There are so many holiday movies that are out these days, I thought I would do a little list of some wonderful Christmas movies that my children love.
These are movies that have become regulars in the rotation and that we look forward to pulling out year after year. I love movies as holiday gifts because the entire family can enjoy them plus many of these movies will be watched over and over.
Here is our list (in no particular order):
1. Polar Express.
This is such a great story and seriously who doesn’t love Tom Hanks. Make some hot chocolate and sit back to watch this classic.2. A Charlie Brown Christmas.
This one always takes me back to my childhood. Charlie Brown is given the task of directing the annual Christmas play and nothing goes as planned.3. How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
I am a fan of the classic cartoon but there is also an updated version starring Jim Carrey.4. Mickey’s Christmas Carol.
This is an adaptation of the classic story and perfect for little Mickey Mouse fans.5. Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups.
This is a new release and follows an adorable pack of pups that show how they can spread the Christmas spirit to save the holiday season. My girls loved this movie- it is a really sweet one for the entire family. (Available Nov 20)6. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.
This is a great one for small children in particular- the classic story of Rudolph overcoming obstacles to save Christmas. This is one that most of us can remember from childhood so it will (hopefully) appeal to everyone in the family.7. Prep and Landing: Totally Tinsel Collection.
This is actually a set of two movies- Prep & Landing and Naughty vs. Nice. This is the story of elves on an elite special mission to save the holiday season. Very cute movies that would appeal to those looking for a little adventure.8. A Christmas Story.
This is a fun one for older children, the story of Ralphie and his desperate desire for a Red Ryder Air Rifle for Christmas. I think most of us probably remember that tacky leg lamp, the little boy getting his tongue frozen to a pole or just the classic line “You’ll shoot your eye out!” from this movie.9. Frosty the Snowman.
Another classic film that has been running for about 40 years now. The story of Frosty- created one day by children using a dastardly magician’s hat. The children have to save Frosty from both the magician and from the temperature which threatens to melt frosty.10. The Muppet Christmas Carol.
The 20th anniversary edition of this film was just released and this is based on the Charles Dickens classic novel. Michael Caine plays Scrooge and the Muppets add a lot of brightness and life to this story.
There are so many more fun movies that families might enjoy including Home Alone, Elf, It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street and my personal favorite National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.
And to be perfectly honest my little girls actually love Barbie: A Perfect Christmas (we watch that one year around in this house.)
Some of the new releases coming out this holiday season that you might want to check out:
- Brave– this is one of our favorites and a beautifully animated movie.
- Finding Nemo 3D– Everyone loves Nemo and now it is available in 3D! This is a perfect one for girls or boys.
- The Secret of the Wings- this features Tinker Bell finding her long lost sister and the difficulties they face to be together. I thought this was a beautifully done film.
I thought this was a good starting point if you are looking to add some new movies to your collection this year!

Great list! I love holiday movies. I would add ‘The Snowman’…they used to show it on PBS all the time but I haven’t seen it on in ages and I just looked on Amazon and it is only $5! And ‘One Magic Christmas’ is one I could watch over and over. And any version of A Christmas Carol’. 🙂

I second Barbie: A Perfect Christmas… we also watch that one year round, and my 4 year old gets up and sings along with the movie. It actually has a really good message and a cute story. A definite must if you have a little girl!
