Target has made a few changes to the Target coupon policy. The changes that I can see include:
- Limit of 4 identical coupons per household, per day (unless otherwise noted on coupon).
- Returns of items purchased using Manufacturer Coupons may receive coupon value returned in the form of a Target GiftCard.
Target stores coupon policy
Manufacturer and Target Coupons:
•Target accepts one Manufacturer Coupon and one Target Coupon for the same item (unless prohibited by either coupon).
•We reserve the right to accept, refuse, or limit the use of any coupon.
•Limit of 4 identical coupons per household, per day (unless otherwise noted on coupon).
•All valid coupons should be presented to the cashier during checkout.
•Item purchased must match the coupon description (brand, size, quantity, color, flavor, etc.).
•Coupon amount may be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied.
•We can’t give cash back if the face value of a coupon is greater than the purchase value of the item.
•All applicable sales taxes are paid by the guest at the full value of the item.
•These guidelines apply to all coupons accepted at Target (Color Checkout Coupons, Internet Coupons, •Mobile Coupons, Mailed Coupons, Coupons from Newspapers and Magazines, etc.).
Internet (Print-at-Home) Coupons:
•We gladly accept valid internet coupons that contain a clear and scannable bar code.
•We do not accept internet coupons for free items with no purchase requirements.

•Guests can receive Target Mobile Coupons by signing up for Text Alerts at Target.com/mobile or by texting COUPONS to 827438 (TARGET).
•Message and data rates may apply. See site for full details.

Buy One Get One Free Coupons (BOGO):
•BOGO coupons cannot be combined (i.e. you cannot use two BOGO coupons on two items and get both for free). Unless stated otherwise on the coupon, the use of one Buy One Get One Free coupon requires that two of the valid items are presented at checkout of which one item will be charged to the guest and the 2nd item will be discounted by its full retail price.
•A second cents-off coupon of the same type cannot be redeemed towards the purchase price of the first item.
•If a Target BOGO coupon is used, one additional manufacturer coupon may be used on the first item.

I’m curious about this, as I had a problem with coupons at Target last week. I had 2 of the 15% of kids clothing coupons. I bought 2 pairs of jeans for my daughter, and when the cashier scanned the coupons, the register said “no items in order.” The cashier could see that I had purchased the jeans, and tried to override the computer. It wouldn’t let him. Another cashier walked over and explained that Target coupons are ONE PER GUEST. I asked to see a manager. She said the same thing – ONE PER GUEST, and they couldn’t override it. I explained that neither of my coupons had been accepted, and, that I didn’t think that it meant that each guest could only use one coupon per trip, but one coupon per item. She did manually enter one of my coupons, but refused on the second. Told me I could come back and use it tomorrow.

I’m kinda surprised about the manufacturer coupon refund policy. So….If I buy one of those FoodSaver machines and use a $10.00 off coupon, then return the item, they will give me a $10.00 Target gift card in replace of my coupon? I feel like that policy will start to be abused by people just wanting to turn their coupons into cash/credit.
I mean, am I looking at that policy change correctly?
Charlene says
Christine,
My guess is that people were buying things and getting cash back and now Target is trying to slow that down by offering credit instead.
That was how I looked at it. Terrible if I am right.

I am so glad that they changed this policy, with a family of 6 what are the chances that I would buy just 1 thing and use 1 coupon at a time? This change must have been a result of my complaint to corporate! (LOL)

So I’m confused by this because it says a limit of 4 like Target coupons (unless otherwise stated on the coupon) per household, per day. Since all Target coupons state “One per guest”, will this wording override the policy? I don’t understand why they don’t just change the wording on the coupons to coincide with the new policy? Or am I missing something here? Thanks!
Charlene says
Carli,
I think the limit of 4 on store coupons is if the coupon does not have a limit already imposed. I don’t think it overrides the limit on almost all the Target coupons of 1. It is a contradiction though and you wonder who writes these policies ;). I think the real takeaway is the limit of 4 manufacturer coupons. That is probably the big change for most people.

If you look on the target coupons they say one coupon or offer per guest. I tried using 2 target coupons last week and they stopped me( which they never had before). The cashier told me that they just had a meeting about the new coupon policy.
Charlene says
Virginia, that is right. We just talked about that. I don’t think the 4 limit overrides the one limit on the coupons. I think that limit of 4 is only for Target coupons that do not already have a limit on them.

Holy Moly is this is this causing controversy! At another blog I look at there were over 80 comments about this. People are MAD! Personally, I think it is kinda good because now people can’t go in and clear the shelves of soap (or whatever). It will hopefully make it a bit better for those of us who don’t show up at Target at 8am on Sunday to shop. As for the part about the right to refuse coupons, well, I hope this doesn’t become an issue. In general, I have a pretty good Target, so I don’t think this is be a big deal for me.
Charlene says
Michelle,
I rarely get worked up about things ;). I try to encourage people to just roll with it too. Yeah it is a bummer if you have a fistful of coupons but the bright side, like you said, is maybe the shelves won’t be empty on all the hottest deals. I still like Target and I get all sorts of hot deals there so it is what it is. I have a feeling we will see all stores starting to go with this 4 coupon limit before too long.
Shannon says
This may seem like a dumb question, but I have a Target coupon for $1/2 ziploc Holiday food storage items. I also have a mfr coupon for $1/2 ziploc-this coupon states “canot be combined with any other coupon”. So, I can’t stack these two then?
Thanks for your response:)
Charlene says
Yes Shannon you can. Coupons will almost always have that verbiage and basically it means you can’t buy a $3 Ziploc box and use (3) $1 off manufacturer coupons to get it free. You can absolutely use a manufacturer coupon and a store coupon together.
