I have a super simple craft project for you today to dress up your Superbowl party or for any sports or football themed parties. This is also a fun idea for a sports themed bedroom- these jars would be perfect on a desk to hold pencils and markers for kids.
This project takes about 10 minutes and I think it looks really fun and festive.
To start I dug out two old mason jars and used an inexpensive brown paint and just quickly painted all around the inside of the jar. I tried not to do too thick of a coat because you want the paint to dry and that can take awhile. I let it dry for a few hours and came back and did a second coat of paint to be sure there were no streaks.
Once that coat was finished and the brown was nice and uniform, I set the jars upside down to dry- this just helps to evenly disperse any glops of paint you might have in the jar. It is cold and rainy right now so it did take awhile for these to completely dry- maybe 2 days. After the first day I went ahead and flipped the jars right side up.
Once the jars are totally dry, I used so scrap vinyl I had on hand to just quickly cut laces. I didn’t measure or anything, just quick cuts as this doesn’t have to be perfect. If you don’t have vinyl, perhaps you have a white sticker paper for labels or even just white paint to paint the laces directly on the jar.
I like to pop a cupcake liner at the bottom of the jars when I am using them to contain straws and forks just so people’s utensils aren’t in direct contact with a painted surface. You could also cut a small piece of foil or parchment paper and lay it flat at the bottom of the jar.
Next I picked out some black and green striped paper straws I already had on hand (buy them from the party section of most stores or here on Amazon.)
I used a little Washi tape in gold glitter I also had on hand- any colors/ patterns would look great. Originally I planned to use green straws and black tape but I decided to just use what I already had for this project. Team colors would also be fun! If our beloved Seahawks had made the Superbowl this year, I would have used blue straws with a green glitter tape.
I wrapped the washi around the straws (low enough so people can still drink out of the top) and folded the tape and then trimmed the end to look like a flag. Just takes seconds to do and depending on the type of washi you use, you can write on the washi “Go Team!” or maybe even the name of the person to keep track of drinks. Glitter tape wouldn’t work but standard washi certainly would.
Super simple right? The best part is I spent no money at all on this project but even if you do need to buy everything, it should be extremely affordable.
Here are some cute Brownies you might also consider for your party:
