I haven’t done a book rec list in ages and what better time than the start of summer. I out together a list of the books on my TBR list and hopefully some of these appeal to you guys as well.
Happy Place: Emily Henry A classic beach read about a couple that has broken up but find themselves needing to pretend for just one week to still be together. As they try to pretend in front of their closest friends, they discover maybe breaking up wasn’t the best idea after all.
The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece: Tom Hanks Something a little different but I love everything about Tom Hanks’so I added his latest novel to the list without even reading the description. This is the story of a returning WWII solider who shares his story with his 5 year old nephew. Years later the nephew creates a popular comic book series featuring his uncle. Years after that, a modern day director finds the comic books and creates a new super hero series based on the young man. This is so interesting and different from anything I have read before. I really want to listen to this one on audiobook because if Tom Hanks is reading it, I bet the story really comes to life.
Bad Summer People: Emma Rosenblum Another fantastic beach read when your brain needs a little break from real life. This is the story of a highly exclusive and wealthy community filled with back stabbing and self absorbed concerns. When a resident is found murdered, the residents worry about home values dropping, not so much about who committed the crime. If you love reality tv like the Housewives, Selling Sunset, VdPR etc… this is a perfect summer book for you.
Did You Hear About Kitty Karr: Crystal Smith Paul When glamorous, silver screen star Kitty Karr leaves her multimillion dollar home to three young black women, questions arise. As the women start to go through Kitty’s belongings, they begin to discover secrets Kitty kept from her early childhood to her star studded years as a celebrity.
The Last Thing He Told Me: Laura Dave I read this and wanted to mention it because not only is it a great book but it is also becoming a tv series on Apple +. It is the story of newlywed Owen, who suddenly disappears after a white collar crime is uncovered at his place of employment. A mysterious note is the only thing he leaves for his wife- “Protect Her”- leaving his wife to uncover the mystery of his disappearance and to take care of his teenage daughter.
Zero Days: Ruth Ware This is more of a thriller to mix things up a bit. The story of a husband and wife duo that specialize in hacking security systems and breaking into buildings. When the husband suddenly turns up murdered, everyone is focused on the wife for answers. It is up to her to clear her name and discover who the true killer is.
I Will Teach You To Be Rich: Ramit Sethi I wanted to include non fiction in the list and I thought this budget book is probably something a lot of us might find useful. It includes details on basic personal finance like budgeting, saving, investing. I was thinking something like this would be great to read for summer, make notes and action plans and be ready to get organized once the structure of school is back in session.
True Love Experiment: Christina Lauren This book is everywhere as the beach read of summer 2023. It is the story of Fizzy, a wildly successful romance writer that finds herself cast in a reality tv show looking for love. Her producer, Conner is a serious filmmaker that suddenly finds himself thrown into a world totally unfamiliar to his regular life. A classic and fun romance for summer.
The Soulmate: Sally Hepworth Ok one last thriller about a happy couple that purchase their dream home on a coastal cliff in a small town. Unbeknownst to them, that cliff is a popular location for desperate people to jump to their death. As they begin to find these people and rescue them, one victim turns out to be very well known to the husband, Gabe. Questions swirl around about his involvement in the woman’s death and what exactly his relationship with her was…
