By now most of us have heard of Stitch Fix and I thought I’d do a very quick post to introduce you to the service if you are not as familiar with it.
I totally wasn’t into the idea of Stitch Fix at first but I had several very stylish and put-together friends mention the service and I decided to finally give it a shot.
Here is the down and dirty overview of what it is:
What is Stitch Fix:
A personal shopper for you that pulls together outfits based on what you like, your measurements and what you might need (party clothes, casual clothes, work outfits etc..) as well as price points that you set.
You will go in and fill in a few quick questions with your measurements, budget for items and a general idea of what you like. If you want to create a pinterest board of fashion ideas, that makes it even easier for the stylist to see what might work. (My board is here or Stitch Fix has a board too that is easy and fast to pin from.)
They pull items together based on what you say you want- I told them I needed lightweight layering pieces for fall that were casual but still looked nice. I also asked for one date night or cocktail party outfit. Note I am in CA so my clothing is for our 90 degree fall weather. If you live in a colder climate they will customize things for you.
Who Would Use This Service?
I think this really makes sense for those that don’t like to shop a lot (ME!). If I go to the mall looking for items for myself, I wind up leaving with 6 bags of things for my girls and nothing except a Latte for me.
If you are short on time and can not run around from store to store trying to find cute clothes to wear, this might be something to consider. Some of you might live in smaller towns without a lot of stores to choose from or have small children and going shopping just might be too hard at this season of life. And lastly, if you have always wanted a personal shopper or a friend to just help you find things that you might not normally pick out- this might be for you.
I wanted to try it because I am totally in a fashion rut and always gravitate to the same things. I want to look pulled together when I am getting my kids and not like a hot mess in old t-shirts and jeans. When I used to work outside the home I would have loved this service because I was in sales and always needed cute and professional things. I definitely did not have the time to read fashion magazines and shop so this would have been something for sure I would have jumped on.
How Often Do I Get a Box?
So you set how often you want a box. Choose from every few weeks or every other month or exact dates that work with your schedule.
What if I Hate What I Get?
You will get a return envelope in your box and you return anything you don’t want. The envelope is pre-paid so you stuff the items inside and then drop it off in a mailbox. Log into your account first and you click a few buttons and tell them what you DIDN’T LIKE so they know for next time.
How Much Does it Cost?
You will pay $20 for the styling fee for them to pick stuff out for you. If you like the items in your box the styling fee is applied toward that item. The prices of the items are listed clearly based on the price point you set up in your profile so you log in and pay for what you want to keep and then return what you don’t. If you keep nothing from a box, you are out your $20.
BUT if you love everything and keep all 5 items you receive, you will get $75 off your box. So a super good discount if you do like it all.
My Experience
My friends that mentioned the service said the first box or two might not be great because they will not be as familiar with what you like. After the first few though, I have heard great things and I have seen the super, super cute things people have received that I also loved.
I have personally received one box so far- my box had one dress, one pair of jeans, a camisole and top, a long sleeve shirt and a necklace.
I didn’t really, really love anything in the box. The jeans were not a perfect fit and the top was a little too long. The dress I loved but it wasn’t quite what I need for upcoming parties and such.
This isn’t a great picture but here is what they sent me:
I liked this dress but I need something a little nicer for holiday parties. I absolutely love the color though and I would have never picked this off the rack so I am very glad to step out of my comfort zone.
The other things they sent:
I got the black and white striped shirt and the jeans and on the right the blue tunic top, the camisole and the jeans.
I would never ever have picked those items up but I did like them. The blue tunic top I would have paired with a white tank but the blue looks so pretty! That was a great little push outside of the box for me and I will pick up more colored camisoles in the future for sure.
And here is the blue dress I received. Simple and pretty but it has a really cute cut in the front that makes it just different enough. Isn’t that color gorgeous? Great alternative to boring black.
Each item comes with a little card set that shows you how to style the items a few different ways. I styled above using the cards as a guide with extra items from my closet so you can see what they had in mind for me.
What I Didn’t Like
I found the items I received a tiny expensive. I think the problem is the price points I said on my profile- so I will be lowering the price there and see what happens.
I also do not like that you only have 3 days to try on your items and return them. I didn’t realize that until I was researching this post actually so I better hurry up and return my items 😉
Bottom Line
So all in all, I am going to give Stitch Fix another shot. The items I got were close and a good fit for me and were items I wouldn’t normally have tried on.
If you want to get more ideas on what kinds of things Stitch Fix sends, you might take a look at the Instagram account here.
If you do try the service and decide you like it, you can log into your account and get a personal referral link. If you have any friends you want to recommend the service to and they use your link to order, you will get a $25 credit toward your next box. So pretty cool if you do like the service.
If you want to sign up for Stitch Fix and give it a shot, you can get more details here.
Hi- I would like to request the blue dress sent to you from stitch fix. Do you remember the brand or style of the dress? Thanks in advance.
Hi GT–
I don’t remember anything about it unfortunately. I did email Stitch Fix though to ask them if I can get the specifics and I will let you know. I can’t find anything under my account about prior shipments. It was a pretty dress though and super comfortable 🙂
