Well let me start by saying I find this incredibly sad. I remember the good old days when I had free time and I could wander around in a library or bookstore for hours.
It looks like too many of us might have run out of free time because Borders Bookstores will be closing stores down as early as Friday of this week!
Borders will have liquidation sales in some locations through September so you might keep an eye on your store and see what you find. ย If you do spot a sale at your local Borders remember children’s books in particular are wonderful gifts and donations during the holidays!

Ours closed about 6 months ago. Sad indeed. I did score tons of kids’ books and stashed them away from birthdays, showers, etc. I got 3 enormous bags of books for $25 and still have plenty left for gifts.

I am saddened by this news.

It is really sad isn’t it ๐ Makes me want to rent You’ve Got Mail.

will it affect the website too? I would imagine so…
Joy says
Ours closed 6 months ago, too.
Love the new look of the blog! ๐

aww that’s sad. two out of three stores that wer close to me closed a couple months ago. i guess it’s time for the last one to close too.
Julie says
That stinks. There are only a few Borders in Maine but it is the only big bookstore we have. In fact, I don’t know of any other bookstores we have other than specialty ones. Now I’m depressed. ๐
Stevie Nanstad says
I don’t think it is a lack of free time..it is because everything is Electronic now. :-/
Jenna says
The one I used to visit went out of business at least 18 months ago, maybe a little longer. It was very sad.

Our Borders (Pasadena, CA) closed down several months ago, and we got an AMAZING deal on bookshelves. Three bookshelves that almost touch our ceiling for $99 (we didn’t *need* the 3rd, but my husband bought 2 for $96, and the next day his friend got 3 for $99. So my husband asked if he could have a 3rd for $3 ๐ ) They are in great condition and will be a great home for the zillions of books my husband has purchased during the past 3 years of seminary.
Charlene says
Yes obviously Stevie. I think people want something fast now- I know I do. That is the fast and easy solution.
Elizabeth says
Our local Borders closed about 6 months ago. The discount was only 40 percent for what seemed like forever. I never saw it go below that, but maybe it did in the last few days for some lucky people. I don’t care to mourn the closure of a big national discount retailer: save your tears for the small, local bookstores that have been biting the dust for 10 years now … quietly, without much notice from anyone.

Ours closed in April ๐

I know for me personally its the memories behind it. Going with my mom and spending hours finding the perfect book I couldnt wait to put down. We did it all the time. Same with Blockbuster and movies nights when I was a kid growing up, now thats gone too. Its just sad how things change so quickly.
Andrea says
Its sad, I blame Amazon for the demise of the book stores. Its a shame, our kids will miss out on the bookstore experience.
Alicja says
I do agree with you there, Elizabeth, but it’s sad to see *any* bookstore close. Especially with the seemingly recent trend of kids only reading text messages and Seventeen magazine as opposed to books. I was actually talking to my husband about this back when they closed; that hopefully this will free up some business for the now-niche local bookstores we have in town.
Courtney says
I’m really upset about this. I love my Borders. It is so much nicer for browsing and sitting in the cafe than Barnes & Noble. I am a big book lover and don’t have much interest in e-readers. I stare at a computer screen all day – why would I want to read my books that way? I’m going to buy as many of the classics as I can when they go on sale. *Sigh*
Sam says
I agree that it is sad to see that borders is going out of business, mine was out of business a few yrs back. I see that many people say that children will miss out on the book store. A good alternative that I have done with my kids is to bring them to the library, libraries are so different than it used to be. Children get to play on computers, browse books for as long as they want, borrow dvds etc. I wish people would use the library more often instead of buying books.
Laura says
This sale won’t be like the other store closing sales that Border’s has had in the past. They have cancelled their blowout sales and sold the inventory to a liquidator. Often times the liquidator companies will mark the original price much higher then say it is 50% off, really making it a bad deal. So many of us (me included) play into the thought of “if it is 50% or 75% off it must be a great deal” I’m not saying that there won’t be great deals but just make sure the final price is a great one and ignore the %off’s.

I was so sad when our Borders closed back in April. It was my favorite place to go spend an hour or two, but I was more upset for the employees. Let’s keep all those soon-to-be-unemployed book lovers in our prayers.

So sad. I love walking over to Borders on my breaks. ๐ No papyrus anymore, now no borders. ๐ I don’t want to have to drive over to the Galleria to BN! *cries*

I was saddened to hear this on the news last night. I have a lot of good memories linked to Borders. It’s so sad…it’s just the sign of changing times, you know. Speaking for just my book-loving family, the hubby has been buying either e-books or from used bookstores while I have been borrowing from the library or downloading free e-books. Yeah, you can tell which one is the more frugal one ๐
Ericka says
Ours closed in a big mall around us, today saw they took the sign down outside for it finally.
I take my kids to the library, they can take out all the books they want for 3 weeks, then we can go back and get a new stack when they are finished with the ones we got.
