I have used these egift cards before and they are super easy- just scan them when you go to Starbucks or if you have Starbucks Rewards you can add the balance to your current card (so you get the stars).
You do not need to use it all at once, the balance just stays on the card until it is gone. You can get anything you want with it- cups, drinks, food, beans… etc…

How do you add the balance to your gold card?
Lisa, I have the app and I can open it up and when you see your balance look for the + sign at the top right. Add the numbers from your certificate and then if you want the stars you will need to transfer the balance to your registered card. You basically just drag it down to add the balance to your existing card.

I think maybe you might check again. Maybe you have an old credit card in your account or something. Mine went right through and I already added the $10 balance to my existing Starbucks gift card.
It is sold out now though so did you just do it? Maybe you caught it just as the offer was ending. I did mine when this was posted last night.
