Newspaper Subscriptions (as low as $.19/paper) CA, UT, ID, NV Only

07/12/2011

Share

Well I am finally getting all the details ready for those of you looking for newspaper subscriptions. There are a handful of newspapers that have private relationships with companies that sell the papers for them. They offer huge discounts to these companies so now the savings will be passed on to you!

I have 3 subscriptions to my local paper (Sacramento Bee). So if you are interested in really getting going with coupons, it is a great idea to score a few extra papers. I tend to be conservative so I just get 3 papers. If you have a larger family, you might want to get more. Typically the rule of thumb is one paper per person in your household but you can decide how much time and energy you have to dedicate to this.

To me, $.38 per paper is going to pay for itself very easily. If I had to pay $2.00 per issue I would really have to think much harder about how many papers I bought.

So I have a list below of seven different papers that offer serious discounts on subscriptions.

I am giving topline info below and then you can just click the name of the newspaper and see all the details as well as ordering instructions.

*****

UTAH RESIDENTS:

Salt Lake Tribune or Deseret Morning News- choose from up to 2 subscriptions per newspaper.  (So a total of 4 if you want both papers)

You pay $50 per subscription and get back a $6 gift card (per subscription) to Target, Smiths or Walmart.  This one is kind of expensive but it works out to $.85/issue after gift card.

The Standard Examiner- this is a monthly subscription, available to Box Elder, Weber, Morgan and Davis counties.

You need to contact Amy Thompson directly to get the breakdown on prices for The Standard Examiner.  The newspaper will not allow discounted prices to be published.

The Herald Journal- you pay monthly for this one.  There are three packages to choose from: Get 3 papers for $13.20/month (so $1.10 per paper) OR get 4 papers for $16.30 (so $1.02 per paper) OR 5 papers for $18/month (so $.90 per paper.)

IDAHO RESIDENTS:

Idaho State Journal- $17 for Sunday papers plus 1 daily paper- Mon-Fri (works out to .85 per Sunday paper.)

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS:

Orange County Register- if you are NOT already subscribed you pay $12 per year.  That is nuts!  The $12 price means you pay .23 per newspaper.  What a fantastic deal.  You can get up to 5 papers total.

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS:

Sacramento Bee- you get up to 5 subscriptions total to the Bee.   The price is $19.99 for 6 months so .77 per newspaper.

Fresno Bee- $28.64 for 52 weeks if you buy 1 or 2.  If you buy 3-5 additional copies, they are $20 per year each.  If you are a current subscriber you can get up to 4 more papers added on.

Modesto Bee- $32.99 for 52 weeks. You can order up to 5 per household- new or existing customers.

NEVADA RESIDENTS:

Las Vegas Review Journal- if you already subscribe you get up to 4 more papers at a price of $19.50 for 6 months (.75 per paper).  If you do not already subscribe the first paper is $40.50 for 6 months (or $1.55/issue) and each additional subscription is $19.50.

*Please note, I do not work for this company and am only passing along the information.  If you have any questions about any of it just give our liaison, Amy Thompson a call at 562-507-1605 and she will be happy to help you.

I already have my papers but I am planning to order extra subscriptions myself so I can keep running the insert giveaways each week!

The Placer Country Herald is $13 for the first year so only $.25 a paper.

Melissa July 12, 2011 at 1:30 PM

Do you know of any good newspaper subscription deals in central california?? Thanks in advance! Also, I love your blog!!

Amy July 12, 2011 at 1:38 PM

I live in the San Francisco bay area and can’t seem to find a deal a subscription. I currently buy just one copy of the SF Chronicle (with better coupons) @ $3/piece. As you can imagine, this amounts to quite a bit of $$/year! Any suggestions?

Charlene July 12, 2011 at 1:48 PM

Amy, I don’t but there are a lot of Bay Area readers so I bet they have ideas for you. :) I have to say I am jealous of your Saturday paper- the Bee doesn’t offer the early ads. I sure would have a hard time paying $3/week though.

Charlene July 12, 2011 at 1:48 PM

Melissa, I am working on digging something up for Modesto/Lodi etc… As of right now just the papers listed are available.

Sheena July 12, 2011 at 2:06 PM

Do you know how I would be able to find out if there are any deals like this going on in Illinois?

Charlene July 12, 2011 at 2:06 PM

Melissa,

I just spoke with this company and they are working on the Modesto Bee and there is a Fresno one and Riverside and San Diego coming up soon.

karen July 12, 2011 at 2:06 PM

how about FL ?(southern)

Rachael Edwards July 12, 2011 at 2:09 PM

Well I get Stockton Record Paper for $0.88 on Sundays thru the subscription. You pay $24 for 6 months.

Charlene July 12, 2011 at 2:16 PM

Karen which paper? Are you in Miami by chance?

Melissa P. July 12, 2011 at 2:31 PM

Do you know if I can get the paper mailed to me from a different area? I am in NM, could I get a CA paper? Am I totally crazy for thinking that would get me different coupons from the coupons I get in my area?

Charlene July 12, 2011 at 2:48 PM

Melissa, you need to live in the area to get the newspaper subscription. Good thought though :)

Melissa July 12, 2011 at 3:05 PM

I’m in fresno so that would be awesome! Thanks!

Lisa G. July 12, 2011 at 3:37 PM

the Sac Bee doesn’t offer mail subscriptions at this rate. Too bad.
@Amy, I was researching SF Chron discounts and came across a Sunday only for $2/week, which isn’t great but it’s better than $3. I can’t remember which one it was but you can do an internet search and you should be able to find it. I’m on the fence about getting it myself. It has slightly different coupons than the SJ Merc.

Amy July 12, 2011 at 3:50 PM

@Lisa G. – Thanks for the info! I’ve considered getting the SJ Mercury in lieu of the SF Chronicle myself after discovering the very slim coupon inserts in the Fremont Agrus, Daily Review and Oakland Tribune.

Nat July 12, 2011 at 3:51 PM

Bummer, Im in L.A and neither Orange or Sacramento will work for me I guess. I currently get one copy of the LA times, but was thinking of adding another if there was a great deal like 0.19 cents Sunday copy!

karen July 12, 2011 at 4:10 PM

No, Im in Coral Springs. Miami is about 1 hour away from here. :)

Erin July 12, 2011 at 4:22 PM

done and done. Thanks for passing on the info!

Charlene July 12, 2011 at 4:49 PM

You guys, I found an old post from awhile back that had this:

If you happen to live in the Bay Area, reader Scott found two amazing deals for you:
Get a Year of the Contra Costa Times for $20! To get the offer just call: 877.875.8631 and ask for “$20 Sunday Only 52 week ADVO One Day Sale Special” this offer expires 8/25.

He also found a sweet deal on the San Francisco Chronicle- get an entire year of Thursday-Sunday papers for $19.95 or just Sunday papers for $18. You can check the deal out here.

https://www.subscriber-services.com/sfchron/ns/nssplash.asp?pid=45

The Chronicle deal is over now but I can tell you on the Bee one year they were a rip off and I just insisted on speaking to supervisors and finally got it down to $20/yr for 3 papers. It was a bit of a struggle. Maybe just call and ask for a supervisor and say you want x papers and what is the best they can do. You might try that coupon code for the Contra Costa Times too. You never know, they might accept it.

That post is a year old and embarrassingly has the same image in it :P

Delia July 12, 2011 at 5:40 PM

YEAH!! This made my day!! So excited to get more papers and not beg my sister to go get extras! Thanks so much for getting everyone yet another great deal.

Kristy July 12, 2011 at 5:59 PM

Okay….what about the St. Louis area???? When I first started doing coupons I could get a paper at the dollar store for $1. Then they quit selling them and I could buy them at Sam’s for $1.50. Now, my Sam’s quit selling them and I am paying $2 a paper!!!!! It’s killing me!!!!!

HELP!

Carol's Critter Corner July 13, 2011 at 7:47 PM

How long is the Sac Bee deal good for? Thanks Charlene.

Charlene July 13, 2011 at 8:07 PM

Carol, I don’t have an end date unless you want the ones with gift cards. Apparently that could be ending any time so I wouldn’t wait for those.

Mer Isafreak July 15, 2011 at 2:03 PM

I am wondering if the prices listed are for every day + additional Sunday papers, or just a Sunday paper subscription?

Charlene July 15, 2011 at 2:54 PM

Mer, you just need to click on whichever paper you want and it should tell you. If I click on the Sacramento Bee it says Sunday only papers for example. So the price would be for 52 papers a year on Sunday only.

sas July 17, 2011 at 9:40 AM

Thank You much. I just put my order in for the Sac Bee.

Apple September 27, 2011 at 2:15 AM

Received an promotion from San Francisco Chronicle, sign up here at $26 for 52 weeks of Sunday Chronicle ($0.50/week):

links.sfgate.com/ZLBP (case sensitive)

This link requires zip code entered to show the price rate. I tried several zip code around the bay area (Richmond–East Bay, San Francisco, San Jose–South Bay) and they all show the same price. Hope this could help someone who need it because the regular price of this Sunday is $3.00.

JJ September 28, 2011 at 6:59 PM

@Apple, me too got that in the mail i live in San Mateo Area, mede a comment before on thid blog I thinh :P
@Charlene, Why there is not anymore the little box to receive email updates by the Submit button, that was really useful so we know when somebody else comment or reply on the post :(

Charlene September 28, 2011 at 7:45 PM

JJ I told you before that people got snippy with me. They kept checking the box themselves and then raising holy heck that I was a spammer and stuff because I was sending them zillions of emails. :) I was getting horrible comments on Facebook and then these nasty emails. I take it off when I run giveaways now because even though I said in bold red words DON”T CHECK THE BOX! they would check the box and then post on Facebook that I was a spam site.

JJ September 28, 2011 at 8:22 PM

Yeah i remember i checked that box for accident in a give away and i got like 800 emails that day, lol
But seriuosly, it is kinda hard to dig into all the posts when we make a question or comment… i.e. I remember I ask you before why you removed the box, but i don’t remember on wich post i did… :(

Charlene September 28, 2011 at 9:15 PM

Yeah I answered before too. You know you should really subscribe to comments so you can keep track better JJ… oh wait.

Lisa September 29, 2011 at 1:47 AM

@Apple 7 & JJ- I live in the East Bay and also got the offer. I don’t see anything about how many subscriptions you can get at that price. Has anyone tried to get more than one subscription? If so, how did you do it? I checked the online option and there is no way to pick more than one subscription. I am going to get at least one because that is a great deal and the Chron has the best inserts in the area.

Apple October 20, 2011 at 3:48 AM

Lisa, maybe you can do multiple orders to your address? or use different address to get more than one subscription and then do “change address” later?

Courtney October 27, 2011 at 12:34 PM

Hi all,

I live in Oakland and I know that at the downtown farmers market on Fridays there are guys who stand out there and offer the Oakland Tribune and the SF Chronicle for $20 per year. Plus the last time I got it I received a coupon book. So keep an eye out for the farmers markets. I also noticed a guy on the weekends selling them at Safeway. He puts his little stand up in front of the store.

Love Coupons November 4, 2011 at 8:43 PM

Hi all,

Has anyone done the Sacramento Bee deal through the link attached? Just wanted to get some comfort that someone else has done it and it worked out ok. I don’t like that i’m giving my credit info via google doc or over the phone and that there is no way to contact this person other than a phone number.

Thanks!

Charlene November 4, 2011 at 8:59 PM

Coupons, I fully researched the company before I posted ;)

franki November 9, 2011 at 9:30 PM

We were at SF car show a couple years ago and found someone offering $52/yr for Sunday only. Wasn’t the best deal but has been worth it.
They did auto-renew and was very pleased that I wasn’t suddenly paying $3/wk. Went up to $60/yr.
Q’s so much better than my local Merc.-which is .91@ WAGs & can pay with Register Rewards. And the only way to get TV guide. neither Merc or Chron home delivery has TV guide.

If I had to pay $2+ for Sunday paper, I’d just use a clipserv

jackie wells December 1, 2011 at 5:09 AM

Is there a site that sells coupons that are in the California paper that people that do not live there that we can order online like the one in the Florida Area.

ZC January 13, 2012 at 3:05 AM

I live in the Sacramento area, and I get my sunday newspapers from the dollar store (99 cents only, Dollar Tree). Beats paying $2/paper though, but I do plan on getting a subscription delivered to my door instead. But like someone said above, the googledocs like does look kinda iffy though.

Sue February 6, 2012 at 11:01 PM

How come the OC paper link isn’t working?? That’s such an AMAZING DEAL. 23 cents a paper!!! Wow. I tried all of the links posted and the CA and Vegas ones don’t work any more, but the others do.

Charlene February 7, 2012 at 7:17 AM

Sue, I will check it out a little later today and see if I can get it corrected.

Angie February 13, 2012 at 9:33 PM

Is the Sac Bee deal of $19.99 for 26 weeks still valid? ( I looked at the Google Doc)

Charlene February 13, 2012 at 9:43 PM

Angie, it is $19.99 for 6 months. You might still be able to get $19.99 for a year but you would need to call the Bee directly and you might need a supervisor. ;) You can just say you saw an offer for $19.99 a year and wanted to know if it was still available.

Nicole February 28, 2012 at 11:15 AM

Angie, I just called the Sac Bee to renew my subscription and they offered me the $19.99 for 26 weeks.

Charlene February 28, 2012 at 11:32 AM

Nicole,

That is twice what it used to be. My subscription is 52 weeks for $19.99.

-Charlene

Claire February 29, 2012 at 11:16 PM

If I’m from Stockton, CA- can I get the Fresno or Modesto BEE Delivered?

Bonnie April 11, 2012 at 9:02 PM

I am in Central Florida and the two papers available to me with weekly coupons are the Orlando Sentinal @ $2.00 and the Floriday Today @ $3.00. Do you know of any deals with these papers?
