Here is the shopping for this week.  I sort of did a few little trips over the last few days as I was running other errands and found myself next to a store.

You can click below to see the details but this week was a total of $34.  I have $6 in ECBs, $1 in +Up and $5 in a cat left for Safeway for next week.

CVS $0
Bought 2 Tom’s of Maine Toothpaste $3.99
Paid with ECBs so nothing oop, have $6 in ECBs for next time.  (Also got the clearance items here.)

WALGREENS $.67
4 Kraft Homestyle Mac and Cheese $1.67 (see deal here)
Paid $.67 after coupons

2 gallons milk at $5.00/2- free after coupon
2 half gallons chocolate milk $2.99
*I got the coupons for milk here and I noticed too late that the cashier took off the price of the regular milk by mistake. The coupon was for a free half gallon of chocolate milk wyb a gallon of regular milk.

AMAZON: $10.85 for 1 box Stretch Island Fruit Leather
Free with Swagbucks gift cards
(My husband is trying not to eat refined sugar this year so I thought these were a good option when he is really craving sweets.)

SAFEWAY $21.14
4 v-8 Fusion Green Tea and Juice $1.99- Used (4) $1 coupons= .99 each
Frozen Spinach $1.29
2 Horizon Milk Singles $1- Used (2) $1/1 coupons= Free

Teddy Bear- Free with purchase of Hallmark Cards
French Bread .99
Safeway Wheat Bread .79
2 Russet Potatoes $2.24
Red pepper $1
Organic Rosemary $1.99
garlic .50
3 pints Blackberries $1 each
Kalamata Olives from deli $1.52

I had the $3 credit from last week plus I got a $5 cat for buying the greeting cards.

TARGET: $1.10

I bought 2 Nature Made vitamins last week when I was post Christmas toy shopping.  I used (2) $5 coupons and paid .55 each.  I had a $5 gift card- so actually paid nothing oop.

*If you are wondering why I haven’t purchased any meat in a few weeks- I am trying to get through what is in the freezer.  I usually buy a little extra when meat gets to be a really low price and once you do that for awhile you have a pretty stuffed freezer.  We are at the end of the chicken and pork as of this week’s meals but we still have a lot of ground beef to get through.

Just a heads up– I found a .50/1 Kraft Homestyle coupon on Kraft’s facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/kraftmacaroniandcheese#!/kraftmacaroniandcheese?v=app_6009294086

I tried to do the ground beef B1G1 with the just for U price and they didn’t give it to me:-( So I told them I didn’t want it… I did get 6 packages of the ground lean turkey, that was a pretty good deal. You got some great deals.

Stephanie I am confused. Why would your store have any say over that? You just select the beef you want and go pay. Your personalized price will adjust when you scan the club card. You shouldn’t need to ask for permission. I would test it on one pack just to be sure but I can’t understand how a store would be able to tell you that you can’t have your personal price on any item?

Both a friend of mine, and myself have the Just for U price of 1.99/lb on ground beef, we were both able to buy about 40 lbs (both of us have bigger familes) of it and use the BOGO sale on top of our Just for U price. 99cents a lb is an awsome stock up price.

I had the same problem with the beef over the weekend too. It only deducted the programs price difference on one of the packages and only gave me one free. So I went to CS and the lady was so confused. She ended up giving me $38 back (total bill was only $56). Which I think she just refunded me all of the beef. When I left, I was also confused. But I figured she knew what she was doing!!

I probably should have just gone home and called??? I went to customer service too. The lady told me that the Just for U price was over rided by the ad deal… I wasn’t sure what was right so I just said I didn’t want the beef. What is the customer service number that you call?

Well personally I would just do he easiest thing possible for myself. Usually I don’t want any hassle and I have found the majority of he time employees simply don’t understand how coupons and such work. If this was my situation I probably wouldn’t want to duke it out with employees. I would just select 2 packages of ground beef similar in price. I would go and buy them. I would look to see what I paid. If it was higher than I wanted to pay, I would walk right over to customer service and say it was more than I thought and can I please return this. If the price was right I would turn around and buy more.

You can find the customer service number on the bottom of your receipt.

As I understand it, the Safeway register system will override your Just for U price if there is a BETTER price available through weekly card club specials or coupons you are applying. If BOGO gave you a better price per lb. than your $1.99/lb. Just for U price, then you’ll get the BOGO price but not both combined. In other words, Safeway (at least in my experience) has always given me the best available price but I can’t stack them. I was resistant to the Just for U system at first because I noticed some weekly deals or in-ad coupons would yield me a better price and it was exhausting cross-referencing things constantly and double-checking that I always got the best price regardless, but over the weeks it seems like I am getting the best price pretty consistently. Maybe someone else has had a different experience. I DO find that scouting for Safeway’s in-ad coupons + card club specials + Just for U personalized deals and back-of-house coupons, not to mention mfgr coupons, is one or two layers too complex. I would not be surprised if Safeway gets a lot of negative feedback and customer requests to simplify.

That has not been my experience. I have a freezer of ground beef from the last time when this exact deal came around. It is certainly possible that things have changed in the past few weeks though so again just try it. The BOGO price is like $3.50-ish so the better price should prevail.

The worst possible outcome is an extra 5 minutes at customer service to return the product. If that is too much to deal with just go to U Scan and you don’t even have to complete the purchase. Ring the items up and enter your card number and see what the total is. If it is too high just say you bought the wrong thing and to take it off.

That is pretty much what I did… I bought two packages and when the price wasn’t what I hoped I just headed straight for CS and returned them… Oh well.

I did the ground beef deal without a problem. I bought 11 pounds at 99 cents/lb. The thing you have to be careful on, is it is the value packs that are on sale B1G1…NOT the smaller packs.

    01/17/2011 at 4:32 PM

Amy was it Rancher’s Reserve beef by any chance?

  15. Randi says

    01/17/2011 at 6:21 PM

    Charlene,

I just emailed you a picture of the exact beef that I bought. It is the value packs, but they are labeled with orange BOGO stickers. They are sitting next to other ground beef (which I believe was the Rancher’s Reserve) in the meat display, so you do need to be careful when you’re grabbing them.
Make sure that you get your pks as close in weight as possible. What I noticed was the BOGO will be the next lowest price. For example:
    pkg 1 – 15.43 (charged)
    pkg 2 – 15.40 (free item#2)
    pkg 3 – 16.97 (charged)
    pkg 4 – 15.25 (free item #1)

You’ll be charged for the 2 highest prices and get the two lowest for free. I tried making sure mine were as close as I could possibly get.

Ok thanks Randi! Stephanie did the ones you grabbed have a bright orange sticker that says Buy One Get One? I really think this should work for you so I can post Randi’s pic if you want to see it. Otherwise, I just posted a coupon book with a $2 off Rancher’s reserve beef coupon that might make tiny packs of RR ground beef a good deal.

I know that it was the B1G1 ground beef and the price was like 3.50 per pound… I think tomorrow I’ll just call customer service. I still have two more days for this ad cycle. It sounds like people are getting their ground beef for .99 a pound though. I thought maybe you (Charlene) just got lucky. So weird. Thanks for everyones help.

Do you know when Just for U will go live everywhere? I live in MD and I can’t get the personalized deals yet. It just sends me to digital coupons.
