Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

04/26/2009

Share

I will be starting a new series this week on creative and generous gift giving on a budget- one of my favorite topics! This will include lots of tips as well as examples of gifts I have come up with on a (less than) shoestring budget.

I will also be posting a list of lots of ideas for Mother’s Day– starting with this new offer from Gevalia. I have posted several times about the delicious gourmet coffee they offer here. You will be enrolled in a regular delivery program but you are free to cancel at any time- it is quick and easy to do online- you can cancel or suspend delivery even before the first shipment!

You can sign up here for over $75 in coupons– the link will take you to smartsource.com- which you can access directly on your own- but this link provides ALL the regional coupons which often times are way better than the ones you get in your zip code (like that great Purex BOGO coupon last week).

And enter here to win a $500 Visa gift card, 5 lbs of chocolate and $100 to 1-800-Flowers. Ooohh what I could do with $500 dollars!!

CVS 201

04/25/2009

Share

As I mentioned before, we have CVS opening in Northern California in the next month. I have never shopped at CVS but have always been impressed by the deals! So this is part two of a learning to CVS series! If you missed part 1, click here to get up to speed.
I intend to start CVS Scenarios in the coming weeks- in the meantime here are the deals from the pros:
And here are some advanced CVS tips:
1. There will be a limit to how many items on sale you can buy. This is highlighted directly on the sales flyer. Perhaps that is why many people have a card for themselves and one for a spouse?
2. Once we have shopped at CVS for 1-2 months, our cards will start generating CVS coupons. This is where you can really making a killing- stacking CVS coupons with manufacturer coupons to keep growing Extra Care Bucks. The most frequent CVS coupons that print are $3/15 or $4/20. This means the PRE COUPON amount of the transaction needs to be $15 or $20.
CORRECTION: The $x/xx are not as common as I thought so keep your fingers crossed you get lucky!
3. We will want to sign up for email offers here and CVS will send us a $4/20 coupon right off the bat. Hold off on doing this until your store is ready to open or until you are ready to get going as these coupons will expire.
4. The best part about CVS is that you don’t have to have an exact amount for ECBs. The cashier can automatically adjust the value of the ECB- so if your total is $2.99 and you have a $3 ECB you can still use it. At Walgreens you have to have the exact amount of the Register Reward or more in order to use it. CORRECTION: Some stores will allow you to adjust down the ECB’s but not all stores. This is an important point to learn with your new store.
I found Crystal’s post here very clear in explaining the basics of CVS.
Does anyone have any questions about CVS? Are you looking forward to a store opening near you? Mine opens in May which is just around the corner!!

Got My Cards!

04/25/2009

Share

What do you think? I told you about this great offer to get 500 cards for $1.99 here. I also paid shipping which was about $6.00.
These have already come in handy- obviously I use them for blogging- but I also arranged a playdate with another mommy yesterday. It is so much easier to give them a card rather than digging around in my bag for a pen whilst holding a squirmy toddler (that LOVES pens!) I also tossed these into a few contest bowls I spotted during my shopping trip yesterday.
Since I am in the process of redesigning my blog I didn’t have a logo to use. I chose a predesigned image from the long list of options they provide and I think it turned out wonderfully!

Reader Question: Safeway 10% off

04/24/2009

Share

\

I have had numerous inquiries about how to get 10% off at Safeway. The discount is linked to your club card and is typically for a short period of time, say 6 weeks. Whenever you make a purchase the 10% is automatically deducted after store coupons when you scan your club card. This is an amazing bonus for couponers as it is before manufacturer coupons. If I spend $30 and use $5 in Safeway coupons and use $20 in manufacturer coupons, I will get $2.50 off as my 10% bonus.
This means I only pay $2.50 cash.

Safeway offers this promotion to people for a variety of reasons- for example, we received this offer in the mail last year when a new Safeway was built in our area.

My discount only runs until May 6th. I was able to get it as I have a store that remodeled in my area and I was sent a coupon for 10%. I called and explained the dates of the coupon conflicted with my schedule and were there any other offers available? The CSR added the discount to my card.

It is hit or miss depending on your area and on the customer service person you get on the phone. You can try to call the number on the back of your card and ask if there are any offers in your area.

I do not want to encourage anyone to be deceptive or to take advantage of this generous offer. I have heard of all sorts of ways to get ongoing discounts and I want to make it clear we all lose out when stores feel they have been taken advantage of.
Good luck!!

Oye- already getting into May!! Don’t forget Walgreens is discontinuing the rebate program as of May so things will be changing… Also, remember to submit your rebates for April as the current catalog expires 4/25.

Campbell’s Soup $.59 with in ad coupon- use $1/2 I told you about here= .09 each! (I was only able to print one coupon- but hit the back button to try to print a second)

Dove Deodorant $1.99 with in ad coupon, use $1/1 from 3/15 RP= .99 each
Starbucks Ice Cream $3- use $1/1 IP here= $2 pint
Ecotrin Tablets $2, use $1/1 from 1/25 SS, get $2 register reward = Better than FREE
There is also a $2.25 IP here however the register will beep as the value is greater than the item being purchased. You can try to get a price adjustment or just skip the hassle and use the $1/1.

Rembrandt Toothpaste $5.99- get $5.99 Register Reward = FREE
5lb Dominos Sugar $2.49 w/ in ad coupon
Flipz Snacks $2/3- use $1/2 from 4/5 SS= $1 each wyb 2
Huggies Diapers $10 each wyb 2, get a $2 register reward.
Math: Buy 2 packs of diapers $20.00- use (2) $1.50/1 from 4/19 SS or by printing from the toolbar to the right = $17.00. Get $2 register reward = $15.00 and submit (2) .75 rebates to Caregivers = $6.75 per pack.

Did I miss anything? Let me know by leaving a comment below!
For more great Walgreen’s deals check out BeCentsable’s Grocery Gathering.
Additional Tips for this week’s shopping:
  • Be careful to seperate the Bayer Meter RR and the Bayer tablets RR for rolling scenarios. Since they are from the same manufacturer, you will NOT get another RR.
  • Don’t forget you will pay tax for all the “free” items- my tax is 8.25% which adds up quickly.
  • You will need fillers if you plan to use a coupon and a register reward on the same item. The .39 Hallmark wrapping paper is an excellent filler this week or I like the 2pks of batteries for .99 in the photo department
  • Your subtotal (before tax) needs to be the same or greater than the Register Reward you are trying to use. If you are .01 off the register will not accept the coupon.

See my transaction here and here. Don’t miss a thing! Subscribe to my feed (to the right) or follow me on twitter to get all the latest deals! Come back on Wednesday for Walgreens and Target advance previews.
