Target Price Matching Update

11/12/2009 By Charlene 39 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links, please see my disclosure policy.

alphabet palOK, I just wanted to post an update after the question I asked last week on the Target deals.  There are new hot deals coming around every day suggesting price matching at Target.  Most of them recommend using a Target coupon in addition to the price match (and just to clarify the issue IS NOT price matching but using a TARGET coupon WITH the price match).

The one today is using the Leap frog Alphabet Pal- which will be on sale this weekend for $10.49 at Toys R Us (and more about that great sale coming later today!).  The idea is to take in the TRU ad to Target and get a price match to the $10.49 price THEN use the $10/1 coupon HERE and you pay .49.

Now frankly these deals irritate me because 99% of us can’t get them.  I do not want to recommend things to you that don’t work or are against store policies.   This is obviously a great deal but I want to warn you that my store will not allow a Target coupon with a price match.  You can certainly try this as apparently a handful of you are having success with price matching and using coupons.  But the majority of us will not be able to get this deal. I don’t want to sound like a jerk but I know how it feels to be excited about something, make a special trip and then get totally embarrassed at the check stand.  So you can try it but just be aware that it more than likely most stores will not let you do this. With that being said I really hope some of you can score this deal- because we have this little guy and it is really cute! (Getting off my soap box now).

EDITED:  Ok it looks like Nicole from The Economical Manager got an email from Target that you CAN do both right HERE.  Here is what my plan is (because I would love to get this little guy for .49 too!).  I would email Target right HERE and see if you can’t get the same email she got that is personalized to you.  We can all cross our fingers that we get the same response- if so than we are going to score some pretty spectacular deals this year!!  I think it is well worth the time to email and see what happens- I think having your own copy of this little beauty would be the best way to ensure the stores oblige.

I think I might try this at my Target just to see what happens. So, how exactly does it work? Would you pay for this toy at the Register and use your coupon at that point? Or do you take the coupon to customer service and use it during the price match? I guess it’s worth a shot and then I’ll know if my Target will do this or not.

A little off topic… We love this toy, but it didn’t take long for my teenage brothers to start typing in words like butt and poop. Of course! But rest assured it won’t spell swear words! When you get to the end of the word it says something cute like “you’re funny!” or “try again!” I thought that was hilarious and comforting…

One of my targes, allows the cashiers to price match at the register, and I have had success this week with the blu-rays, however the other target strictly follows the policy as posted on the target website, where you must first pay for the item then take your receipt to customer service. It is a pain, but in this situation since you are paying for the item first, the cashier will take your target coupon, and I have not had an issue at customer service once I went for the price adjustment, just a pain in waiting for the refund.

Thank you for sharing this deal! and in case anyone is interested, our stores were sold out of monsters inc. on blu-ray but I was able to price match the best buy deal where if you purchase up blu-ray you can get up for Ds game for $9.99. I have two kids, so I purchased two of these then used the $10 off two ds games from the target flyer and the up coupon for $10 and got the three games and blu-ray for a total of $19.98.

sorry so long, but it made me feel better since I missed out on the monsters deal.

    have a good day!

Apparently every store is different. My understanding is that you pay and then get money back at guest services. The best chance is to have more than one item on your receipt.

Well, this is sounding more exciting! I emailed Target just now, so maybe we can all compare responses. I will definitely be trying this out on Sunday.

I am sorry to ask a silly question. How do I get TRU ad ? Should I drop by the store. I do not buy newspaper. Is it possible to print their ads from website ?

I just printed the ad off of tru’s website. I plan on taking that along with the copy of the letter with me on friday. Since the deal is on for friday and sat i am betting they will only match the price on those days.

I will be e-mailing Target shortly- however, when I ask the same question Nicole did, I will also be copying and pasting her e-mail into MY e-mail so that they see they DID agree to this! Hopefully, they will not want to contradict what they’ve already said. If they do, I’ll just print Nicole’s e-mail and see what happens at the store.

  11. admin says

    11/12/2009 at 3:49 PM

No. If you can just sit tight until I can get all the info up for Toys R Us. They need the actual ad from TRU. They will not accept print outs- I can promise you that it is in the policy. Just hold on- I have a teething 6 month old and a 2 year old so I am typing as quickly as I can!

Thanks for the update! I sent an email to Target and am hoping for the same results (although I haven’t tried to price match at my target yet…but these would be great to donate!)

    Thanks

I found this press release from Target regarding price matching and will be printing it out and taking it with me. I think it might be easier than having hundreds of couponers emailing them to get the same response:

  14. admin says

    11/12/2009 at 4:49 PM

Hi Courtney- Thank you for the link. Am I missing the part that mentions Target coupons? I have personally taken this exact policy in and they were very helpful with price matching. They would not however allow me to use a Target coupon with a price match. It would be much easier to just take this policy in (which I have posted a few times) however they may still refuse to allow the coupon. I don’t see it mentioned anywhere here but maybe I am just missing something. I don’t want to be overly picky here but I also know that I will have hundreds of emails from very disappointed readers that have problems with this tomorrow. I would still recommend getting the hard copy of the email or a reference number as the other reader suggested.

Thank you, thank you, I just emailed them this afternoon and received an email back saying yes they do accept the coupon with the price match. I am taking it with me and we will see at 3 on friday.

I sent an email to Target Guest Relations and got a reply stating that I could use both price matching and a coupon. However, now I need to find the TRU ad for this weekend. Does anyone know where to get it?

I had problems doing the price match and using the Target coupons doing the Barbie DVD’s deal. I paid full price and used the 2 coupons at checkout then went over to CS to get my PA as instructed by my cashier. The girl at CS told me she couldn’t do a PA because the DVD was already “ringing up” at the $9.99 price. It did show that on the receipt but that’s because it was reflecting the $5 coupon (which was right underneath it!). I had to argue with her about it but eventually she caved in and gave me the credit back to my card.

I’m definitely going to give it a whirl on these Leap Frog toys. I have no toys for the baby so anything cheap is great!

Here’s my response. It won’t be the one I take to the store to get this deal in a couple hours. Out of touch or what?

    Dear Amy,

It sounds like you have some questions about price matching.

We’ve established our policy so guests may expect a great value on all our merchandise. Target doesn’t price-match or price-adjust with other competitor stores. Additionally, Target prices can vary between stores and Target.com. I’m sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.

Thanks for shopping with us. We look forward to showing you what’s new at Target.

Amy I had to re-email them as well because I had a crazy response too. The second time I used their language exactly- I think it was low price promise. So I said Can I use a Target coupon and still get the low price promise in your stores.

I tried this morning and think I confused the customer service gal. After the coupon was taken off it said $9.89 – so asking them to price match after that to $10.40 was confusing. Asked them to match prior to coupon and then deduct coupon after. She returned it completely and then re-rang it up. She was able to take off the $10 coupon plus an additional $5 so it ended up being about $5.49 for me. I felt like that was fair enough and didn’t pursue the $0.49 deal any further.

  26. admin says

    11/13/2009 at 12:33 PM

That is how I would have reacted too. Sometimes a good deal is good enough for me- don’t have to be great every time. You still got that toy for 75% off regular price!

I called my Toys R Us this morning to try locating the ad as I haven’t gotten it. He said it was in today’s paper. I’ll check it out and let you know in case anyone else is having a hard time finding the ad.

  28. Michelle says

I was able to just walk into Toys R Us and grab the ad. Just in case anyone doesn’t get the paper.

I went this morning and customer service was going to price match but after the target coupon my price was $9.99 so it couldn’t be price matched. The original target price for the toy was $19.99 at my target, it would have worked if it was priced higher.

    Happy hunting!

I just got back from Target and needless to say it was a bad experience. The lady at the service desk told me that I could not do it for a few reasons. One was that there was a % off on there and they do not honor %off and the ad was a doorbuster and they don’t accept those for price adjustment. I called Target Corp and the first person I talked to told me they were not honoring ANY Toys R Us ads and that stores had the right to deny price match for ANY reason. Needless to say I asked to talk to a supervisor and they did not really understand the rules either. I am frustrated and confused and think that this entire price match thing is more hassle then worth with Target because none of their employees can give me a straight answer. Better luck to everyone!

I just got 6 at Target. My bill was $120 (not exact) and then they did the price match which brought it down to $67. Then they took the coupons I had, and I paid $3.15!!!! I went in with the toys r us ad, my coupons, and the email from Target saying both could be used together. They were very nice about it.

I tried to do this today and they wouldn’t because they said they don’t match timed sales and since this was a 2 day sale it was a timed sale. My question though is, isn’t EVERY sale a timed sale? They all have an end date. Stores only advertise sale prices in their fliers so how is anyone ever supposed to price match.

Definitely not worth all the hassle in my opinion. I’d rather just shop somewhere else.

I went to Target this evening and got the last one. Before I went in I went straight to customer service with my TRU ad. I asked if they were price matching the ads and she said are you here for the caterpillar? She told me not to go to the register and just to come back there to make my purchases. I wanted the baby wipes too, but they were cleaned out as were the Santa potatoes.

  34. Dallas says

    11/13/2009 at 7:42 PM

Just got back from Target where they would not let me price match the caterpillar because they said they don’t price match ads which are door busters or timed (ie- 6am to 12:00pm or in this case Fri 3:00pm to midnight) They also told me that they will not price match any black friday ads which have times or say the word doorbuster on them! Err… I am so irritated

  35. Kelly says

    11/13/2009 at 8:44 PM

I went to my closest target store in Fairview, Oregon and the customer service employee told me that they couldn’t price match that item because they don’t do two day ad price matches. I have read their price match policy and I don’t see anywhere where it states this so I emailed Target and will see what their response is, it seems like this is hit and miss depending on where you live and what Target you go to…kind of frustrating that it’s not the same at every Target.

    Hi guys
I’m one among those lucky people to get caterpillar for .49c and I bought 2 of them.
I live in exton PA and my target has awesome customer service that they did price match and also while I was searching for my second coupon, she(rep) herself took the couponbook cut and scanned coupon for me.initially they said they won’t price match doorbusters but since this is a 2day sale and whn I said I want to buy this from target the manager asked the rep to go ahead and do it.
Thanks for all the info tht I gt from this site

I just went to both Targets in our area. I got the last 2 at both stores. I live in Modesto. I went to Guest services, showed them the Toys r us ad, and gave them the coupons I printed from the Hotcouponworld site, by the way you can print as many as you want, and they also have toy coupon books at the guest services counter. NO problems at all. I got $79.56 worth of toys, for a measly $2.12!!!!! yayyyyyyy!!!!!

    11/13/2009 at 11:50 PM

SSSOOO. I tried my luck. lol. Not so good. They didn’t want to price match the best buy blur ray deal but they did because he didn’t have anything in writing that said it couldn’t be honored. They did not how ever give me the price match for the alphabet pal. He showed me the policy “cheat Sheet” that they had at the register and it specifically said no time sensitive ads (It even gave the example of a door buster ad) So that you all know it also said no wrap around ads, computer print outs…. There were a lot of restrictions and that might be the reason for so many problems. In bold it said any price match can be denied! So even if it is legit they have the right to deny it to you. Hope this helps some of you. Target price matching isn’t on my agenda any time soon. Maybe that is there plan. Lol.

  39. Chelsea says

    11/14/2009 at 7:32 AM

I just read that Target revised their policy so that it now says they will NOT price match timed ads like 2 day sales. The sale has to run for a week or more before they will price match. Guess they’ve given away too many! Good luck to those of you that try today!
