Well I wanted to update a post that went up over the weekend about buying a gift card at CVS to use for a Sears promotion that is running.
One reader went ahead and called Sears and for some reason they won’t honor any rebate request where one has paid with a gift card. I can’t imagine how that is possible- but I do apologize for the misinformation.
If you have already done this transaction, you might contact your CVS and see if you can return the gift card.
There is a chance they will still process the rebate, regardless of what the customer service person stated. I don’t like taking chances with anyone else’s money though and wanted to be sure everyone was aware this might not work after all.
Thanks for checking this out for us Dee!

I have submitted my rebate already online for this deal. It is currently in process. I can’t imagine they would not honor a gift card purchase for the rebate. The rebate form’s fine print does not exclude it. So, if in fact they do reject this, I will be on the phone to customer service..I will let you know what happens!!
Ok Danielle- I wasn’t sure what to make of this and I had 2 other people tell me the same thing so hopefully the information they got was wrong. I just wanted to alert people to a possible problem just in case.
I already submitted the rebate too! : (
I found out why from another site—they count gift cards as sales promotions!!
There may be no getting around this one.
Unless–one person went into SEARS, returned their items and then had the pay format switched to cash by a nice cashier. You could try that, but would probably have to use a different name/address the second time you attempt the rebate processing.
I’ve been reading this everyone online as well. I’d like to know if they’d honor the giftcard for future rebates.
Please keep us posted as I was going to do this for my Dad for Father’s Day. I just didn’t have the chance yet. Thanks for keeping us up to date! 🙂
Thanks for letting us know. This would be a super bummer. I already submitted my rebate as well. BUT I think that it’s still a great deal. Because of the friend and family deal over the weekend we ended up getting a pair of dress pants (on clearance!!), a dress shirt, tie and socks for the hubster for $57.22, which is still a fantastic deal for $146 worth of clothes!!! and that’s not counting the $10 ECB that I have.
Mind you – the CVS card is being sold at a 20% discount, so I wouldn’t return it just for this. Sears is always having sales. In fact, I originally bought these cards (and a few at Safeway at a 10% discount) so that my hubby could pick up a grill that is on sale for Father’s Day.
It does seem odd that Sears would not honor requests paid with gift cards, though. Those are already bought and paid for, after all. I’m going to go ahead and submit it, and worst case scenario, hubby would have picked up some clothing at a 20% discount, right?
Just spent 5 mins on hold and the rebate call service people told me the same thing they said that i would have to spend 50 from the giftcard and 50 cash to be able to submit for a rebate. so now i guess i have to hope that cvs will take back the gift card 🙁
I called cvs this am and once you buy a gift card you can not return it so i guess i can just try and play dumb about the rebate. oh well live and learn.
Nice way to be positive Lori! I feel like it is a great way to save on tools and grills and other items at Sears too. Very smart.
I already submitted my rebate. I guess I’ll wait & see and then get on the phone if the print states nothing regarding a gift card.
Yuck- I am so sorry. I hate posting incorrect information and having people get disappointed. I really hope they honor all the rebates.
This is absolutely ridiculous! Sears/Kmart is already losing shoppers everyday because of its poor customer service practices. I will not shop at Sears or Kmart anymore and will be sure to let them know why. They certainly have the right to exclude gift cards but if this is the case customers should be told up front.
I had big plans for this deal, now Im hesitant but I think the gift card and ECB deal itself is still pretty awesome so Im gonna give it a shot.
just called and confirmed that gift card purchase can not be used for THIS rebate. Perhaps they are on to the CVS deal?? They are looking for people to spend “new” money not old giftcards I guess. Was going to do this deal and try to return the 2nd $50 of mens stuff for something other than mens. He’s the only one in the house that doens’t need anything!
I already purchased my gift card and i am going to do this deal and if it does turn out to be a problem i will take it to the top. There is nothing in the fine print of that rebate that says how you have to pay for the merchandise. In no way is a gift card a sales promotion – that is garbage. Sears will be sorry if they don’t honor this – i won’t give up and i hope you all feel the same. If enough people complain about this (if it happens) i don’t believe they will follow through. I am going to do it and wait and see.
There was a Sears Internet promo that gave 20% off on mens athletic shoes for midday today only. The customer service rep (chat window) stated that the $50 come back cash offer is not valid with any other coupons or discounts. So, taking advantage of the 20% off Internet only promo would disqualify you for the $50 come back cash offer. Sale price apparal does qualify for this offer however.
I wish you would have done the research before posting. Some of us thought you did your research first.
I had to read that comment from “ME” twice because I was shocked at how rude it was. Interesting that you would make such a snide remark and then leave an anonymous name.
Charlene I hope you don’t feel this is your fault at all- there were a lot of blogs that posted this offer and you were one of the first to correct the error. I also like that you didn’t take the negative tone that I saw from others. That is one of the many reasons MFA is my favorite blog! I already did this and I still think it was a good deal even without the extra $50 rebate.
I asked on the slickdeals website about this problem and multiple people said they did the rebate last year with a gift card and had no problem getting the rebate. Good luck to all of you that have submitted! This is such a nice deal.
Charlene, I am new to the website and I appreciate all the research you do and how much money you have saved for my family. Thank you!
Thanks Sarah, I have a feeling it might be OK too but like I said- I don’t mind gambling with my own money just not with other people’s :).
ME, I try to research everything but this is a bit of a crazy twist. I am sorry you feel this is my fault- but this is a free web site so sometimes I make mistakes and companies pull fast ones and- well you get what you pay for. I am only one person and there are only so many hours in a day.
I guess blogging is just like any other job. There are always fun little sun shiny people like “me” up there to make your day just super! Don’t worry about it girl there are gonna be sucky people no matter what type of work you do. I have followed your blog off and on as well as several others and belive me I know you work hard at this! Keep up the good work and don’t get burnt out over ignorance.
Have to chime in with Stella, Charlene, you are the BEST. Thank you so much for all you do.
If you go to the rebate website (www.mysearsrebate.com), it says, “The Father’s Day Apparel Rebate offer (H100100) rules only allow for a $50 Come Back Cash Coupon. Sears Gift Cards and Sears Prepaid Cards are not eligible reward types for this offer.” I take this to mean that they will pay you only with a coupon, not with a gift card. I’m wondering if some of the customer reps are misinformed…
