 4pm PST.

For my kid’s birthday parties, I’ve always stocked up on various goody bag fillers when I see them on clearance. The kids have always loved my goody bags because they had such a variety of stuff and it cost next to nothing!

I would suggest a pot luck… you get a great variety and most people bring their favorite dishes, so it’s always a winner! I would make all the favors and decorations too. Include your kids and make it even more fun! Also, BYOB… it’s amazing how much you spend on alcohol at parties. Good luck!
Have a pita party! You provide beverages and dessert, and each guest brings an ingredient for the “pita bar”! I make some spicy chopped shrimp and cubed garlic chicken, and guests bring pitas, cucumbers, dressing, sprouts, tomatoes, olives, etc. Set up the “pita bar” with all the ingredients and everyone can fill a pita or two with their favorite ingredients! It’s great because you don’t have to work as hard as you would for a sit-down meal (ie: YOU get to have fun and socialize), and everyone can eat whatever they like!
When we have get-togethers with our friends I have everyone bring a dish to pass. You get a good assortment of food!! We do adult game nights too- drinks and board games!! can’t get much better than that!
I’d love to host a recipe exchange party and have tools to help everyone organize their recipe collections.

I would recommend making some of the food yourself if possible and get all of the party supplies at a local dollar store then going to party city… You will save tons. Hope I win 🙂

I would have a nice 1st birthday party for my daughter
Last year, we had a Yo Gabba Gabba! Birthday Party for my two year old triplets. I looked online for decorations and everything was super expensive. Then one day when I was looking for something completely unrelated on Craigslist, someone was selling YGG party decorations and favors left over from her son’s birthday party. I snatched the stuff up at a fraction of the price and I love the idea of using perfectly good things again! I plan on posting it for someone else and if it doesn’t sell, I’ll post it on Freecycle.

I would love to throw my son a huge Batman themed party for his 2nd birthday. To keep costs down I plan to make the food myself and make fun favor masks for all (not just the kids!)

My tip for a budget friendly party is to allow your guests to help you! If you are having a party that includes a meal make it a pot luck or assign your guests an appetizer, side dish or dessert and you provide the main entree. A great way to save on the cost of paper products is not to use them and use regular or plastic dishes instead. They can be washed and reused later. Most of the time you can pick up seasonal melamine plates at a great discount at the end of season clearance. Pick some up and store them for next year.
