The first project I tackled this year was a mini-redo of my 10 year old’s bedroom. She had been asking for a little update and part of her Christmas gifts was the promise to update her room with a new rug, new bedding and fresh paint. I actually love how this room turned out and thought I’d share some of the details.
I wasn’t so sure about the lilac color my daughter seems to love all the sudden. I actually don’t see a lot of options in purple as far as room decor and I wanted her bedroom moving more toward tween and not toward toddler. I definitely didn’t want Dora the Explorer purple. We tested out about six different shades of purple- once they are on the wall you can really see the pink undertones v. grey/blue undertones. She lived with the samples for a day and decided on Winter Ice by Behr.
Next up was deciding if I wanted to keep the beadboard- this was actually the first project we ever did way back in 2008 and it isn’t our finest work. I’d like to replace it with a much higher quality board and batten that is higher up on the wall. After going back and forth we decided to just keep it as is but give it a fresh coat of white paint. I do want to add trim to the window and upgrade the builder grade trim around the closet and doorway in the coming months and I think that will make a big difference.
Anyway, the fresh coat of purple is so pretty and fresh and I really love it. Her room is pretty small so the light color makes it look just a little bigger.
I updated the art as well to this printable from House of Belonging that I love. Her frame is a 24 x 36 size from Michael’s and I can have digital images printed for $15 at Walgreens- so very easy to change up the art frequently.
Hoping she can keep her dresser looking neat. I randomly change her quote depending on what is going on, right now keeping the room neat is a priority so hopefully Alexa can help with that. 😉
And last but not least, I bought the cutest stuffed animal at Anthropologie over the holidays.
I don’t normally look for or buy toys from Anthropologie but this little sheep pillow is the cutest and softest thing. Would be absolutely perfect for Easter baskets this year.
I love how this turned out and it was really budget friendly. This is what her room looked like before:
And here is the budget breakdown:
- Paint and Supplies: $100 (lavender, white plus samples)
- Rug: $55 (Black Friday sale)
- Artwork: $27 ($12 digital print, $15 printing fee)
- Lavender Blanket: $22 (Black Friday sale)
- Faux Lilacs + Faux lavender basket: $35 (she has major allergies to fresh flowers)
Total: $239
Not bad at all!
Here are a few of the things I used in her bedroom:
