I haven’t done a reading list in ages and thought it would be fun to put one together with some books I have read recently and some on my TBR pile.
Hopefully there is a little something for everyone and I’d love to hear your recommendations if you have enjoyed something recently.
The Women by Kristin Hannah – I really loved this novel telling the story of a young woman that volunteers as a nurse to serve in Vietnam. She goes from being a very sheltered teenager to a strong, capable woman all in the backdrop of the war- the politics, the relationships and the working environment. She struggles once she returns to civilian life with so many issues of the time, sexism, heartbreak, the anti-war public opinion, medical issues related to Agent Orange and so much more… If you read one book this year, make it this one.
Camino Ghosts by John Grisham – I hope I am not the only one that still looks forward to every single Grisham book release. This is the third book in his series- Camino Island, Camino Wind and now Camino Ghosts. Once again Mercer Mann gets involved in the story of an elderly woman that is the last obstacle between a developer and a stretch of island between Georgia and Florida. The developers are not aware of the history of the island that might not be so long in the past…
Long Island by Colm Toibin– I loved the novel Brooklyn from several years ago so I jumped when I saw Colm Toibin had a new novel out. This is the story of an Irishwoman, married to an Italian-American and living with his family in New York in the 1970’s. One day there is a knock at the door with a man claiming her husband got another woman pregnant and now they would be responsible for the child. How does the woman react to such a shock?
The Next Mrs Parrish by Liv Constantine Ok I really liked the First Mrs Parrish novel- it was a fast and absorbing read for me with a bit of a twist I wouldn’t have guessed. This is the second book in the series.
The Summer Pact by Emily Giffin Oh I love Emily Giffen and I can’t wait for this to be released in July. It is the story of 4 college roommates that become inseparable over the four years together and just before graduation there is a tragedy that brings them even closer together, vowing to be there for each other for the rest of their lives. Ten years post graduation, one of them calls on the others for a little support and soon realizes they all are facing upheaval in their lives.
The Rom-Commers by Katherine Center Katherine Center can be counted on for light and easy beach reads that are typically very hard to put down. This is the story of an idealistic, young screenwriter that gets a chance to write with one of her heroes. Once she meets him, she quickly realizes he may not be anything like what she imagined and worse yet, he doesn’t care about the script. It is up to her to convince him that the script deserves a chance and there is such a thing as true love…
Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus I watched this series awhile back and enjoyed it but I never did pick up the book. It got rave reviews at release and I can see why. This is such a sweet story of a brilliant female chemist that experiences set back after set back in the pursuit of science. Elizabeth is not easily intimidated and falls into a public role on a wildly popular cooking show. On the show, she not only teaches women how to cook simple, delicious meals but always challenges and encourages them to challenge the status quo. This is really a beautiful and very unique story and I highly recommend.
Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez. This is the story of Justin and Emma. Unlucky at love and seemingly jinxed to have ex’s find true love immediately after dating them. When a turn of events bring the two together, they decide to pretend to date and see if they can’t break the jinx. Each one faces pretty major life events and suddenly it seems maybe their luck has changed…
