CLOSED. Giveaway: $50 Gift Card to Safeway Family Stores

08/03/2010 By Charlene

This post may contain affiliate links, please see my disclosure policy.

The winner was Tami (tamtam…)!!! Don’t worry I have another one coming soon so you have another shot to win!

If you shop at any of the Safeway Family stores- you might be interested in the grocery delivery service they provide.

I got the chance to check out the service last week and I will share my experience.  You can also enter to win a $50 gift card to check out the service for yourself!

I have to say I really love this idea.  I mean honestly- the time it takes to get to the store, sort your coupons, plan your trip, get everything and bring it home- not fun for anyone.  If you have to take the kids along as well it can be downright painful sometimes.

So I already posted my Safeway.com purchases- my total was almost exactly $40 and I got the following items:

::16lbs boneless, skinless chicken
::3.6 lbs Pork Sirloin
::3.5lbs Grapes
::4 Hormel Chilli
::1 Frozen Spinach
::1 Organic Iced Tea

So not too bad! I placed my order around 11pm and I was able to select a time for the very next day to have it delivered! They offered 2 hour windows and the driver arrived about 20 minutes into my window. He unloaded everything- put it right in my kitchen and was gone in about 5 minutes.

PROS: I found the quality of the produce and meat they gave me excellent. All my items arrived just as I ordered and they were at the correct temperatures.
I think this service is spectacularly helpful on weeks when you just can’t do it all. I would absolutely use this service again- especially when Safeway has great prices on meats and produce.  One other issue is that it is extremely hot here.  So if I want to stock up on produce and meat or frozen goods I have to really hurry home.  The Safeway trucks will deliver everything perfectly fresh for you.

CONS: I did find a few cons to the service. The most obvious is that you can’t use coupons. They do frequently offer promo codes and that is very helpful. In my case- I paid $7.96 per bag of chicken. I could have used a $1 off coupon in store to make each bag $6.96 (or $1.74/lb). I used a promo code instead for $10/50 which I believe more than offset the difference. I found many items were more expensive online than in store-for example the pork was $2.49 online and in store it is $1.99.  If you factor the extra $1.50 I spent on pork and the (4) $1 coupons I did not use for the chicken- I still came out way ahead by using the promo code.   You do need to spend $50 to get free delivery- otherwise it is pretty expensive. The last issue I had, was that I would have loved to do my order on my phone- I think an app to enable ordering from your phone would make it even more convenient.

****************

So that was my experience with Safeway delivery!  It looks like Safeway, Vons and Genuardis all offer this delivery service.  To check it out for yourself:

::Just head over to Safeway, Vons or Genuardis and select Grocery Delivery on the left side

::Enter your zip code to determine if they deliver to your specific area
::You can enter specific items or shop by aisle
:: You need to spend $50 for free delivery and you can only get the free delivery on your first order.  I believe you need to spend $150 for subsequent orders or pay the service charge.
::Enter promo code: EASY7 for free delivery
::Then enter promo code: FRUGAL for $7 off your first order.  (Once you register they will send you other offers.  That is how I got the $10 off code.)

And now the best part! I have one gift card for a lucky reader! This card can be used in store or online and is for any of the family of stores.

You get 4 chances to enter and I will randomly select a winner on Sunday at 5pm PST. Please be sure to leave a separate comment for each entry- if you are reading this from a newsletter or reader just CLICK HERE to enter.

1. Let me know if you have used the delivery service and what your thoughts are about it? Are you interested in checking it out?
2. Subscribe to my newsletter or let me know you do!
3. Like me on Facebook or let me know you do!
4. Follow me on Twitter or let me know you do!

So that is it! Due to time constraints I can not accept any entries via email, twitter, or Facebook.

GOOD LUCK!

*Disclosure: Safeway provided me with a gift card to check out the delivery service and a gift card for you guys. Thanks Safeway!

    your post reminded me I haven’t used my 10 off coupon…as safeway is on my husbands way home from work he frequently drops in and picks up what I need…but really I should give this a try for my next shopping.

    I’ve looked @ the pricing compared to the store, sometimes its cheaper but its a little easier since when I do go, I hate dragging stuff to the car to the house, but i figure its good excercise! there is the free shipping option on your 1st order so I am not sure how that figures into the cost…I do have $5 off a purchase off a $50 purchase……

    I have never used the delivery service myself, and in general I don’t think I would like it. I prefer to pick out my own items so I can make sure to get the freshest items with the best expiration date. I could see it coming in handy in certain situations though, like when I have my second baby in a few weeks.

    I’d love this service, unfortunately, I don’t think Randalls has this service where I live. But with a 6 yr old, a 4 yr old and a 1 yr old, it sure could come in handy!

    Now that I work from home, my schedule is a lot more flexible, so I do most of my own shopping unless it’s a really busy week for me.

    Their service is great. I used to use it every week and have the groceries delivered to my work. I’d schedule delivery between 6-8 PM and as soon as the groceries arrived, I’d go home.

    The biggest challenge I had was learning how to order the right amount of produce. It’s hard to order fruits and vegetables by the pound when you have no idea how many pieces are in a pound. One time, I thought I was ordering 3 heads of garlic and ended up with 3 lbs of garlic…

    For the most part, everything I ordered was in stock. On the few items they did substitute, usually, they gave a more expensive product for the same price.

    I think they should allow drivers to accept tips. I’ve had some incredibly helpful, courteous people deliver my groceries. When I was on crutches, they even offered to put everything away for me.

    I’ve also used them to send groceries to a family member who was unemployed. I entered the wrong house # on the order and it was very easy to fix and they also complied with my request not to give my brother the receipt, since I didn’t want him to know how much I had spent.

    I haven’t used the service with any coupons attached to my Safeway card, but I can’t think of any reason why it wouldn’t work.

    I have never used the delivery service. I have to pick out the product and meat I’m getting. Guess I could use it for canned/boxed foods that are consistent.
