Shopping Trip: Grocery Outlet

I don’t mention Grocery Outlet very often but if you have one of the stores in your area, you might check it out!

We just got a fancy new store in my city so I finally dragged myself in to have a look.

The things I don’t like about grocery outlet are- no coupons (they won’t accept manufacturer coupons- just store coupons you can get by subscribing to their emails) and the changing inventory.  On one hand it is cool to find new things every time you shop but on the other hand if you have specific things you want you might not find them.

Grocery Outlet does have a lot of hidden gems- they buy overstock items, discontinued items, old packaging etc… so you will find tons of high quality name brands.

The prices can be incredibly low on things but the most important note is to make sure to check expiration dates!  Often they will slash prices but the item may be on the expiration date or close to it.

I have found some really great deals on organic items in particular- like juices and lunchmeat.

To give you an idea- here is what I paid for the items above:

  • (2) Tillamook Sliced Cheese $3.99- 2lbs (I pay $7.99 for this at Costco!)
  • Kraft Fresh Take $.99
  • (2) Hillshire Farms Sausages $.99
  • (2) Cuties Juices $.33 each
  • Philly Cream Cheese Sun Dried Tomato $1.29
  • Philly Pesto Cooking Cream $.50

So the total was just about $12.  Many of these items were on or close to expiration.  Not a biggie for me, I popped the sausage and cheese into the freezer.

The Fresh Take we used the night I shopped and I plan to make pasta with the cooking cream tomorrow.  So it can be a treasure hunt and actually this week worked great since I was totally not in the mood to figure out a menu plan.  The deals I found kind of guided me into a few dishes.

I see a banner ad right on your site that maybe not all users will see
    It’s for $5 off $20 coupon
this one specifies South Bay, but may work for other zip codes:

I like to check out their organic items a few times a year.
They’re displayed over the freezers in my local GOs

We have one here to and I never checked it out since it is out of my daily route. So I need to get over there to see how much I can save, I was able to print out the $5 coupon and it says it works at ALL grocery outlet! Thanks a bunch 🙂

Too funny. I have the exact sausages in my freezer, too, from GO! Chicken Apple with Gouda Cheese, mmm. Totally with you on how a trip to GO sparks menu plan ideas. There are recipe ideas on the sausage overwrap. Going to try Couscous, sausage, dried cranberries, chopped apple, sprinkled w/ toasted nuts. Also, Pasta, sausage, sliced zucchini, red bell pepper, onion.

I like mine because its in a horrible part of the city I’m next to, and so the markdowns are usually on things that no one really wants. Like healthy, organic, fresh items. lol Totally a hit/miss store, but thats one of the reasons I love going there. Didnt know about the coupon, thanks!

I LOVE Grocery Outlet. I go once a week to see what’s new and I have saved a ton of money on organic items. My favorite find is always the Stonyfield yogurt. Also, they have a lot of organic shampoos and conditioners and laundry detergent at half the price! I have converted a few of my friends into Grocery Outlet shoppers too!

I was told at my store that they have online coupons if you go to the Grocery Outlet Website. When I went to the site I noticed that if you sign up for emails you will get a $3 off coupon, but I did not see any food coupons. Does anyone know if they have food coupons anywhere?

There’s one in Roseville again? I was so sad when the GB one was hijacked by Walmart 🙁

    Shelley,

I never really liked the one in Granite Bay personally but there is a really fancy new one on Lonetree next door to the Dollar Store. Just past Target and where the Blue Oaks theater is? Over there.
