Target: iPhone Upgrade Offer

There is a nice deal on an iPhone upgrade in the weekly Target ad.  I mentioned this in the weekly matchups but I wanted to detail out how it worked for me.  I actually did this upgrade myself.

So if you sign a 2 year contract with Sprint, Verizon or AT&T, you can get an iPhone 5 16GB for $149.99.  They also give you a $25 Target gift card back.  If you already have a contract this will extend it for 2 years.

PLUS you can trade in your old working phone for a certain amount and they will credit you another $25.  So basically $50 back on that $149.99 price.

You can get a very rough idea of what your phone trade in value will be here.

Now I did this myself and traded in my iPhone 4s for the 5.  Here is how it worked out for me:

Pay $149.99 for the iPhone 5
Calfornia taxes and fees $41
Paid $191
Got back a $25 gift card

They will tell you what your old phone is worth while you are there and at my store, I was quoted $192. I received a mailing label and was told once I ship off my old phone I will get a $192 Target gift card in the mail plus a $25 gift card which is the credit for trading in a phone.

So this worked out pretty well for me.

Reader Tiffany let me know that she also traded in her phone today and here is how her transaction worked out:

Buy iPhone 5 at $149.99
Add $52 in taxes and fees
Get $77.50 back in trade in value for her phone
and get a $25 trade in credit
Final price:  $99.49 and get back a $25 gift card

You might want to check here first and just make sure your store does indeed offer the mobile services.  I actually went to a store by my house and they didn’t have mobile service so I had to drive across town to another store.

Also your mobile plan will need to allow for an upgrade on your phone or you might have to pay extra.  The extra is a big chunk of change (like $200).  It might not be a bad idea to call your service provider ahead of time and check it out or they can look it up in the store.  I have AT&T and they were able to look up our cellular plan and work out all the details for me on the spot.

If you decide to take advantage of this offer let us know how it goes for you!

Oh and PS:  don’t forget to sync your phone before you take it in to the store so all your data will transfer to the new phone.

Interesting–I have an Iphone 4s on Sprint and the service is HORRIBLE! Missed phone calls, etc. What are the phone plans on the services with the iphone 5 for unlimited data and some minutes? I’m currently paying about $45 a month.

Any idea how long this offer is available for? Or is it just through this week’s sale cycle? I’d love to take advantage of this!

Hailey- it is in this week’s ad so I believe just through Saturday. You might check the tiny print on the front cover of the ad to be sure though.

Do they have a deal for the 32GB or 64GB?

Kristy, I would call your store and ask. I didn’t see anything about that at my store.

Did you use your red card..? Did you also save 5%?

Krysti, if you would like to use a red card you will save an additional 5%.

Did this today. I got $127 for my iPhone 4 plus $25 for trading in my phone. Out of pocket was $53.24 (mostly tax) and received a $25 GC. Such a good deal. I didn’t use my RedCard because my Amex extends the warranty by 1 year (total of 2 years), which is worth more than the very small amount I would save after all the credits.

Dennis did they give you the $127 credit for your old phone up front?

    Nicole,

Almost every store should give it to you up front. Apparently my store is the only one in the state of California that is not allowed to accept phones on the spot. I am sure the vast majority- if not all other stores- will just give you the amount on the spot.

Yes, I received the credit upfront.
