My daughter and I have been learning to sew this summer and we have a really basic Singer Sewing Machine that was a gift from years ago.  I absolutely hate it- it jams and creates so many problems.

I definitely suggest stepping up a bit into a nicer machine.  We were literally at Joann’s just yesterday because the machine wouldn’t thread and I was talking to the sewing center help person about upgrading and this is the exact machine she recommended.  This guy was priced at $159 in stores yesterday and today it is $107 with free shipping.
