I have a 6 month old and a 27 month old and getting healthy stuff into their little bodies everyday is a challenge! Maya has just started eating food and I usually make my own baby food. It is always a challenge to get the purees to the right texture and some of the prepackaged baby foods just don’t look so great in the stores.
So I was very excited to try a line of organic baby and toddler meals from Happy Baby. Happy Baby is a company that is growing quickly in the premium baby food market and I can see why!
I got to try the baby purees (ok I didn’t but Maya did) and I really liked them for several reasons. First the flavors are really unique! Since Maya just started with solids she had the 6 month flavors- Organic Pears and Sweet Potato. But they have baby foods for every stage -so we happen to have red lentils, salmon and quinoa in the freezer for her to try in the future! How fun to expose her to gourmet foods so early on and even better they are really easy to prepare. The baby foods come in a tray- like an ice cube tray- and you can either defrost them in the fridge or under warm water. The other reason I liked these foods is that they are exactly what they say. There isn’t a list of gross additives and the pears were a tiny watery and exactly the color of a fresh pear. So you can clearly see there isn’t a lot of junk added in.
We also tried the foods designed for toddlers including the Organic Puffs and Happy Bites Meals.
The Puffs were a serious hit- they are the size of Cheerios and come in flavors like Organic Greens, Banana or Apple. We tried the Greens which is a mix of rice, wheat, kale, spinach, collard greens and whole grains. Let me tell you my toddler would have happily eaten the entire container! I keep these in the car for an easy snack- you can also put these in little baggies and have them in your purse for snack emergencies.
The last product we tried was the Happy Bites frozen meals for toddlers. My favorite was the salmon sticks- each package had enough for about 3 meals. These are incredibly fast- like 60 seconds in the microwave and are probably the healthiest quick fix you will find. The Salmon sticks have fish, potato, chick peas, panko crumbs, red pepper, scallions etc.. and I was completely shocked that Adriana actually ate them!! She is going through a phase where she pretty much hates everything (except whatever is on my plate) and I popped one of these in front of her and before I could blink it was gone!
Now the major drawback to these products is that they can be a little tricky to find. They are currently carried in 5,000 stores nationwide but I actually went to two stores to find all three products. Happy Baby has thoughtfully provided a list of stores you can find the products in by zip code right HERE. You can also order direct from them HERE or through Amazon HERE.
Also, these are not the least expensive options out there. The little puffs are about $2.99 and the baby food was $3.99 at my store. Considering you get 12 cubes per package though I thought it was a pretty good deal! Plus the quality of the ingredients at this price are pretty impressive- I mean organic red lentils, salmon and quinoa! You can feel really good about giving these products to your little ones- so for me it is worth it to spend a little more.
The company is very active in a charity called projectpeanutbutter.org and for each purchase of a Happy Family product the company donates to feed a hungry child in Malawi.
So overall I really liked these products and I know you will too!
