If you have turned on the TV at all the past few days, you may be aware of the devestation from the recent Tornados in MO and KS over the weekend. This was the deadliest tornado in over 6 decades in the United States.
It looks like the death toll from those storms is at 100 right now and there are thousands and thousands of people in need of the basics.
Here are a few ways that you can donate items you might have on hand or money you might be able to spare:
- Volunteer: If you want to physically help and volunteer, you can call 800-427-4626. If you have any medical training, head to ShowMeResponse.org
- Help with Long Term Relief: Often times, after storms such as these, the donations stop. You can help with the ongoing efforts by checking out Missouri Interfaith Disaster Response Organization.
- Heart of Missouri United Way: Donate $10 instantly by texting “JOPLIN” to 864833. Red Cross: You can make a cash donation to the Red Cross to help victims on both sides of the state line by heading to their site and donating. You can also text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate.
- Heart to Heart International: This is a company based out of Olathe, KS. You can donate online atwww.hearttoheart.org , calling 913-764-5200, or mailing it to 401 S. Clairborne, Suite 302, Olathe, KS 66062. You can also sign up to volunteer if you have medical training — call 913-764-5200 or email [email protected]. You can also put together hygiene kits — get more information on Heart to Heart’s website at www.hearttoheart.org.
- Humane Society: You can make a donation to help the animals affected by the storm by heading to www.hsmo.org .
- Missouri Mavericks: The Missouri Mavericks are collecting bottled water, clothing, toiletries and other donations at their team store at the Independence Event Center until 6 p.m. Monday, May 23.
- Northland Auto Body and Tow: They are taking donations for blankets, bottled water, toiletries, canned goods, radios, tarps, flashlights, batteries and clothing to be dropped off at 64th and Chattham. For more information call 816-741-2588.
Does anyone else have any other suggestions on what people can do to help out?
Thanks to Penny Pinchin Mom for this wonderful list of ways we can all pull together to help!
PS: This is an image from Yahoo! News of a Home Depot store that was leveled in the storm.

We live in Joplin, MO & I keep hearing of many ways to send supplies & alot of places are taking the donations & getting them ready to send to us. The pictures on TV are nothing compared to this in person. All of my family is safe but we live by the hospital so our house got some damage & I was at work in St. John’s when it hit. So we are working on cleaning up & getting the kids (9 & 5 months) things out along with the clothes. I just want to say THANK YOU to everyone that is helping.

Thanks so much!! I live in Joplin and everything is needed. Everyone has been so generous. All that stockpiled toothpaste, shampoo, etc. has come in very handy to donate. So glad that I had it.

This is so heartbreaking. We were literally just in Joplin visiting family a couple of weeks ago. And unfortunately, we had some family affected by this. They lost their one family vehicle and the husband barely made it out of a theater that was completely flattened. There were a few people right next to him that died right then and there. Thank the Lord their home was okay. But, now they need to replace all of their kids’ carseats and find a new car.
