Well this is very interesting. To be honest I thought I’d never see the day that we got a nice coupon policy from Walgreens IN PRINT and actually on their web site!! I think Walgreens might be the store I get the most complaints about so I am very happy to see this.
You can find the coupon policy here at Walgreens.com.
A few notes:
* The number of coupons may not exceed the number of items. We all know that of course and why fillers are needed at Walgreens.
*”In the event that any item’s selling price is less than the value of the coupon, Walgreens will only accept the coupon in exchange for the selling price of the item. Coupon redemption can never exceed the selling price of an item and no cash back is ever provided in exchange for any coupons.” YEAH! So they CAN and SHOULD adjust a coupon down. This is such a pain when you have a .99 item and a $1 coupon in particular and I have found one in ten cashiers will actually adjust down for you. The rest just say no.
*”When purchasing a single item, Walgreens accepts one manufacturer coupon and applicable Walgreens coupon(s) for the purchase of a single item, unless prohibited by either coupon offer.” I have had several questions about stacking coupons at Walgreens. The confusion seems to stem from the fact that some Walgreens coupon book coupons say “Manufacturer coupon” at the top. They are indeed store coupons and can be stacked.
*”When purchasing multiple items, Walgreens accepts multiple identical coupons for multiple qualifying items as long as there is sufficient stock to satisfy other customers, unless a limit is specified. Management reserves the right to limit the quantity of items purchased.” Some of you have had issues with this as well and it sounds like the store can determine how many you buy.
AND BEST OF ALL:
*”When items are featured in a Buy One, Get One Free promotion, up to two coupons can be used against the items being purchased, as long as the net price does not go below zero for the items being purchased.” So you absolutely CAN use a Buy One Get One coupon on a Buy One Get One sale and get both items free. You just need to pay tax!
What do you guys think? Will this help clear up any unpleasantness at your stores? I have to say even with this policy I still get jittery shopping at Walgreens.

I still won’t go to Walgreens unless they have moneymakers. I usually buy my milk and bread with the RR’s from these transactions. They are just such a pain with the coupons, and I would much rather go to CVS (which is now my favorite store)!!
Nikki says
This is perfect timing for the $4 coupons on the $3.99 Air Wick i motion sale this week. Now I dont have to worry about a headache, thanks so much!
Danielle says
WOW, well, at least now it is IN WRITING! Going to go print that one out right now and stick it in my binder for sure! 🙂 Thanks so much for the heads-up on this one. 🙂
Tiffany T says
Yeah! So excited about this! I am definitely printing this off and I might actually start shopping at Walgreens again…
Oh and I am not sure if this is a typo or not when you said, “The number of items may not exceed the number of coupons. We all know that of course and why fillers are needed at Walgreens.” Did you mean to say the number of COUPONS may not exceed the number of ITEMS?
christine says
wow! this is so cool. i called walgreens a few weeks ago to request a copy of their coupon policy. they told me they didn’t have one. maybe enough of us called that they decided to get one! 🙂
Charlene says
Hmm. Isn’t that the same thing Tiffany? Number of items may not exceed # of coupons or # of coupons may not exceed # of items. Isn’t that the same?
Tiffany T says
Charlene, I think you can definitely have more items then you have coupons in your transaction, but they won’t let you have more coupons then you have items (except in the case of a mfr and Wags coupon per item) ….
Jessica says
Nicole – It now says RR can’t be used to redeem dairy items 🙁 I’ve never done it, but I have many friends that do what you do, milk and eggs. Might make for many arguments!
Charlene says
@Jessica- I think they always said that? I have never had a problem buying milk there with them and I want to say they had no dairy always on there. My grocery store cats always say the same thing too- no dairy.
Charlene says
OOhhh ok when you say it like that it does make sense! Ok let me change that. Slight blonde moment there.
Tiffany T says
It’s OK Charlene …. 99% of the time I have ‘baby brain’ and can’t make heads or tails of half of anything!
Amy says
Re: Buying milk with RRs:
It does say no dairy, but I’ve only had one cashier ever say anything. I just completed my order and then went back and used it with another cashier, who I knew would take it. Most don’t even look at it.
Dee says
Interesting news! I actually stopped going to Walgreens altogether 2 months ago. It was NOT worth the hassle and embarrassment at the checkout counter.
I could never use the $1 coupons for 99 cent items; they are usually out of stock on everything; plus they will NOT write a raincheck for any item that gets register rewards. They will only give you the sale price, but to me the rr is part of the sale, so it’s kind of like false advertising.
I’m looking forward to hearing how others make out with the “new” policy. Good luck to all — I hope it works.
Kathleen says
Whoo hoo! My Wags always gives me beef when I try to use a $4 mfg on a $3.99 item etc.. AND she’s just mean! I can’t wait to pull this one out! 🙂
Nicole says
Jessica-I honestly never even noticed the “no diary” on the RR’s. Oops!
Brooke says
Great news!!! ….Now, if only they could actually train & inform their employees and managers, it would be even better!
LaWanda says
I’m very glad to hear this….I’m printing TWO copies in case I lose one. Walgreens used to be my favorite store but over the past couple of years, they had gotten worse and worse about the coupons…I even had to call their corp office one time about an incident with a coupon. And remember those .99 coupons for the sample of Purina One dog food? Walgreens was the only place I could find them and they were a dollar and of course the idiot cashier refused to adjust it down the one penny. That really irked me and I’d decided then to focus on CVS instead of Walgreen…especially since my fiance works there and I can use his discout!
Amy says
Thank you! Thank you! Since UP Rewards began, RA is my first choice and I still really like CVS. But if a deal comes up I can’t refuse, it’s nice to know this exists.
stephanie says
I was in Walgreens yesterday and tried to use a $3 Nivia coupon while it was on sale for $2.50. The cashier would not accept it. I even told her that in the past the cashiers would adjust it down. She refused saying that if they did that the mfg would not reimburse them. Wish I would have had the coupon policy with me – next time I will.
Jana says
I am excited! My Walgreens will not price adjust coupons. So I miss out on alot of good deals because they won’t price adjust one cent!
Lacey says
Question: Are they still not allowing you to use a RR on an item that you get a RR back? Not the same item but a different item. I was in the months ago and had a RR I got from a hair product. I used it to buy pampers and it didn’t print out my RR from the pampers. The manager said it was because I used a RR to buy the pampers so it wasn’t going to give me more. Yes I used a RR, but I also paid the difference and it wasn’t the same item. I could see it not giving it to me if I used a RR from pampers to buy more pampers. I haven’t shopping Walgreens the same since. I go once a month or so. CVS is my store now.
Charlene says
Lacey, the only reason it won’t print is if you buy from the same brand. So you could buy Ragu and roll that to buy Skippy PB but they are both the same company- Unilever- so it won’t print. You probably bought Herbal Essences or something else from P&G and that would explain why.
It can be a real pain with the big companies to try and remember who makes what. Otherwise no that manager is incorrect. If you buy say Vaseline and roll that to buy Crest you will be fine 🙂 Make sense?
Billie says
Thank you so much for the policy! I have fought many a battle at Walgreens registers. I demand the manager and if the coupon still isn’t accepted, I demand names of those who refused my coupons. I have always had my coupons accepted, especially after I want names to send to Walgreens headquaters and the manufacturer’s headquarters.
Hopefully this will end the battles. thank you
Annette says
I am new to all of this and am in need of an explanation. So this week I went and bought stuff and have RR to use on my next shopping trip. So for example, next week if I buy toothpaste and have a store coupon, a manufacture coupon and a RR will I be able to do that? Use all 3 coupons on one item? Thanks for the help.
Charlene says
No Annette because the RR is basically a manufacturer coupon. So if you have a tube of Crest the register is going to think you are using a store coupon and (2) Crest coupons. What you need is a filler item to use that RR toward. The filler item is something that you do not use a coupon on. So maybe a piece of candy for .25 or a clearance notepad for .25 or something. Walgreens is the most difficult of the drugstores IMO because of these quirks with RR.
Jeremy says
Can you use a B1G1 Free Coupon and a $1/1 Manufacturer coupon on (2) Aussie or Herbal Essence shampoos?
Stephanie says
I am still confused with the coupons. Let’s take this weeks deal of 99cent reach toothbrushes. Can I use the walgreens store coupon for 99 cents then 3 manufacture coupons if I buy 3 of them? Cause that’s 4 coupons. Thanks
Charlene says
Stephanie you are confusing store coupons with manufacturer coupons. In general you may use a total of 1 manufacturer coupon per item you purchase. Certain stores will also allow you to stack a store coupon on top of that to total 2 coupons per item. In this case, Walgreens does allow that. So you have a total of one manufacturer coupon and a total of 1 store coupon per product. That is allowed.

Did anyone else witness this problem this week??
I was at my Walgreens checking out with multiple transactions, when the checker got all snotty with me telling me “You know that there is a new Walgreens policy now that you can only purchase ONE of any of the Register Reward items per sale each week…and you can’t split them up over several transactions.” I had not heard this and she said that it’s a new policy that corporate emailed out to all the stores. It’s the first that I have heard of this….but how do they expect to police this??? You can go to another store and purchase the same item and they won’t know. You can go back another day in the same week and have another checker check you out. This is actually the second checker that told me this, and I had the Manager verify that this is now the policy….and she said yes. If this is going to be the new policy, I will for sure be shopping a LOT less at Walgreens and probably stopping my Register Reward deals almost all together unless it is something I can’t do without. 🙁 Really sad….I will be spending a lot more time at Rite Aid it seems.
skizzatt says
Walgreens still needs to do something about their Register Reward deals. The stores in Jefferson City, MO are always out of the items and usually don’t get a new supply before the ad expires. I think if the company cannot supply adequate items for their sales, they should offer rainchecks for those items plus the Register Rewards.
I am sick and tired of going to Walgreens and getting cheated out of those items!!! Talk about customer no service! When this happens week after week, it gets old very quickly.
Wake up Walgreens, value the loyal customers you have and aim to keep us.
Kathy says
I agree, Walgreens is a pain in the you know what! They had a RR deal a while back and the manager actually had it sent from another store so I could do the deal (she’s done that twice). So you can always see if your manager will do this for you. If they can’t or won’t do that then I agree, they should give you a rain check and also give you the RR!!! I was at CVS a few days ago and on the rain check it even had a spot for then to write in the reward so you still got it. I was almost in shock! lol Walgreens is so hard to understand! I just wish I didn’t have to go out of town to CVS and there is no Rite Aid in the area. Bummer.
jen cowden says
I went to walgreens this week trying to get the schick shave gels bogof offer and use two coupons. they refused me the use of my coupons. I wrote to corporate. I was pretty upset. 🙁 I had just used two coupons a couple weeks ago and didn’t have a problem at all. I went to the manager with the coupon policy in hand was still refused. I was super nice but had to take this to corperate in hopes something will be done.
Walter says
I had recently had a coupon problem at Walgreen’s not addressed here. I tired to buy the B1G2F Scotch tape with the $1.00 Scotch Tape coupon I printed from the Scotch website. The Walgreen’s store manager claimed that that coupon was fraudulent, that Scoth would not reimburse them for it, and refused to accept it. I had never heard of Walgreen’s refusing to take internet coupons, but the claim that that Scotch coupon was fraudulent shocked and embarrassed me. I have scratched them off my shopping list.
Bridget says
I will be printing the new policy and keeping it in my purse. I’ve had several run-ins with management at Walgreens over cashiers that won’t accept my coupons or allow certain things to be stacked store & manufacture coupon because it makes something free or “too cheap” as they’ve told me. I have 2 local Walgreens to chose from and my first choice just dropped to last choice last week with their rude attitudes on coupons and I also had a RR issue where they didn’t print and I was told it was because I used manufacturer coupons on my shampoo & hairspray. I did eventually get my RR but it was a long drawn out deal while other customers huffed and puffed at me. I need to learn the CVS deals and how they work and start giving them my business.
Newbie101 says
In my Walgreens ad there is an in store coupon for “Dawn Dish Liquid” for $.99. In my 5/01 PG there is a man. coupon for $.50/1 “One Dawn Plus” product. Can I stack these together to get them half off??
Newatthis101 says
I know you probably been asked and have told this a thousands times but im still trying to figure this all out i have three coupons for the Gillette proglide and i want to use them and get the same deal and rewards but im not knowing how to really do this?
Charlene says
Hi New- so you mean you want to know how to get 3 razors? Well in my opinion it is a pain. You need to “roll” the Register Reward into a 2nd item that is not made by Proctor and Gamble. You can’t use a Register Reward to buy the same item again. This week there is not a lot to roll the rewards into so I don’t even have a suggestion for you 🙁 You could save them for next week- they will have a sunburn gel for $3.99 with a $3.99 RR back. So you could use your Gillette RR to pay for that (+ a small filler to hit $4) and roll that reward…. Another idea would be to just do 3 transactions and pay for the razors, keep your (3) $4 rewards and then next week they have a probiotic for $12 with a mail in rebate of $12. So you could buy that + 2 fillers in order to use 3 RR and get your money back in a rebate…. Anyway, this is a month long deal so you don’t have to buy them this week 🙂
Single_Dad says
If you are looking for deals to use Register Rewards at Walgreen’s this week, you might look at EZ flossing picks (free after reward) or Cottontelle tissue (very cheap after Walgreen’s coupond and mfg coupon). If you scored the Comet 25 cent coupon from the internet, you can stack with Walgreen’s coupon and get one for 25 cents. If you are just short of fully using your reward (or have more coupons than items), add in some 50 cent Geisha mandarin orange cans or mushrooms, or some cheaps mailers (39 cents). Good luck!
Lindalee says
Just wanted to know if anyone out there know this answer can you use a coupon from the walgreens coupon booklet of the month and a manufactor coupon all for the same item.
Charlene says
Yes you can Lindalee. Typically you want to give the MQ coupon first and then the Walgreens one.
lindalee says
well my stores manager would not let me i showed him the coupon policy and he said that is not the booklet they are refering to and he said on the monthly booklet they say manufactor coupon on them so now i dont know what to do

I finally had a run in with a local Walgreens manager today. He tried implying I was returning something I used a coupon on, and giving me a hard time. He said “Walgreens staff gets overwhelmed and rather upset when people just throw coupons at them and expect us to just accept every last one and make exceptions so they can get the deals. It is very frustrating for us and thats why we have such problems.” Happy to say, especially after seeing I am not the only one who has problems with Walgreens, that I defended us and said- Well yes, and it seems most of the Walgreens come up with the coupon rules and policies as they go, and thats not fair to us and its frustrating for us when we have families and we are trying to save money. I finally ended the conversation with this, and thats why we got smart and all of us carry the corporate coupon policy in our purses! Some nerve, to basically imply we annoy them with coupons. Hmm.. seems I will be calling to complain about a certain manager tomorrow.

I am still confused about one thing. I went to Walgreens this morning and bought 9 items. I had 6 coupons and 3 RR, but only 1 RR went through. I had to get 2fillers to make the other 2 work. I just don’ t understand why. The cashier said something about not combining coupons that exceed the price??? Thanks if you can help me!
Ann says
Walgreens has had the same coupon policy in effect for at least 2 years. RR have always said and couponers should read the fine print on coupons no valid on dairy, tobacco, gift cards or prescriptions or phone cards. When a limit is impossed it is to give everyone a chance that means don’t be greedy and say well i have several transactions same some for someone else walgreens is not a warehouse or discount store play nice with others and share you don’t need 20 bodywash or deodorant or 20 razors just to save you money you only save when you buy within reason
Lorena says
I was in Wallgreens yesterday and did the Gillette razor deal but added a 2nd razor hoping to get the 10RR + 2 5RR, I got the 10RR but only one 5RR, the clerk was sweet and explained that the system will only alow one RR for the same item, so she and the manager voided the transaction and did a new one where I paid for the 2nd razor sepreately. I got all 3 RR’s, clerk and manager were super, did not make me feel stup** and were patient.
Now, my question is how to redeem the RR, I’m trying to read the fine print and all but have not found clear instructions. What I do gather is that the RR cannot be more than the total purchase? and that when using a RR and manufacturer copons together, that total # of coupons cannot exceed total # of items purchased? please correct me.
My scenerio:
Ban deodorant 1.99 – .50 Wag coupon – .75 Manu coupon
Ban deodorant 1.99 – .50 Wag coupon – .75 Manu coupon
Glad trash bags 6.99 – 1.00 Wag coupon – .75 Manu coupon
Dawn Dish soap .99 – .50 Manu coupon
sub total 7.71 , then I hand over the 5RR from P&G for the razor deal and it beeps 🙁 cashier told me to add an item, ok I added a candy adding .69 then the 5RR went through 🙂 great, ok now I hand over the 2RR from a BIC deal and again the register beeps 🙁 again I add another candy for .69 and now the 2RR goes through.
subtotal 1.59 +tax so $2.60 total
how can I have avoided the extra candy purchase? did I have too many coupons? (bless anyone who actually finished reading this)
CandyFoote says
Thanks for this update!

The Walgreens by me says they have a new policy that you can only use one register rewards coupon per transaction per day. I was not happy with this and have not been back since. Does every store have to follow the coupon policy or is at the discretion of each store???
Charlene says
It is just your store Melanie 🙁 More and more are enforcing limits though due to Extreme Couponing 🙁

Hi just wanted to put in my 2 cents. Went to walgreens 07-19-2011 to get the baby items huggies, pampers They would not take the Q from the baby book 2.00 and a mfg. Q. 1.50 for the pampers and .50 on huggies wipes. I bought 3 at 9.99 for the deal 5.00 off 25.00 . I used the 2.00 it was higher did not get 5.00 rr back ? they said first I didn’t spend 25.00 had to show him I did he had it in his hands ,then said I paid with a rr from them? He said they call walgreens july book Mfg.Q to use only at walgreens. And he can’t keep giving away stuff to you people And for me to let you all know that!!!!! this Walgreens is in New Braunfels Tx. He also made something about her keeping her job? Not 2 weeks before he said he loves his couponers. Now was that a dig or the truth. Think not. The one Walgreens in Seguin Texas is the one I use most because the other is 25 miles away. Now they have a sign up that says 3 trans per day thats ok But the Lady Mfg. is so rude I have neverrrrrrrrrr got a hello or can I help you or nothing. Now last week they made a mistake on my tape and not even a sorry she walked over and handed me my money and walked away.
acted mad at me for taking up her time. cust. sevice suck at Walgreens. Another time she got huffy at me because it wouldn’t take the sale paper Q. I said that is your Q. not mine. I nicked name her Stoneface I don’t think Walgreens would like to know how rude and don’t ask me anything she puts off by her body langage. She got huffy and had someone come and tell me I couldn’t get all this I had 4 BIGI I didnot get the same of all 8 so the shelf had some for others only could use 3 BIGI
