Here is this week’s Safeway trip. I had a terrible cashier this go around that didn’t scan half the coupons I gave him. I also bought several items on clearance and he didn’t adjust the price for any of them. So to keep it simple I will just post what I should have paid. Customer service was closed when I shopped, but I did call back and complained and now I have to go back to the store to get a refund. The amount I was overcharged was close to $20- so a huge amount on a fairly small trip.
Goldfish Crackers $1.50- used .75/1 from magazine and had .75 e-coupon= Free
7 cans Campbell Soup- $1 each- used (7) .55/1 peelies from the cans, had $1.50 e-coupon come off= $1.65 for all 7
2 S&W Black Beans $1= $2
Mission Tortillas .99- Used .55/1 coupon, had 2 .55 e-coupons come off= .66 overage
2 O Organics Soups on clearance $1.30 each= $2.59
2 Grands Biscuits $1 each= Used $1/2 coupon= $1
3 Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls $1 each= Used $1/2 coupon, used .35/1 peelie and had $1.60 in e-coupons= .05 for 3
Pillsbury Simply Cookies $2.50- used free item coupon (I think from Kraft First Taste)
Cream $1.99
2 Lucerne Cottage Cheese $1.79= $3.58
2 Lucerne Yogurt on clearance = $.90
6 packages Scotch Brite sponges 3pks $2.50 each- Used (3) $1/2 coupons= $12
Farmer John’s Sausage $1.25- used .75/1 coupon, and had (3) .75 e-coupons come off= 1.75 overage
Pork Chops $6.79
Bananas $1.50
Green Grapes $1.95
Red Grapes $2.16
2 Raisins .99 each= $1.98
10lb Potatoes $2.99
V-8 Soup on clearance $1.89- used $1 coupon= .89
Total should have been $42.61 but I should have had a $3 cat for Pillsbury and a $5 cat for Scotch Brite back. Of course the cat machine was blinking red lights so it was out of paper. My store is supposed to just give me a gift card instead which I will use next week.
The Scotch Brite sponges pushed me over budget this week but that is one thing that I never find deals on. Now we have plenty to last for several months and they worked out to .38 each which is a great price.

9 times out of 10 I have some sort of problem at Safeway and end up at customer service for a refund. I have to watch them like a hawk as they scan the coupons. Luckily customer service never gives me any problems. customer service admitted that it’s basically the cashiers not paying attention. It’s so annoying, especially with two babies.

ack! $20 overcharged? I would of been super grumpy! Those are the moments where I have to close my eyes and think happy thoughts 😉

There has been a lot of discussion in my area about Safeway changing their coupon policies. Their nationwide coupon policy changed and in some areas – Chicago supposedly being one. They have changed their registers to only allow for one coupon per item-including ecoupons. The policy specifically mentions ecoupons stacking being prohibited in Hawaii and the rumor mill (aka questions by couponers wanted users to Safeway corporate) is that this change is rolling out nationally. I don’t know if that was part of your problem – but be on the lookout for trouble ahead.

Thanks for posting this– it is so good for your readers to know that you have horrible experiences, too. It keeps the beginners from giving up and thinking there is something wrong with them, when it was really just a bad cashier.
But I am the same as you; I pout for days and don’t even want to look at the items I purchased because it makes me so angry at what went wrong. When you put so much effort into a shopping trip, it feels awful to have an ignorant cashier ruin the whole thing.

Erin- I heard about that! Yuck! I have been watching the policy and waiting for changes and have yet to see that in print. No the only thing that did work was the e-coupons for me! My problem was just a careless cashier.

I do think Safeway will lose customers if that policy rolls out nationwide. I understand why they would do it of course, but the reality is that the e-coupon stacking is one of the only reasons that I take the time to shop there. Otherwise it is definitely not one of my favorites.

If Safeway eliminates e-cpn stacking, that’ll be the end of my Safeway shopping. I use to shop at Lucky’s and Foods Co (approx 3-4 cities away) because they had cheaper prices. The only motivation for me to shop at Safeway is because of the e-cpns. One of my local Safeway’s hassled me twice about internet coupons (after no problems for several months), so I haven’t been there since. I was in line for 10 minutes essentially arguing over one $0.55 internet coupon. Hey, it was the principle. =) That was my last trip, and now I drive a little further to a different one.
