I have mentioned the Kindle with Special Offers a few times. It is a discounted version of the Kindle because these have “sponsored screensavers” (aka commericals) that come up when you are not reading on your device. Amazon has an example of the screensaver pictured above.
The screensavers are not supposed to be intrusive to your reading at all and apparently it also comes with special offers. The offers can be anything from coupons to online coupon codes etc…
Well I wanted to tell you the price dropped a bit on these Kindles and also tell you that reader Kathleen said she bought one of these and the first special offer she received was a $25 off $50 purchase in the Amazon Baby Store! (Whoot!)
So you might actually get something great from the device.
Anyway, they went down a little in price and now the 3G with Wi Fi Kindle is $139. The regular Kindle without the special offers (exactly the same but no commercials is $50 more at $189.)
You can still get the Kindle without 3G and WiFi for $114 (special offers) or $139.
*Does anyone else have one of the Special Offers Kindles that can comment about have intrusive the advertisements are?

I have the kindle that was 114. The ads don’t bother anything, actually I have noticed some good deals on amazon BECAUSE of the ads. Also, I do have wifi, I post finished books online, and purchase books from the kindle, OR internet, but its so much easier from the kindle. (you can just shop amazon directly from the device.) No complaints so far. Best 114 I have spent. 🙂

I have the $114 Kindle and the special offers are great. I got one today that was for a $1 Kindle book. They had some popular books on there like The Hunger Games Series, Fablehaven Series, The Percy Jackson books, etc… great deal. They also had a deal of 50% off the lighted Kindle case (which is awesome).

I have the $114 version. Love it! I’ve gotten deals like a $20 gift card to Amazon for $10 and also the baby deal mentioned earlier. ($25 off a $50 purchase.) The ads don’t bother me a bit. The screen saver is only up when you’re not using the Kindle, and if you want to see all the special offers available, you actually have to go in and click that for yourself. So glad I went with the cheaper version!

Is this a temporary price drop?

I too have the 114 Kindle and the ads have never bothered me at all. Yes, you still have the WiFi with it and the ads are more like a screensaver. Not even there when you are reading so much so that I’ve never actually noticed any of them but now I think I better start paying attention to them a little more!!!

I have the 114.00 kindle and I love it. I never notice the ads. It is just like a screen saver on your computer, when you go to use your computer the screen saver pops off and you don’t see it again until you turn it off. No bother at all.

I want a kindle, but mostly so that I can read in bed and not bother hubby. Are the 114 ones backlit (able to be read in a drk rm)?
Sarah says
NO the Kindle’s are not backlit.
Maggie says
They are purposely not backlit because that causes greater eye strain. They look exactly like the ink on a real book. Buy the case with the pop up light. It is powered by your Kindle. I love it and read in bed every night.

I’m confused. Everyone is talking about having a 114 Kindle with ads/offers but the post above is talking about a 139 Kindle with ads. Is the difference that 114 only has WiFi and the 139 has 3G? I was following the part about special offers/screensaver but just a little confused about the other…
Maggie says
The $114 is wi-fi only. The $139 Kindle is 3G and Wifi or for $139 you can get the wi-fi only without the ads. Not sure why you would do that though. The ads are money saving deals. 🙂
Katie says
Thanks for the clarification. That’s what I thought but I just wanted to be totally clear 🙂 I’m all about deals, if I finally pull the trigger on the Kindle I will go with the ads one, didn’t even know it was an option!
Erin says
The ads are actually really good. I got a “spend $10 get a $25 gift card” and a spend $10 in books, get $10 in books free. It’s worth it. I got the amazon baby one too!
Charlene says
Personally, I am gunshy about ads in general but if I was to buy a Kindle I would get this one. It sounds better with the ads 🙂

I had an offer tonight for a $1 book….I haven’t had a chance to view the list of books included, but the details say it includes “Water for Elephants”.
Another reader commented to purchase the Kindle cover with light, my suggestion would be to wait on that purchase. While it might seem enticing to just buy them at the same time, the first offer on my Kindle was a Kindle cover with light for 50% off.
Jessica says
And I’m totally bummed I haven’t had the Amazon gift card offer that reader Amy commented about above!!

I have the Kindle that was featured at Best Buy for $114 and got an on the spot $15 Best Buy gift card. The ads have not bothered me thus far and I’ve not paid much attention to them. However after reading here, I will definately pay attention!!!! The ads only appear when the device has been inactive for a lengthy period of time. This is the best $99 I’ve ever spent. Also, there are so many tutorials on making a carrying case for your Kindle online, no reason to buy a pricey one. However, the lighted cases are VERY nice!!!
Kathy says
I have the $114 Kindle and love it. Because of all the ads, I’ve downloaded 47 books and 7 games and have yet to pay a dime for them. I just downloaded the ‘Crying Games’ series and got them all free. I started with getting the Amazon card w/a 25.00 gift card and have used every ad giving a $1.00 book or buy one book and get a $10.00 gift card, also a buy one for $5.00 and get one free. So with that initial $25.00 gift card, I’m making it stretch far! The ads don’t bother me at all and I see I missed the lighted book cover for half off. I should have been paying more attention because I want that!
