We just updated my little girl’s bedroom and I thought I’d share some of the updates we made. I have such a love hate relationship with updating rooms and home decor in general. So much of what I see on Pinterest and Instagram is so incredibly over the top expensive. This little room redo lives in reality and set us back just a few hundred dollars. (As opposed to a bedroom I fell in love with on Pinterest that added up to over $17,000. For a child’s bedroom. In my book $17,000 is a car. Not a room for my 8 year old. #CanIGetanAmen?)
So here is Maya’s updated bedroom- from little girl to bigger little girl – still sweet and young but not too precious. Maya loves all things pink and girly and sparkly and I love that about her so I tried to keep some really soft details in the room that I thought she would really love.
Ready? Come on in!
Unicorns are her current favorite so I included them in a few spots throughout the room- this Mr Unicorn greets you as you enter.
Book Set // Rug // Ring Pulls for Dresser
We got this dresser from Ikea for a great price but it came with black knobs- I ordered these rings from Lowe’s in silver and spray painted them gold and that simple change made a big difference to the look of the dresser.
One of our favorite book collections rests on the dresser along with a picture from Pottery Barn Kids and our favorite candle from Anthro.
I added a gold lantern from World Market with some plastic unicorns inside and Maya says that is her favorite part of the entire room.
We are slowly reading through all of these classics- Anne of Green Gables was first up and the Secret Garden is right after that.
Stuffed animals are an issue for both of my girls so the rule is they can have as many as they can fit in their respective baskets. Once the basket is full, they have to trade one out for each new one that comes in. I love this basket I picked up recently at World Market. It also has her little mermaid blanket that she uses for reading and an extra plush bunny pillow.
Flamingo (I might change it out for the swan… not sure ) //Pooh Bear// Knit Plush // Sheer Drapes
It has been so hot this summer she just sleeps with sheets and this duvet from Ikea- in the coming month I want to get a coverlet and a soft, cozy throw for fall and winter.
The main wall is hard to photograph because her room is so small but we have two large frames and then I created these simple little floral embroidery hoop wreaths to fill up that big wall. These were mostly inspired by the embroidery hoop trend I have been seeing all over weddings on Pinterest but Cotton Stem blog does a lovely job with embroidery hoops as well.
And every little girl’s room needs a teepee right? This corner has always been a reading nook and used to contain a bean bag chair but we have upgraded to a teepee and my daughter uses this every single day. This is iPad headquarters, sneak treats from the kitchen that Mom doesn’t see, homework, reading and who knows what else time. Ours is from Hobby Lobby (I used a coupon on my purchase to make this one about $65. I did price out the materials to build one and it was roughly $50 so not a huge savings to DIY. I really liked this one from Target but the color didn’t quite match. Etsy has tons of gorgeous ones too.)
The “rug” is just two yards of fabric from Hobby Lobby (washable!) plus some Ikea pillows and a very large unicorn companion.
And that is it. Maya’s new bedroom that she loves and that I love.
Hope you enjoyed her little room makeover. This entire room was well under $500 and that does include the brand new dresser. #winning

Amen! I have an 8 year old daughter too and would not spend $17K on furnishing her bedroom. Amen on the stuffed animals too…my daughter loves them and actually plays with a number of hers quite frequently. Where did you get the square white wooden carving? I’ve been watching/pricing several round and square ones around the various decor website and they can be pricey…especially since I probably want to of them to put on opposite side of my fireplace. Hope your girl enjoys her updated room. 🙂

Ha ha! Thanks Tamara! Sets unrealistic expectations don’t you think? The wood piece is from Home Goods! I know it was under $40 when I bought it awhile back. It was art in a random section but believe it or not I have seen wood gates in the pet aisles that I think would look fantastic on a wall. 🙂
