Savings.com: Take the Savings Pledge

Savings.com has implemented something pretty cool. They have launched a savings pledge in an effort to encourage Americans to save a cumulative 1 billion dollars.

The idea is that every person can find a specific goal to save toward and then determine how much they can contribute toward that goal.
Then you take the pledge that you are committed to saving toward your goal and join the Savings.com Community.

I don’t talk about my personal finances very often because I just think we are all on our own path. What might work for me might not work for the next person. Plus some of us live in areas where the cost of living is very low and some in areas where the cost of living is very high so that makes a huge difference in what your personal goals might be.

My husband and I used to think we really wanted to work toward paying our mortgage off.  We have since changed our mind considering the housing market in California right now.  We also are not sure this home is where we plan to stay forever.

So I do think trying to be more conscience with spending and savings is very beneficial and it certainly worked for us when we were paying off our consumer debts awhile back.

We set a new goal and that is to really focus more on maximizing our retirement plans as much as possible.  That is our focus this year and we have decided to increase our contributions and get on a much better track toward retirement.

So if you are interested in setting a goal and committing a specific amount toward that goal, you might want to head over to the My Frugal Adventures facebook page and take the Savings.com pledge.  Then you will be part of the community and hopefully get some tips and motivation to continue on your path.

Your goal could be as little as an extra $5 per week toward your credit cards or as big as saving to pay off your home.

I actually really like what the Savings.com pledge says- my favorite bits are:

1. I pledge to Always be Smart, Not Cheap.  (Whoot!)

2. I Pledge to Buy Better.  (I wrote an article about quality vs quantity a few years ago on the blog actually.)

3. I Pledge to Love Myself and Ignore the Joneses. I Love this one too because when I first started using coupons years ago it was not the cool thing to do.  In fact many stores I went into didn’t have any idea what I was doing when I handed over a stack of coupons.  I was always the only person using coupons in stores like Target and Safeway and I would get a lot of snippy comments at checkout from customers and cashiers that implied coupons were basically the equivalent of not being able to afford to pay for groceries.  Now it has changed so much in my area and I remember a few years ago they would all but accuse you of shoplifting when you got great deals with coupons.  I stuck with it though and as a result we have saved a lot of money over the years.

So anyway, if you are interested in learning more head over to the My Frugal Adventures Facebook page and click on “Savings Pledge” on the left side.
