I have a delicious recipe for easy Crock Pot hot chocolate. This is a great recipe to save for entertaining this holiday season or to start before dinner and the family can enjoy really delicious hot chocolate as dessert. Perfect for movie night!
I have tried crock pot hot chocolate recipes in the past and have always been disappointed. I made it once for family movie night at home and the recipe was terrible. It was not creamy and chocolately and just not soul warming like you want from hot chocolate.
The next recipe I tried had been called “Best Ever Crock Pot Hot Chocolate” and had been raved about by the person that published the recipe. I made it for a little party we had last year for 6 year olds. Blech! It wound up being crazy sweet and sticky and just not good at all. When 6 year olds find something too sweet you know you are in trouble.
Well this year I decided to give it one last shot as we were hosting the little Girl Scout troop over to assemble Operation Christmas Child boxes. I wanted to do a hot chocolate bar and decided to give one last recipe a shot.
I am so glad I did! This hot chocolate was so easy and fast to pop in the slow cooker and then it turned out to be absolutely delicious. Rich, creamy, not too sweet and the girls literally drank every last drop. I will absolutely make this again and again and wanted to share the recipe with you to enjoy as well.
- Sweetened Condensed Milk- 14oz
- ½ cup baking cocoa (I used Ghirardelli)
- 2 teaspoon vanilla
- 7 cups milk
- Mix all ingredients in crock and turn on high for 2 hours.
.
You might want to taste about halfway through cooking and see if this is too rich for you. If it is, you can add another 1/2 cup of milk.
I used 2% milk but whole milk should be fine as well.
This recipe comes from Gooseberry Patch Fall Favorites– their recipe calls for hot water and I substituted milk for a creamier hot chocolate.
If you decide to try this one, come back and let me know what you think!

Hi Charlene,
Do you think soymilk could be used instead of regular milk?
Thanks!
Hmm.. Sara I don’t use soymilk I occasionally use almond milk. Isn’t soymilk fairly thick? Can you try a small glass of soymilk hot chocolate and see if it is good? I would think you could do that swap but since I don’t drink soy milk myself I am not completely sure. I am concerned it might be too rich with this recipe and if so just cut way back on the condensed milk. The original recipe actually calls for no milk and hot water so that is another option.
Is the cocoa powder unsweetened?
Rose, the one I used is unsweetened. I like the yellow container- Nestle Tollhouse I think? or Ghirardelli is awesome in a pouch.
Hi! This looks great! I’m hoping to do this for my daughter’s Frozen themed birthday party this weekend. I’ll have about 30 people (16 – 4yr olds!) so I think I’ll need to double or triple the recipe! Have you ever done that? Will I need to cook it longer do you think? I have a 6qt slow cooker. Hmm…any advice is welcome!
Hi Carrie– hmmm… I have not doubled it. I would make it 3 hrs before the party. Then you have a win win because you can cool it a bit if it is too hot or you can crank it up an extra hour if it is too cold. I find children like luke-warm chocolate not hot chocolate so if it isn’t super hot they will still like it :). This recipe gives you hot chocolate- like from a coffee house hot. I would actually cook it on high for an hour for 4 year olds so it is just barely warm unless you really do want it super hot. Also if it too hot or too sweet you can just cut it with milk. They won’t know 🙂
Hi Charlene, we just did a trial run tonight – YUM! I think you’re right and 3 hours should work for a double batch. Thanks so much! So glad I found your blog!
Oh I am so glad to hear it 🙂
It was really sweet and rich, but yummy!! I used Hersey’s baking cocoa, but I also used chocolate milk instead of white! (It’s my favorite way to make hot coco!
