I mentioned this deal on the weekly matchups but I wanted to test it myself before posting again.
Safeway has two overlapping promotions running on Hallmark cards and they do stack.
If you buy 3 Hallmark cards in one transaction, you get a $5 catalina back for your next purchase. This does not apply to the $.99 cards but if you can find $1.49 cards, it would be a .50 moneymaker.
There is also a free teddy bear available right now when you buy 3 cards. The bears are actually pretty cute and I saw a dark brown one or light brown at my store.
I could not find $1.49 cards but I did find (3) for $1.99. I paid $5.97 + tax and got the bear for free plus a $5 cat for my next purchase. The bear just showed up at 0 on my receipt.
Safeway runs these promotions frequently and for some reason the Hallmark cats don’t seem to work for everyone. You might look for signs in your store just to confirm it is running in your area.

Is this good on any kind of card or is it only Valentines cards?

I have only found 1 store near me with the bears. And no signage at the other stores
Ok. Well you have the option to take your chances on the offer and possibly return the cards if the cat doesn’t print or simply skip this deal. Sorry I can’t help if your stores choose not to participate in the promotion.
I did this deal and it worked for me! I bought 3 cards at 1.99 each and got the teddy bear and my total was $6.47. The teddy bear rang up but when I swiped my Vons card it came right off!! I got the $5 catalina and went back and did the same transaction a few more times making my total $1.47 with my catalina – a new catalina printed out each time. $1.47 for 3 cards and a bear is pretty good!! There was no signage at my Vons for the catalina but there was signage about the bear. In my store the bears were on a free standing display in the greeting card row.
I was able to do this transaction at my Safeway, thanks Charlene! Note: there was signage about the catalina, but the bears did not have a sign. The bears were on the endcap of a different aisle, and there was a tag on the bear that indicated it would be free. If not for the blog I would never have known to look for it, so you may have to do some searching.
My bananas didn’t come off and now I don’t see them on my account (grr), anyone know if that was a limited time offer?
Worked for me. My Randall’s store had the sinage about te $5 back and the bears had a little tag on them. Thanks for posting this great deal!
So…I live in Western Washington and my local Safeway did not have any signage up for this promo and the bears were crammed together on a shelving unit with the clearance toys. I went ahead and got a bear and 3 Valentine’s Day cards at 1.99 each and it WORKED! Got the $5 catalina and free bear. You rock, Charlene!
Rachel where in WA? You know we lived there for years- in Kirkland, Seattle and finally way out in Monroe. The Safeway’s were always so yucky but now I kick myself for not using coupons back then. You have Albertson’s, Safeway, Kroger stores! All the good ones.
I live in the Mill Creek area, so in between Monroe & Kirkland. 🙂 Albertson’s isn’t my favorite but I did use doublers this week for the first time ever for some free items. I haven’t really explored Kroger’s (QFC) in terms of couponing. We have a really nice Safeway just a 1/2 mile away from my house so I do the majority of my shopping there.
I did this deal yesterday at my local Safeway (Randalls) in Texas and I also saw a sign that said if you purchased 3 cards and a pack of energizer (I think it was energizer) you’d get $4 back. I was scared to try it though since I was already doing the bear and the $5 back. Anyone else seen this or tried it?
I just did this last night and it worked great. got (1) $1.99 card and (2) $2.00 cards which were found next to the $0.99 cards.
