Cleaning Out The Clutter.

In our old house, I had a huge linen closet that was dedicated to organizing our toiletries. Now we don’t have as much space in the new house and things really got shoved haphazardly into cupboards. I took a little time earlier this week to get things organized and to take stock on what we need. Plus I try to weed through our things every few months and get a big bag ready for donation.
.
The shameful state of things:

Much better! I had things sorted by category in baskets before. All of these baskets were given to me so it was a very inexpensive way to organize. I have learned that really every deal will cycle back around so I try to keep what I have on hand in moderate amounts. For example I currently have 6 body washes on hand. Since my husband has his own collection of men’s products- that is actually a ton of body wash. I really don’t need to bother buying any more for several months as I have enough on hand to easily last through the end of the year. If I can get it free I might grab a new product I want to try- or I might get a few to add to the donation basket. But otherwise I can sit back and wait until prices hit rock bottom on this product since I have enough to last several months.

I do try to keep things neatly organized so I always know what I have on hand. For example I just realized I only have 1 tube of toothpaste left. So I need to start watching for a free offer at the drugstores to grab a few tubes. I also took away all the medication since our toddler is fascinated with all the things she isn’t supposed to have.
.
Building up an inventory on items you get for free is not only a great way to stretch your dollars (so you never pay full retail again) but also a great time saver! I rarely, if ever, have to race out to the store because I have run out of something. I do however try not to let my stockpile control me. It is easy to get a little carried away and buy things in excess.
.
This has been a lifesaver for me this weekend in particular. Our toddler has come down with a cold and a little fever and fortunately I have medicine on hand. I also have a new toy from the gift closet to distract her a little and being prepared has certainly made a stressful situation much easier.
.
I’d love to hear what tips you have for keeping things organized!
