Are you ready for summer? I certainly am and I thought I’d post an easy sugar scrub recipe that is perfect for the warmer weather.
I wanted something bright and fresh and clean and immediately thought of Grapefruit. I decided to add some mint too because it is so refreshing and adds an extra little zip to citrus. Plus Peppermint is my jam– I find it so uplifting and it makes me immediately feel happier- just a little goes a long way.
So here is a very simple Grapefruit and Mint sugar scrub recipe. I like a scrubby- scrub (as opposed to one that is super soft)- especially for Spring and Summer when I am outdoors a lot and want a nice exfoliator so my skin stays soft.
This recipe calls for raw sugar. It is pretty reasonably priced and I like it for a sugar scrub. The downside is that it will make your scrub slightly brown- so if you want a bright pink color for your scrub you might decrease the raw sugar significantly. If you want something more gentle and soft, you can certainly omit the raw sugar and use white sugar instead for the entire recipe.
Here is the recipe:
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup raw sugar
5 tablespoons unrefined, organic coconut oil*
20 drops Grapefruit Essential Oil
3 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
Zest of one Grapefruit (optional)
I like to add the coconut oil in tablespoons because it makes it very easy to control the consistency of the scrub. This is about 1/3 cup of oil and I prefer to melt it before adding it to the sugar. That makes it very easy to stir.
Please note that coconut oil will change consistency according to the temperature. In warmer weather it will melt and in cooler weather it will harden. Your sugar scrub will also vary according to the time of year it is made. In cold months I notice the scrub will harden just a little bit. If that bothers you, you can always add a bit of almond oil or extra virgin olive oil to your scrub for a looser/wet consistency.
One last little tip is that when you first start using coconut oil it can feel a tiny bit greasy. It is SO good for your skin and super moisturizing. I don’t mind it at all for these sugar scrubs.
The Grapefruit essential oil has a somewhat mild scent so you may want to add more or less drops depending on your preference. I decided to use the zest of the grapefruit and added about 2 tablespoons to my scrub. That really makes the fragrance pop! I wish you could smell this jar because it smells so bright and zippy. Really fresh and a perfect way to start your day off.

And here are some notes about what I used:
I used Young Living Grapefruit and Peppermint oils. I recommend pure therapeutic grade oils and this is a great one. (Read about these oils here).
I like Spectrum or Nutiva Organic, Unrefined Coconut Oil. You can get it for about $6-8 a jar at many stores or grab from Amazon here.
A microplane is an awesome investment and I use mine frequently- you can get one from Amazon here or in the kitchen section at Target.
