Safeway Trip $16

I was really curious to see how the e-coupons would work this week at Safeway- so I made a quick trip.  I also had to purchase the Ben and Jerry’s in the name of research for MFA- my catalina did not print and I suspect it is because I bought frozen yogurt.  I am going to call them in the next few days to check on that.

Anyhoo- here is my trip:

3 Cheerios at $1.99- used .55/1 and $1/2 coupons (I actually eat cereal for dessert hence the chocolate flavor)
Granola Bars- free with purchase (e-coupons did come off for this)
Nut Clusters $1.99- Used $1/1 coupon
Eggs .99 with in ad coupon
Danimals $2- used .75 coupon
4 Ben and Jerrys Ice Cream $1.99 each- used (2) $1/2 coupons
Milk $2.79
4 Nivea Lip Balm .99- used (2) $2/2 coupons (no beeps!)
2 Safeway hot dog buns .89
Bananas $1.67
Nectarines $2.01
Green Grapes $1.29
Tangerine Italian Soda on clearance .89

The grand total was 16.93 and I should have a $2 catalina coming back from Ben and Jerry’s.

The total of the e-coupons that came off for the Nature Valley and the Cheerios was $5.70. The trick with e-coupons is that they don’t expire before they are pulled from Cellfire and Shortcuts to load. So you may still have coupons on your card that you have forgotten about. Now the price of all 4 items I bought was $7.96- and the granola bars were free. I used $2.55 in paper coupons and had $5.70 come off in e-coupons. So I actually made a profit of .29 to buy those 5 items- you will want to be very careful that you buy extra items to cover any overage you might have if you try this deal.

Thanks so much for posting this deal! I am still fairly new at couponing and had my best shop ever with this deal! I got 2 boxes of Cheerios, 1 bag of nut clusters, 1 box of sweet and salty, the free box of granola bars, 2 sweet onions, and pita bread for $1.28, a 95% savings. I know lots of people on here get that kind of savings all the time, but that was really good for me and I was super excited =)

thanks for experimenting! Im glad the nut clusters are part of the deal! now, what about the granola thins? Anyone know if those work? Oh, and Charlene, may I ask how you were able to get 5.70 off in ecoupons? Are those all from the cereal and granola bars?

Wow Heidi, I’ve been couponing for a year and that is a sweet deal!

I bought 8 items to get two boxes of granola bars free. I didn’t want the sweet and salty so I got another kind, but the ecoupons still all came off. I paid 92 cents for all 10 items. I love deals like that.

Charlene – if you sign up for the Cheerios newsletter, they send you $1 coupons.

I actually had $4 of ecoupons for Nut Clusters and a $1 paper coupon that I printed awhile ago – so I had $3 of overage from that alone! I bought a total of 8 products and got 2 NV bars free which also took off the ecoupon for buying one NV bar (one for .50), the ecoupon for a Sweet and Salty(.75), and the ecoupons for buying 2 NV bars(3 at .50 each) – I didn’t think they would all come off, but they did! This is why I love the Safeway stores!

I looked for the thins but my store doesn’t carry them. The e-coupons just stay on your card as I said. So I never really know what I have on there because I usually just save all the new ones that come out. You can go in and look for the list of all the coupons on your card and add it all up but then some coupons will come off that shouldn’t. Like the Nut Clusters will probably come off when you buy any Nature Valley item.

Here was my deal on Wednesday evening: 2 boxes regular Cheerios, 2 box Honey Nut Cheerios, 2 boxes Apple Cinnamon Cheerios, 1 box Golden Grahams, 1 box Cinnamon Toast Crunch, 1 box Sweet & Salty Peanut bars, 1 box granola bars. Total for the 10 items after ecoupons and paper coupons, etc. was $7.52. Then, I got a Catalina back for $1.50 for the Apple Cinnamon Cheerios (Wednesday was the last day for that one), so I really paid $5.02 for 10 items or about $.50 each. Not as good as free, but pretty darn close!

My Catalina didn’t print (today) either, and I bought 4 of the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Charlene, did you ever get yours?

No I haven’t gotten to it yet Cjs. I am going to email them probably tonight or tomorrow.

i’ve been on the lookout for the nivea lip gloss and have been to several vons/pavilions (los angeles)… but to no avail. anyone in my area successful in finding them? if so, please share where you found them. thanks!

    I bought 3 B&Js ice cream and didn’t get $2 OYNO cat either. (I did get a $1.50 / 3 B&Js coupon.)

The Golden Grain pasta is $.99 each when you buy ≥4, and there are blinkie coupons for $2/5. So, that works out to $0.59 per box of pasta, which is not bad!

Charlene-Thank you for everything to you! Last month I succeeded in learning about e-coupons from your video but today I actually got to see them finally work. I bought 2 boxes of cinnamon toast crunch, 2 boxes of golden grahams, 2 boxes of fruit by the foot, 2 bags of the nv nut clusters and then got 2 boxes of granola bars free=all for a grand total of $1.14! Couponing is turning out to be so much fun-I just can’t figure out why everyone isn’t doing it!

Check your receipts for the nut clusters! I went to safeway and bought a pack of nut clusters and it turns out they only charged me 0.99 cents for a pack. I didnt realize this until I got home but if this is the case for everyone, then this could be a potential money maker!

To NJ #11, looking for a location to buy the Nivea lip care in Los Angeles — we found it on July 11 at the Vons in Montrose (north Glendale): 2039 Verdugo Blvd., Montrose, 91020 and got 4 free with 2 of the $2 off 2 MFQs. Hope this helps!

I just got back and had a terrible time. None of my e-coupons came off and the $4 off 4 and free granola bar promo did not work as well. I realized about the free granola and they reimbursed me at the store. Maybe the computer weren’t working right or something. I am going to take it all back tomorrow, have them return it, and then try to re-buy it to see if I get the e-coupons and promo price. Now my son is crying because I won’t let him eat the fruit roll ups because we have to return them. 🙁 This is the first time in a long time I’ve had this much trouble at Safeway.

NJ, I have no luck finding the Nivea lip at Vons in LA area either.

I had the same problem as Lisa with the e coupons non of them came off. And I want to confirm that the Apple Cinnamon cheerios were part of the buy 4 promo? I bought 2 boxes for the catalina on wednesday along with a box of honey nut cheerios and a box of cocoa puffs, 1 bag of the clusters and 1 box of nature valley bars. None of my cereals came down to 1.99 and the box of bars didn’t come off. I didn’t realize until when I got home because I was dealing with customer service about my ecoupons not coming off. I want to make sure I bought the correct things before I go back. I should get around $7.00 back because of those things not getting marked down.

  20. Charlene says

    07/19/2010 at 11:33 AM

Nicole- yes the Apple Cinnamon is because I bought them. The chocolate was marked too and my store didn’t have the banana for me to check that one. Hopefully your store is nice about it but the Cheerios are listed as part of the promotion at safeway.com. Just go to grocery delivery and search for Cheerios and you will see the red note indicating Buy4, Save $4.

I took my items back to the store today. They returned them at the price on the receipt (scanned fine with no price override) and then I rebought them. All the ecoupons and discounted prices came off just fine. My return was for $24.71 and when I rebought them it came to 12 cents! For some reason the Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Golden Grahams rang up as $0.99. Worth it for all the hassle it caused me and definitely worth $24 to take it back and redo the transaction.

I took the stuff back today, returned the items, and re-bought everything. All the ecoupons and promo prices were right this time. My return was $24.71 and then I rebought everything for 12 cents! For some reason Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Golden Grahams rang up as $0.99, but at this point I’m not complaining!

I just bought two Apple Cinnamon cheerios (among other things), and got the $1.50 catalina. I thought it expired last week, but it’s still working in Sacramento.

Thanks for your response Deborah! I wish I checked your post sooner. I was just in the area earlier today. I’ll keep looking…thanks!
