I thought it would be fun for September to do a quick little post with some ideas for little girl’s hairstyles. This is something I have really struggled with as I am definitely not a hair expert. I really envy the Moms that can do beautiful braids and adorable little curls – totally not my gift. I try and follow a You Tube video and the hair winds up looking like my girls have gone through a wind tunnel instead of to a sleek salon.
Also mornings. Mornings are tough because no matter how early I wake up or how much I prepare the night before, it still seems like a mad dash to get to school.
So here are some very simple ideas that take almost no time to do and I feel a little better at drop off that that my kids look somewhat pulled together. (At least until recess.)
To start with I have learned that blowing drying hair makes a huge difference. In the past my girls would shower at night, I would brush their hair out and then it would usually air dry before bed. Now I try to take 5 or 1o minutes and actually blow dry and I can’t believe what a difference it makes. The kids are so rough on their hair with swimming and sports, I have been using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and I can totally see a difference.
First up is a super quick half braid. This is great for days she wants to wear her hair down but still have it out of her face for class and recess.
I start with a small section of hair in the front and do a very simple braid on the top of the head and then secure it with a rubber band and leave the rest of the hair free.
I usually finish this with a ribbon with long ends and if I have time I might even do a few loose curls. Again I don’t like a lot of product but I did add a spritz of Suave Sea Mineral Sea Salt Spray which helps keep the waves in her hair.
Next up is a simple chignon. Again I am not gifted when it comes to hair and all the tutorials I have seen to do a chignon seem complicated but this is my cheater method that is super simple. I think it looks soft and pretty and it looks even better with a flower headband or little curls around the face.
To do this little hairdo takes just minutes. I separate the hair down the middle. Quickly twist it from one side- my daughter pinches the twist to hold it in place while I twist the other side. Then I put the two twisted sides into a ponytail.
Next I take the end of her ponytail and push that over and through the V section at the nape of her neck. It creates a soft loop of hair and I use bobby pins to secure the ends of the hair under that loop.
This works a little better on my older daughter that has shoulder length hair.
Next up is a fun and crazy simple idea to do a faux ribbon braid. I love this for school spirit days and for holidays. It just looks so fun and festive.
This takes literally minutes to do. Just start with a standard ponytail. I like to tie a long ribbon around the ponytail.
Then just twist the ribbon around the pony.
Now use an elastic at the bottom of the pony and tuck the ends of the ribbon into the elastic. Trim the ends and you are done!
My girls take ballet classes so buns are a regular part of our life. I love an easy bun to keep hair out of the way at school and because they are just so simple. Normally I don’t like a lot of product in the girl’s hair but for the bun above, I spritz lightly with Suave Luxe Blow Dry Spray and it calms all those flyaways down.
For this bun I just did a simple twisted bun, secured it with a second rubberband and then clipped a cute little bow underneath. If you don’t have a smaller bow, a thin ribbon tied around the bun also looks very cute.
Last but not least are simple little pigtails. I divide the hair into pigtails, secure with elastic. Then I push a hole in the center of the pigtail and pull the ends of the pigtail through.
And the finished product.
I hope you have a little hair inspiration for your own children.

Love these! I’m so low maintenance, but I feel like these will help me look like I put some effort into my girls’ hair!

I am super low maintenance too Aubrey! I wish I had the talent and patience for lovely hair but sadly it isn’t to be 😉
