Home Depot will have their next Kids Workshop on Saturday, February 4th between 9AM and 12PM.  They will be building the Keepsake Box pictured above, which your kids can use to hold personal treasures or give as a Valentine’s Day gift.

Here are the details:

  • FREE hands-on workshops designed for children ages 5 – 12 offered the 1st Saturday of every month at all The Home Depot stores between 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills and tool safety along with instilling a sense of pride and accomplishment.
  • All kids get to keep their craft and receive a FREE Kids Workshop Apron, commemorative pin and certificate of achievement.

I believe these clinics are on a first come, first served basis, but you might want to call ahead to verify.

My little girls would LOVE this.  Does anyone have experience with these?  Is 5 pretty much as young as you want them to be to participate or can they be a little younger?

We’ve done the clinics and it totally depends on the project. Generally I’d say 4 or 5 is about the minimum, but my younger daughter has tagged along and helped a little on big brother’s project. I think if you have a younger child who can follow directions well, they’d be fine :).

They actually except little ones as long as the parent helps their could paint etc. and eventhough it starts at 9, people line up a quarter till. Im definetely going to do this with my 3 year old.

We went to last months project with our 4 year old twins. They could not do the project on their own, but it was a great thing to do with them. I would recommend going :). One suggestion – get there about 5-10 minutes before the start time. There was alot of people there last month. Have fun!

I take my son who is almost 3 with his older brother and he does fine with help. It depends on your expectations i think.

Our nanny takes our girls to these whenever she has them on the right Saturday. Our twins are almost 5 and we have a 20 month old. I know the twins have been doing them for almost a year, now and they have always done pretty well (but need help with a hammer). Last time the little one made the craft and I don’t think anyone minded she was there painting along side the bigger kids. I think as long as they have help, there is not a problem with younger kids.

We’ve been taking our 5 year old for atleast 2 years now. You also might want to check out Lowe’s Build and Grow. They do one every 2 weeks. Feb 11th is a Valentine Card Creator. But you have to be sure to sign up on their web site atleast 2 weeks in advance as the fill up VERY quick, but as long as you are there by 10:15 you spot is reserved. One time they did a science kit that came w/ test tupes and cards on how to do 10 experiments – best one ever!

Thanks Ricky, I actually post the Lowe’s ones as quickly as they are put up online because you are right they do fill up really fast.

I have been taking my niece (age 9) and nephew (6) for a year now. Jackie can pretty much do it on her own, and I have to often slow her down, because she does not always pay attention to the directions well. Sam, I often have to help by holding the nail for the first few taps (scary sometimes :)), or holding a piece in place. He can be a little spazzy sometimes, so he needs a little extra help. They both love it though, and the have such pride in what they make. Some of the nails bend easily when hammering, so you have to be careful with that. But I think as long as you are willing to be patient and helpful, the younger ones can do it also.

I take my son every week and he has been going since he turned 2. Some of the projects I have to do a bit of the work, but overall, he is doing most of it.

My kids are now 22 and 20. Both went to Home Depot workshops almost every month between the ages of 5 – 9. They both had a blast and learned so much. I always stayed with them but only helped if I was needed. The only project my son never got to do was Tony Stewarts race car and that’s the one he really wanted. I can’t say enough about how much they learned. Two thumbs up!!!
