I just read on Hot Coupon World that the amazing $4/1 Pace Internet coupon I posted about last week was too good to be true. It was a reward someone earned off a contest or sweepstakes on the Pace web site and was meant for one use only. It is all over the web now and had no limits so I am sure thousands upon thousands of these will be redeemed. While the coupon itself is valid, the link to print the coupon was not meant to be shared.

I am always skeptical about these high value coupons and unfortunately I used mine before I was aware of the problem. Please do not redeem these coupons as this sort of coupon abuse hurts us all in the long run. If you remember the Target coupon that was fraudulent last year, you know many stores stopped accepting IP’s altogether and the stores that did, made things very difficult on couponers. I had to stop shopping at my favorite Walgreens after this episode as they treated couponers like shoplifters after all the publicity about this coupon.

Safeway: The early edition

03/27/2009

Share

Since today is the last day of Power Pump rewards and I need gas, I decided to do my weekend shopping early. My total after club card and before coupons was about $60. I paid $17.49 and got $12 in catalinas for my next purchase. I indicated the Chill at Home items in blue and the mix and match items in orange. **Just found a bag with two tubs of wipes and 2 Angel Soft that wasn’t included in the photo.
Here is the breakdown:

Brown Sugar $1.39

Bertolli Pasta Pouches x2 = $3 – $2 (used 1/1 blinkies) = $1 and got the $2 OYNO catalina

Pace Salsa $3.89- used IP to get this free **Please see post above regarding this IP.

Angel Soft TP x2= $1.50

Sfwy Potatoes $2.99

Morningstar Veggie Meat Products x3= $3.49 each- used $1/1 catalina from prior purchase

Kellogg’s Bake Shop Twists x2= $4- used (2) .75/1 blinkies in front of the product

Klondike Ice Cream- $2.50 (this should have been part of the Chill at Home promo but I don’t think it worked this week. My cat did not print and I went to customer service- they gave me back the catalina I had just used as the item was marked with a blue tag.

Boca Burgers x 2= $7.00

Huggies Wipes x2= $4.00- used (2) $1/1 MQ

Suave Lotion- $2.50 used free item coupon

Safeway Artisan Fruit Tart- $3.79- used $3/1 store coupon

Rancher’s Reserve Steak $2.95- used $2/1 store coupon

Sfwy Select Croutons .75- used $1/1 Sfwy coupon (see my post from yesterday regarding this coupon)- got $.25 overage

3lb Fuji Apples- $1.99

Organic Grape Tomatoes- $2.50- used $1/1 store coupon

Pineapple $3.99- used $1/1 store coupon and $.75/1 IP that can be found on the toolbar to the right

The prices indicated are AFTER the $5 mix and match promo credit to simplify. I used a $10/50 store coupon and used a $10 catalina I received last week for the Chill at Home Promo.

We have been eating a lot more processed food the last few weeks due to the great freezer promo. I have stockpiled a lot and am very happy to have so much Morningstar/ Boca products since they are typically very expensive. It is worth it to me to keep rolling this deal to stock up on vegetarian items that rarely have coupons.

I am lucky to have a lot of store coupons from a grand reopening but you can do this too! In Northern CA we don’t have doubles so if you live in a market that does you can easily get great deals as well.

Frugal Friday: Decorating Edition

03/26/2009

Frugal Friday—Almost free decorating ideas!

When we moved last year from WA to CA we determined it was more expensive to move all our things than it was to sell them and purchase new when we bought another house. To make a long story short, we sold almost everything and wound up using all the money we earned on our down payment for our new house. So I found myself with a 2500 sq ft house and no furniture and zero budget.

So here is an example of how you can decorate your home without spending a fortune.

This is our guest room- we had a bed with a cheap metal frame and that was it. Here is how I decorated the entire room for less than $15:

I had a Pottery Barn Parson chair that we used to have in our office. I sold the chair on Craigslist for $40 and used that to buy new things for the room.

New Bedding- Coverlet $20 on clearance at Home Goods, White Sheets $8 on clearance at Home Goods. We bought new pillows for our bedroom and our old pillows are in the guest room.

Paint- Purchased oops paint at Home Depot for $5/can. Color is a neutral tan that would match almost anything.

Side Tables- Purchased the white table at Target on clearance for $11. Painted an IKEA table we used to have in our entry way with the oops paint for the other side.

“Headboard”- I wanted to make a nice fabric headboard but it was too expensive. Instead I used an old mirror we had used in our old master bedroom closet. I painted the trim a crisp white. I used white paint the prior homeowner had left in our garage.

TV Stand- I made this hope chest in woodshop when I was 16 years old. It has been dragged around with me for years and I painted it the same white as the trim.
(We just loaned a TV to a family member that needed it- we are using a tiny TV that we have had for years in the interim).

Other: The lamp we had but I needed to get a new lamp shade- I finally found one for $6 at HomeGoods. The drapes we also had but I purchased the curtain rod on clearance at Kmart for $3. One either side of the closet doors there are candle holder/sconces. I cut a photo out of a magazine and had my husband make them with leftover MDF. I painted them white. The other accessories we already had.

My favorite of all is the gorgeous wingback chair. We looked for a new dining room table for about 6 months on Craigslist, yard sales, retail sales etc.. I finally found a mahogany table from a model home someone purchased. They didn’t need the table and it was brand new and in excellent condition. The table came with 6 chairs but the designer had also chosen two wingback chairs as Captain’s chairs for the table. We got lucky and scored the table for $350 and they gave us the wingback chairs free. The table is easily worth $1500 but the owner wanted it out quickly and had taken terrible photos of it. We had cash and they gave us a great price.

So there it is- I spent $53 total but sold something for $40 to offset the cost. Our total oop expense to decorate the whole room was $13.

Safeway store coupon

03/26/2009

Share

I thought I’d share a special Safeway coupon that can be used on a variety of items. These coupons are often found in stores that are just opening, reopening, or holding some sort of event. Every so often they have little tables in stores with free samples of products. The product is usually a Safeway product- such as their Vitamin Water- and the person will have these coupons as an incentive to get you to buy.

I recently found a table that the person had completely cleared and they had left an entire tearpad of these coupons. I took several as they often last through the end of the year. If you happen upon them at your store grab as many as possible. You can only use one per transaction but you will find countless items that are free or nearly free with these coupons. This week I am using mine to get the Safeway croutons that are part of the mix and match promo. The croutons will be free. I also have gotten cans of beans, produce, beverages and tons of other items for great prices by holding onto these coupons.

It is always worth while to pop into a store that has a grand reopening or opening sign as they usually have tons of sample booths, special store coupons, an ad featuring special pricing and so much more. These coupons are not specific to the store you find them in.
