Here is another super simple and easy recipe to make a homemade air freshener spray. Many air freshener sprays you can purchase at the store contain a lot of harmful chemicals. I try to stay away from them as much as I can so we aren’t breathing in things that are bad for us.
I have seen (and even tried) recipes in the past for homemade Febreze using fabric softener but fabric softener can actually be incredibly toxic (depending on the brand you purchase). It can also have an odd smell and a heaviness that isn’t totally pleasant. So it might not be a great idea to spritz that around the house- especially if you have small children. With this recipe, you don’t have to be concerned about what you are inhaling and you will get a much lighter fragrance that is safe to breathe in.
Here is the easy recipe but note you can totally modify this to suit your own fragrance preferences. I have a few suggestions at the bottom of the post for variations in fragrance depending on where you’d like to use this spray.
- 2 teaspoons witch hazel or vodka or white vinegar
- 20-30 drops of essential oils of your choice (I used 9 drops Young Living Peppermint and 20 drops Orange)
- 2oz water (distilled if possible)
You simply mix the essential oils and witch hazel or vodka and then pour it into a spritzing bottle. Next add the water and shake well. Spritz away!
With essential oils it is best to use high quality plastic or glass spray bottles (pick them up here).
This will give you a lighter scent in your home- if you prefer a stronger scent just add more drops of essential oil to your bottle. I like to make a smaller amount (this 2oz size is perfect) so that I can change the fragrance frequently.
The witch hazel is what I used and that scent is strong so just give your spray a little while for the ingredients to mix together and I found the witch hazel aroma went away after a few hours.
The fragrance that I made most recently is Orange and Peppermint which smells lovely- especially in the kitchen. The peppermint is my favorite and the orange can be uplifting and refreshing. I keep this one on my desk but it is perfect in the bathroom and kitchen as well.
If you want a spray for your bedroom, this lavender linen spray is fantastic or you might try Ylang Ylang, Joy, Cederwood, Peace and Calming- all of these have wonderful scents for bedtime.
I like to use purification in my daughter’s room when it needs a little freshening up or when I am deep cleaning. That is also great to spray in the kitchen, closets, the car etc… I also like to use Thieves in the spray when we are feeling a little under the weather or the weather is terrible– or lemon and lime would be a great combo for Spring Cleaning.
So that is it– your yummy homemade air freshener spray! Shake a few times before each use.
