I have mentioned tips for travelling with children and saving money on road trips.
I also wanted to mention one other little idea that I came up with to keep the children happy when we are in the car.
This really comes in handy when you are on a drive because they can reach lots of things themselves and they have a place to store all their treasures (without junk rolling all over the car.)
It also works to hold any garbage and the best part is this entire thing will set you back just $.77! Yeah!
Home Depot sells little canvas aprons for just $.77. These can be found with the tool belts usually on the bottom self. I love these aprons. I recently used one of these to hold things when I volunteered to help with art at VBS.
It was super handy to have Sharpies, the schedule, my phone etc… all in one spot.
These aprons have a bunch of other uses. I once wrapped a birthday gift for my Dad in brown craft paper and used this apron as a ribbon around the box. I tucked his birthday card and a few other small trinkets inside. It was really cute and very original.
Here is a cute way that Sew Many Ways did a similiar gift wrap. Fun right?

And I have seen lots of Construction themed birthday parties where these were used as favor bags. Just add a few little trinkets and candy and you have something really cute for the kiddos.
So I decided to use my apron in the car to hold pens, books, notebooks, sunglasses, snacks and more…
I just used some paint I had (just craft paint not even fabric paint) and covered up the logo and then added Googley eyes to make it more fun. I wasn’t feeling especially inspired here but you might be able to come up with something cuter.
So then I just tied the strings around the car seat (and these lay flat so they aren’t annoying to the person sitting in that seat.)
Both my 4 year old and 5 year old are in car seats and they were able to reach this perfectly. I didn’t have to adjust the seats at all.
My kids love to have all their little things right at their fingertips so this worked really well for us.
You can see lots more easy DIY ideas on my Pinterest board here.
AND if you can use a few things at Home Depot (and who can’t!)- here is a $5 off $50 Home Depot coupon.

LOL- I am not a genius at all but thank you so much for your comment. I always wonder if people think I am a total nut with the things that I find useful ;). Radio silence on posts is the worst :D.

I agree with Jessica- you are a crafting Superwoman! I’m just not much of a commenter. But I’ll comment today- you’re awesome!

I love this idea!! We are flying to the east coast and then driving for 3 weeks. I thought I would have to hit up the dollar store when we got there, but these aprons I could indeed fit in my luggage!!! And I agree GENIUS!!!!!

My husband was at Home Depot when I read this post, so I made a phone call. We are going on a short trip this weekend, so we are going to give these a try. Thanks for all of your crafty ideas. 🙂

Great Idea! Have an 8 hour road trip with 4 kids under 8 coming up, so this is perfect.

Where were you when my boys were younger? LOL. Oh and I used to be a radio DJ in my earlier days and radio silence or dead air in “radioland” is a DJ’s worst nightmare. I still have bad dreams that it happens to me.
