Oh.my.lanta. Never have I been so hooked on a TV show since Orange is the New Black and before that the Sopranos and before that possibly Beverly Hills 90210. (Let’s keep that last one just between us though. #TeamDylan)
I absolutely love Fixer Upper. Joanna is literally magical with the spaces she transforms and Chip is the big brother I always wanted. The show is so fun and so entertaining and most of all incredibly inspiring.
Do you love it too? Joanna’s design aesthetic is so unique and simple and beautiful. If you are as interested in incorporating some of her style in your own home, I thought I’d round up some highlights from the last three seasons of the show and try to find similar items so you can get the Fixer Upper look too.
The beauty about Fixer Upper is that while all the homes look unique to me, Joanna uses a lot of the same elements over and over again in her designs.
Here goes:
Joanna does lots of chalkboards that are simple and rustic. I have a chalkboard that is almost exactly the same as this one but Joanna’s genius is to drill holes in the top and add a little rope for extra texture. I am adding this detail to our chalkboard pronto.
Joanna always keeps the color scheme simple with a few pops of color that mostly come from fresh flowers or fruit. The backsplash in this kitchen is so stunning but I absolutely love the little pop of green from the Jadeite salt and pepper shakers too.
Joanna incorporates lots of wood to add warmth to kitchens. She tends toward white and soft grey colors and blues in kitchens and the rustic wood adds so much texture to the spaces.
Cutting boards play into kitchen spaces regularly and propped up against a backsplash they are a simple way to add a little interest that is still very functional. I love the simple cutting board above with french bread or below with fruit and cheese- such a casual and charming display when you have guests over.
I see a lot of natural elements in Joanna’s kitchens like wood accents, fresh flowers or fruit, rustic cutting boards and terra cotta. Two other things she uses over and over in kitchen include vintage kitchen scales and galvanized metal. In the kitchen above you see a galvanized metal watering can and below a galvanized serving tray.
PS: A similar tray has been used as a boot tray in some homes and on side tables with books and flower arrangements. Super versatile!
Joanna uses mason jars all over her homes. She uses them for flower groupings and a lot in kitchens for open shelving and for setting a little entertaining space. She tends to use larger, wide mouth jars not the standard pint jars– see them in the top left corner above. This is the kitchen in the Magnolia Bed & Breakfast but I have seen these same jars in numerous other spaces including this kitchen from season 3:

If you can look past the darling picture of Chip & Joanna you will see an adorable vintage bread box. I love it! I found a very similar one below that comes in several color choices.
This is one of my favorite kitchen makeovers. That Herringbone tile! Stunning! Can you also spot the wood cutting board, wide mouth Ball Jar and vintage kitchen scale- lol? Also note the cookbook stand. She uses this in almost every single kitchen. I believe I found a very similar one that you will find below.
Two more quick things I notice in virtually all the Fixer Upper kitchen remodels:
Joanna loves a coffee nook and almost always has this gorgeous coffeemaker and an anchor hocking jar filled with coffee beans. I actually have this exact same jar filled with ground coffee and now I feel terribly stylish and cool. If only I had the swank coffee maker too.
Joanna uses this soap and lotion caddy over and over. You can buy the fancy one once and always refill it with your soap and lotion of choice. This is the only thing she usually has around the sink to keep things looking clean and crisp.
And here are a bunch of copycat items I found for you to create this look in your kitchen!
Chalkboard / Green Glass Salt and Pepper / Round Cutting Board / Ball 24oz Wide Mouth Jars / Vintage Kitchen Scale / Galvanized Metal Tray / Vintage Bread Box / Cookbook Stand / Soap Caddy/ Coffee Jar
And you see in many of the photos above that Joanna uses a lot of cookbooks as decor. Here are the cookbooks she uses:
Honey & Jam / First Prize Pies/ Homemade (note there are three different cookbooks) / HomeGrown/ America Farm to Table/ Smoke & Pickles
Happy Decorating!
PS: Why not try making this homemade lemonade recipe while you are doing your shopping? I think Joanna would approve.
I can’t believe you found so many copycat items; this post must have taken a lot of time! I love this though! We have been renting for a while but are hoping to buy a house soon, and I am totally pinning this post for my new home ideas! Thanks Charlene!
Oh.my.shiplap. Love the show and all her designs! Just gorgeous!
Ha ha Kimberly it did 🙂 But what was so funny is that when I looked at the kitchens I was like- oh there’s the round cutting board again, oh there are the ball jars, oh there is the coffee jar, oh there is the vintage scale. She really does use the same props over and over yet each space looks so unique.
Ha ha! Oh my shiplap is right 🙂
