CVS & Walgreens Beginners Series

Starting this weekend I am going to be working with my friend Kathy at $30 Weekly Grocery Challenge to put together weekly beginners scenarios for CVS and Walgreens.

The idea is to highlight the items that we feel are super buys for the week and put together very simple ways you can start to get various products for the least amount possible. Kathy will put together ideas for CVS and I will work on Walgreens.

If you guys feel this is helpful, I can also add in Rite Aid and on occasion Target.

Here is what you can expect:

1. Simple and easy ideas.ย  This will not require multiple Sunday paper inserts or multiple computers.

2.ย  Very basic transactions that you can do quickly.ย  We will assume you do not have Register Rewards or ECBs to roll.

3. The least amount out of pocket possible.

I know many of you feel the drugstores require too much effort and our hope is to show you how easy it can be to take advantage of the great deals each week.

I’d love to hear if there is interest in this!

I’m just starting out with couponing and shopping with ECB’s at CVS. This will be extremely helpful to me. Can’t wait to see what you come up with and try it myself!!! THANK YOU

Sounds great! CVS and Walgreens are difficult to do unless your highly organized and have some time to do it. Of course you take a lot of work out of it. (Thanks!) Somehow I ended up with $93 in register rewards this past weekend. I rolled over $56 and ended up spending $70 this weekend, but got about $275 worth of products. I’m stocked up on some things for a long time, but I better find a way to use these RR!

LOVE the idea! I just started couponing last month and sometimes I get lost trying to figure out multiple transactions and rolling RRs etc, plus trying to remember all the different store policies. It’s frustrating. Seems like every time I go into Walgreens I forget to do (or add) something and end up paying more than I should. Maybe one of these days I will get it right!

I think this sounds like a great idea. I read your blog all the time and I’m definitely interested in couponing. However, I don’t usually get multiple inserts and usually the really good deals require it. I’m definitely interested in seeing some simpler approaches. ๐Ÿ™‚

I would be very interested in this! I am definitely in the boat that the drugstores seem to hard to manage so I would love this!

    Thanks

Yes I would love this! I haven’t really done much shopping at the drugstores. I did get $12 in rebates from Rite Aid in Jan, and only paid $2 OOP, but since then I haven’t felt any were worth my time.

I went to CVS today and got my card, and also bought 3 of the Olay dish soap for $1.20. I then went to Walgreens, looking for the Physicans Formula “try me free” items (they weren’t there) but did find the Glade Soy candles in the clearance section, there was only one (the apple one) and I asked the cashier to ring it up and it was $1.59. So I did buy a smaller one for $3.29, used my $3 coupon and got it all for $2 and some change. Tomorrow I am heading to the other Walgreens to see if I can find two more on clearance.

So I am very interested in getting the RRs and ECBS but I just don’t want to shell out a bunch of money up front. Thanks for such a great website!

I am really excited about this! Thank you for all your hard work in this area! I haven’t started shopping at Walgreens because I am too stressed about how to go about it! It is always helpful to see how others do it for stores you already Try at as well!!!!
    So thanks so much!!!

I like the idea of the beginner series. But honestly using the register rewards and a few coupons really gets some great deals. I stop at both Walgreens and RiteAid each week for my “deals” and find that I can usually get in & out of the store in about 15-20 minutes and it takes me maybe the same amount of time at home to go over the list on the website and gather a few coupons to make my list. I have been doing this since October and have been getting some really great deals at the drug stores! Thank you for all you do — love the resources you provide.

I’d be curious to check this out. I’m one of those people who is just used to doing all my shopping at my grocery store and with a toddler, it’s too much to bargain shop around. I find all the pharmacy store deals, coupons, register rewards, etc. confusing and it looks like too much work, but if you could make it easy for me, I might give it a try, especially since there is a walgreens and cvs close to me.

I think that sounds super. I’m just getting started and my husband is thrilled with what I’ve been able to get for “nothing”. It has helped that several times I’ve had a prescription transfer gift card. We love that they get us there by giving us a gift card and twice already after I have transferred to another pharmacy they have sent me a check to have me return. We are liking these sweet deals. This was what I did in January:

    Total Shelf Cost: $260.90
    Total Coupon Savings: $155.56
    Total Savings: $273.51
    Amount Paid (after rebates): $(12.61)
    Savings Rate: 104.83%

I’ve learned so much reading your blog and other money saving moms blogs – I had no idea that these deals could ever be found at a drug store. Thanks so much for helping my family in these days when our finances are being hit right along with the rest of the people around us.

I am interested! I get my deals at Wal Mart and Target but am reluctant to go elsewhere because I am taking kids with me and hate to drag them around too much… I like them to have playtime at home. ๐Ÿ™‚ But if it’s worth the time and not tooooo much time, I’m interested!

I would absolutely love this! I’ve got the supermarket stuff down, but the drug stores scare me for some reason and Target too…I’m not sure what it is, but doing some of these deals that I see posted around for Walgreens and Target get me a little intimidated. Well more than a little because I never end up actually doing them. But would love too!! Please help! ๐Ÿ™‚

Great idea, ty soooo much! I rarely shop at Walgreens (there isnt a close CVS) just because the RR system is irratating & I rather just focus on the grocery stores. This is will soo much!

  26. Andrea says

    02/08/2010 at 9:34 PM

    YES, YES, and YES!!!

I went to WG’s for the first time yesterday to get my “deals” and boy was is CONFUSING and CRAZY! I read the policy on the RR program but once I got in there, I choked, forgot to use my “filler” which was sitting right in my buggy!

But I did get the huggies jumbo pack for $1.99!!! And free dish soap and free toothbrushes, so it wasnt too bad of a trip…

I think your idea is AWESOME!!

    Thank You for helping us!!

I think this is great! I just started “serious” couponing about a month ago and have been to CVS & Walgreens, but feel a little overwhelmed. It does seem like a bit of work and I’d almost rather pay the extra buck or 2 at Target or Walmart just to not have to deal with it! ๐Ÿ™‚

  29. Jordan says

    02/08/2010 at 11:49 PM

I would appreciate this, and know a lot of beginners that would find it helpful. It can be so overwhelming at first. I still don’t fully understand Walgreens’ RR policies, and have found it way too complicated. CVS and Rite Aid have been way easier and I have done quite well there with the help of this blog.

This would be awesome! Definitely add Rite Aid & Target in there. Those are the easy ones to shop at. I still can’t get the hang of walgreens and cvs because my stuff always expires before I can go back.

This is a great idea, thank you for sharing. Like a few other readers I’m farely new to couponing. I do my grocery shopping and mostly shop at CVS, there isn’t a Walgreens near me and sometimes do Rite Aid. But it does get overwhelming. I’m actually trying to figure out a few scenerios right now for CVS. For some reason they aren’t giving me any $4/$20 coupons anymore, now I’m getting $10/$50, which is making it a bit harder for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks again.
