Home Depot- Free Workshop

04/23/2009

Share

Click here to sign up for Home Depot’s workshop to learn how to transform your backyard. I have been wanting to plant a few basic veggies and herbs this year to cut our grocery costs even more. Plus the convenience of having fresh produce in the backyard would be fantastic.
I have been inspired recently by Erin at $5 Dinners lovely square foot garden- which you can see here.
So sign up for a workshop at Home Depot on May 14th to learn how to customize your own outdoor space– on a budget! Last time Home Depot also offered a $10 gift card to attendees. I am not sure if they will repeat that offer but you can certainly ask.

I love my coupon pouch because:

1. It was free
2. It is easy to slip into my purse (and I don’t take it out- so no chance of leaving it behind!)
3. It is discreet
4. It is not awkward or cumbersome

Here is the gist of my system:
1. I use a cosmetic bag I have had for years (free!) that is super sturdy.
2. I have a series of envelopes- mostly with categories for my coupons like Produce, Dairy, Baby etc..
3. I color code the envelopes so it is super easy to peek inside and grab the maroon cleaning supplies envelope or the blue dairy envelope etc… If I need to find a coupon I just peek inside and usually can just grab the envelope and skim through it quickly.
4. I have separate envelopes for stores I shop at a lot- like Target and Safeway- that I get frequent store coupons from or catalinas. I grab the yellow Target envelope as I am heading to the store and peek through to remind myself of any prices to check or deals I want.
5. I have a separate envelope for FREE items- this is very important as the worst thing is to have something for free and forget it or have it get lost in a sea of coupons and expire. I hoard these coupons to really maximize my savings so it would be easy to forget what I have.
6. I have a misc envelope that serves to hold restaurant, retail store, auto shop etc.. coupons. Since I have this with me at all times I am never kicking myself for forgetting to bring a certain coupon when I make an unscheduled stop.

The calculator is always in the front as it is so important to keep track of your dollar amount if you are on a budget, or keep track of your total if you are doing a promo deal (like the spend $30 get $10 at Safeway). I also find it much easier to do quick unit cost comparisons to make the best decision when I buy.
.
This system works well for me as it is easy and quick. I live in an area where I am usually the only couponer in a store- except the lady that saves $2.75 on $100 purchase- and I don’t like to call a lot of attention to myself. A lot of people use the coupon binder- but for me that is just too cumbersome and my toddler would tear it to pieces in a heartbeat. Plus it would pain me to actually spend money on the binder and inserts so this appeals to my frugal nature.
.
So there you have it– my system! I usually plan my trips in advance and have my coupons pulled out and placed in an envelope so I have quick access to what I need. I do not cut every coupon from the inserts, I just cut what I think might be a good deal (like a $4 razor coupon), stuff we usually buy and stuff I want to buy if a sale comes along. Everything else stays in the insert- which I keep in plastic bins in my closet. Due to all the hardworking bloggers out there- I usually know in advance what coupons I need and I can easily dig them out and clip.
I would encourage new couponers to get creative and figure out what works best for you. Finding something that suits your needs is the best way to stay organized and ensure you maximize your time.
