If you are trying to get fit for the New Year, I have a few apps to recommend that might help you out.
Sadly for me, my girls love to go to the pool and so I only have about 3 more months to get myself into shape for bathing suit season. (People seem to give me strange looks when I try to wear sweatpants to the pool — so time to get it together.)
If you are looking to increase your energy and tone up, here are several diet and fitness apps that you might want to check out to help you meet your goals. Almost all of these are free with just a few that are very inexpensive. I have links included in the post for both iTunes and Android when possible.
C25K Free is the Couch to 5K program. This is a running program that slowly trains you to the point where you can run a 5K. This is an AWESOME way to get started and it really does slowly move you up so you stay encouraged and moving forward. I explained the entire program in more details here.
This one tracks your progress if you decide to start running or just walking too. This uses the GPS on your iPhone to track your progress and you can set it up with alerts and such to remind you to get off your fanny.
This app will help you assess your current situation and help you come up with a program to achieve your goals. It tracks and stores your reps, calories burned etc… to track your progress. You can also sync this to other apps you might be using for your fitness goals to get a complete overall picture.
This app has over 114 custom workouts with detailed instruction and audio support to help you stay on track.
You just pick your goal and you can find a custom workout.
This is an all in one app that combines your calorie intake and your exercise. I love this app but you do need to be disciplined enough to enter everything in. You can enter a goal weight or maintaining your current weight and it will tell you if you are eating too much and how many calories to cut.
This one is fantastic because it really does make you think about what you eat.
This one I haven’t checked out and I have a yoga app I haven’t been happy with. This one gets great reviews- it offers voice and visual instruction through 27 different yoga routines. You can broadcast it on your TV or change the music out to your own favorites from your library.
I started supplementing my workout routine with Piloga twice a week about a year ago. It is a strenuous class that I take but I feel amazing after I finish. It is quite possibly the only hour I actually spend completely focused during the week. If you tend to be a little high strung (like me!!) or just stressed or you are parked behind a desk all day you might consider giving yoga a shot and see how you feel.
Available for Android for $2.99.
This isn’t really a fitness app but it is a handy one to have. This just gives you a reminder of which fresh produce items you really want to try and buy organic (called the Dirty Dozen) and the ones that typically are the safest to buy conventional (called the Clean Fifteen.)
If you don’t want to download the app, you can grab the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen list here.

If accountability is what you need, I highly recommend MyFitnessPal. I have lost 22 pounds since September and the forums on their website provide a lot of encouragement and I’ve made new friends I’ve never would’ve met otherwise.

I totally agree with Julie. I started using My FitnesPal since October and I lost 25 lbs. It calculated my daily calorie intake which is 1200 daily and I stick to that and I got really good results. Plus I work out 1 hour everyday which really helped.

Wow 1200 calories per day? You must be tiny 🙂

My fitness pal is a great way to really keep track of what actually enters your mouth on a daily basis! It really helps you to have valuable calories so you don’t go over your goal. (I’m at my goal weightless of 75 lbs!)

Another great app is Map My Walk. It is a GPS not just walking. It tracks your shoe wear and all kinds of stuff. And it is social so your friends can encourage you.

I love My fitness Pal. I’ve been using it for 3 weeks and it really helps me focus on what I am going to eat and not just snack my way to gaining another 10 lbs. I’ve lost 3 lbs in 3 weeks. And I love that when I exercise I get to eat those calories
