Easy DIY Wood Trivets

DIY Wood Charger

So here is a really, really easy little project you can make in just minutes.

I love these wood chargers- I have seen them at lots of stores for $20+.   I have wanted one but then I can never quite justify the purchase.  I am also not in the market for a chain saw to make my own so here is another option.

I spotted these little unfinished wood pieces at Michael’s for $9.99.  These were with all the other unfinished wood items.  I used a coupon and paid about $6.00.

Now you don’t have to do anything with these- they could just be unfinished but I used a varnish that we already had on hand.

If you don’t have varnish, you might want to pick up some MinWax at the home improvement stores and that will give a little seal to your trivet.

If you stain or varnish your trivet you obviously won’t want to serve food right on top of it but you can still use it to hold bowls, cupcakes, candles, flowers or whatever else you have in mind.  I think it would be pretty as a trivet to hold hot dishes for the holidays.

If you do want to serve food right on the charger, there is a butcher block oil that you can purchase at the home improvement stores.  I have not tried it but you can seal unfinished wood with it and it is safe to use for food prep.

You can also use paint, chalkboard paint– whatever you like.  This would be pretty with a red paint and NOEL or something in white for the holidays.

I wanted to make this to hold some sort of little holiday centerpiece with pine cones, candles, cranberries.

Homemade wood trivet

I just grabbed a few little decorations from the storage bins last night and this is how it will look with a few holiday decorations.

I am not sure if this wood can be used for an actual charger.  Most of the pieces that I found were oval in shape so they might not fit a standard plate.    If you do find round ones, look how beautiful this looks for a dining room table:

And here it is with chalkboard paint and then used as a place card.

We usually serve olives, french bread and other little antipasti for entertaining so I am very excited to use my little wood trivet to hold those items.
