How to Store Hardboiled Eggs

How to Store Hardboiled Eggs

Do you make hardboiled eggs frequently?  I do!  I have these all the time in the morning because often I am in too much of a rush for breakfast or I am just not hungry.

This is a little tip I just learned from a friend- really I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of it myself but I thought it was clever.

If you do make hardboiled eggs you might consider using a little marker to put a star, heart, smiley, HB or whatever notation you like on the egg.

Then you don’t need to worry about the hardboiled being confused with regular eggs in the fridge.  I actually store eggs in a bowl (not the container) and have had my husband grab one of my boiled eggs by mistake.

So there you have an easy tip- never get them confused again.

Just be careful with the pen you use.  Some pens might leak through the egg shell.

And by the way, here is a super simple way to get perfect hard boiled eggs.  (In the oven or on the stovetop!)

When I make hard boiled eggs, I do a dozen at a time. Then I write “HB” on the top and sides of the carton so they don’t get confused with the raw eggs.

Next time you make a hard boiled egg, take it and an uncooked egg and spin them on (on their sides) the counter. You will always be able to tell which is which because of how fast they spin. 🙂 I promise, the difference the rate of speed will shock you!

I peel all of mine right away after boiling and cooling them, and store them in a tupperware container in the fridge. That way they are ready to eat right out of the fridge.

I used this marker trick for years… then I kept forgetting how old the hard boiled eggs were so I just started writing the date I boiled them on with the marker.

    Thanks Charlene. Questions:
What marker or pen type does not leak through the shell?
How long do they last in the fridge?
What is the easiest way to peel on-the-go? (seems to always take me forever)

I use a Sharpie to write on my eggs and have never had any ink leak through. According to the USDA hard-boiled eggs should be eaten within a week if refrigerated: http://www.fsis.usda.gov/Fact_Sheets/Focus_On_Shell_Eggs/index.asp#21

Like K Crew, I peel mine right away or the shell sticks, even on not-so-fresh eggs.
At Daiso,I found some containers that I think are for tofu. They have a removable drainer insert inside. Keeps peeled eggs from sitting in their own liquid. I like these containers for berries & cut melon too.
Daiso is a japanese dollar store. There seems to be a lot of them now but if not I’m sure many other places must have tofu containers like this- just not as cheap (1.50 )

Great tips. My 7 year old loves hard boiled eggs as snacks, will get some ready for her and leave in fridge.
