So I see that you say you are a Vegetarian, but I see meat on your shopping trips. Do you cook meat for your family or does your hubby? And are you the only veggie in your family? I ask because we have 7 in our family and only 2 of us are veggies (a little over a year now). Just wondering if you had any insight for me on the subject. I don’t cook meat anymore, I leave that to my hubby and oldest daughter. I cook vegetarian and if they want meat they have to cook it themselves. Have you always been a Vegetarian? And if not, how did it affect your grocery budget when you went veggie?
I have been a vegetarian since I was 14 and the rest of the family eats meat. My 4 yo doesn’t seem to like it very much but the other two are meat eaters. Typically my husband cooks the meat- since I don’t eat it I am always concerned about cooking it properly. I do a lot of crock pot recipes because I don’t like to actually handle chicken and ground beef etc… We do a lot of simple stuff- grilled steaks for example and that allows him to cook the meat when he gets off work. I just add marinade or whatever.
I think it saves us a little money but not a ton because I tend to eat a lot of cheeses and I usually make something different from everyone else so that is just more ingredients to buy.
Hope that answers your questions.
Thanks Charlene! I have noticed our grocery bill has declined just a bit because I don’t buy as much meat. I’ve replaced it with more grains/beans which are much cheaper. Since my hubby doesn’t like to cook much and my oldest daughter is a typical teen, not much meat makes it to the table, so I don’t have to buy it as much anymore. I think the cost of much larger portions of organic veggies and fruit have offset what could have been a BIG difference in our grocery bill. I can’t always afford all organic but I try and your site has helped me find great deals on other stuff that helps me save and feed my family better! Thanks for all your hard work and for taking time to answer my silly questions! 🙂
